to think that Brazilian waxes are NOT the norm. Or am I deluded?

Article in the Times basically saying that it is an expectation nowadays that women will have Brazillians.

women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/relationships/article6893826.ece

Is this the case nowadays? I have never had a wax job down below and have no intention of. Sod that!

Particularly at this quote: "There is something hugely irritating about being forced to conform to an aesthetic ideal instigated and perpetuated by the porn industry, but...it is now expected. If your boyfriend has been conditioned to expect a tidy Brazilian, he may genuinely find anything else very off-putting".

Really? Or in actually still having pubic hair am I the modern equivalent of the wild woman of Borneo?

Haha 'full bush' Oh dear

You got to get on that.

deaddei · 31/10/2009 19:09

My dh wouldn't dare ask me to have anything like that done...he is grateful for any sexual favour I throw his way.

BiteOfFun · 31/10/2009 19:10

Nah, soft fluffies are much nicer than ingrowing hairs and spotty stubble rash.

monkeyfacegrace · 31/10/2009 19:11

Ewwww to body hair anywhere, it freaks me out! I have hair on my head, and thats bloody it, I cant deal with women and body hair!

preciouslillywhite · 31/10/2009 19:13

rofl at the OP- "if your boyfriend has been conditioned to accept a tidy Brazilian, he may genuinely find anything else very off putting"-

cmon, have you ever met a bloke who'll get to the drawer removal stage and then go "urgh, no, hair! I couldn't possibly!!", then make his excuses and leave?

I don't think so, Mr/s (suspect not Ms)Times journo.

...the only thing that would put most of em off if they suddenly and unexpectedly find it Down There is a cock...and then suspect that quite a few would still just bravely grit their teef and struggle on with it. Bless em

BiteOfFun · 31/10/2009 19:14

Well, I find that odd- but each to their own. I don't think it's great to dictate the aesthetic for all women, it should be about personal preference, surely?

Ronaldinhio · 31/10/2009 19:17

I think it's basically a shit idea to have a hollywood or brazilian and would feel odd if my dh was dictating how I had my pubes "styled"

how much of what a man of today might expect in terms of pubes is driven by the porn industy?

weird how we never expect a 12" cock on a musclebound moustachioed pizza deliveryman who can go all night....and if we did I wonder how far men would go to give it to us (excuse the pun)

Also apart from all the 3000 other more worthy arguments brazilian's make your hips look a lot wider...think on!!

cornsilkwearscorsets · 31/10/2009 19:17

I am far too lazy to maintain a neat fanjo.

Flightattendant · 31/10/2009 19:18

I'd prefer to be the wild woman of Borneo than go through a wax. Having some groomed 17yo with tons of makeup on looking at my bits would just kill me.

I am interested to know the 'birthing norm' actually. It would make me feel better possibly...that mine was only trimmed at about 6 months when I could still see what I was doing.

I have in the past nicked one of my whilst using scissors and certainly wouldn't want to be risking that again by trying to do it in a mirror or whatever.

It didn't stop bleeding for AGES.

cornsilkwearscorsets · 31/10/2009 19:18

I'm sporting the Julia Roberts armpit look at the moment as well.

BiteOfFun · 31/10/2009 19:18

ROFL preciouslilywhite

ChasingSquirrels · 31/10/2009 19:19

I do nothing to mine. Never had any complaints.

BiteOfFun · 31/10/2009 19:19

And LOL at Ronaldinhio being the next poster- I think he found himself in that situation, didn't he? Or was that Ronaldo?

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 31/10/2009 19:20

Surely it's not all about men though?

Shaving's nice. It's soft and smooth, it's not itchy or musty. It doesn't catch wee germs.

It just seems more hygenic.

Plus we don't all get stubble rashes and ingrowing hairs. I use moisturiser and all is well.

But like I said, I'd prefer not to let it grow as I am ginger. But I genuinely don't like hair down there.

MuGGGhoulWump · 31/10/2009 19:21

Well, you know, I have always thought I liked my fanjo smooth because I do, because I like the way it feels to me, and I find it easier to orgasm. On my own, as I'm single.

Now MN has shown me the error of my ways, I'm clearly conditioned by porn, and subconsciously want to look like a little girl for the men I'm not with.

I will now have a hairy fanjo I dislike because that's the way it should be right?

How dare I do what I want with my own genitals.

Flightattendant · 31/10/2009 19:21

LOL PLW

Bless them indeed! It's that 'look' they get isn't it...

I've been hassled to do something to that area in the past but tbh it just made me annoyed. I do trim so it looks neat, when I can be bothered, but that isn't too often and I don't have relations with anyone since erm 3 years ago so no point really.

Prunerz · 31/10/2009 19:23

I find it a bit weird that women do this 'for the midwife'

Surely midwives didn't go into a 3 year training course thinking 'well I can cope with haemorrhoids, I can deal with labial tears, but jeez-o, pubes freak me out...'

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 31/10/2009 19:23

Haha laughing my socks off at MuGGGhoulWump. Great post.

IronCurtain · 31/10/2009 19:23

Ok, I don't normally post on MN (feel as if I'm a bit of a cheat - don't have kids, not TTC and not even a UK resident anymore - but this site is addictive) but decided to bite the bullet for this thread.

When I first moved to UK for uni I found it amazing that the girls I lived with were NOT waxing. I am Romanian and it is pretty much the norm here, not just among young people but even back during communism, during the worst times of the dictatorship, women normally waxed off body hair. It was deffo not the porn industry influence - no magazines, no video and no telly except for the state-controlled two hours every day.

When I grew up most of my colleagues would have their mums take them for their first wax (or even do it themselves), normally for legs, as it was considered much better than shaving.

I guess my point is that while in the UK it is only now becoming more common, no-one bats an eyelid that I get a Brazilian back in my country.

Flightattendant · 31/10/2009 19:26

Well you would think, wouldn't you Prunerz, but harking back to another thread a while ago, there was some nurse on here saying that all her colleagues discussed and laughed at women who came in unshaven.

I think it made a lot of us go

Flightattendant · 31/10/2009 19:27

Welcome to MN Ironcurtain!

Morloth · 31/10/2009 19:27

Mine are ginger, my hair is reddish but tends more towards blonde. As an Aussie though we don't have the same issues with red hair.

Since we are talking about our pubes here, anyone else's NOT curly? Mine are not as straight (or as long!) as my head hair, but not curly either. DH calls mine the "long and straights" rather than the short and curlies .

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that the reason we have hair is because it is more hygienic, can't back that up with studies though and am way too lazy to look it up.

Don't care what other people do with their body hair (unless of course it is something interesting ), but it does annoy me a little when people start talking about it being dirty or shameful to have it, when really it is the way it is supposed to me.

BiteOfFun · 31/10/2009 19:28

I'm not telling anyone what to do with their fanjos- but I don't expect other women to imply I'm dirty etc for leaving mine au naturale. So ner.

OmicronPersei8yourbrain · 31/10/2009 19:31

Sorry my porn-relatd musings weren't meant to offend, just something I'd found interesting. I'm a full-bush kinda girl, but then maybe that just reflects my general non-existant low maintenance approach to my personal appearance.

When I used to go swimming as a teenager at the local pool I don't remember ever seeing hairless fanjos in the changing rooms, but maybe times have changed and it's probably different now.

I sound like a hairy hermit. Actually, that might be quite a good summary.
