to think that Brazilian waxes are NOT the norm. Or am I deluded?

Article in the Times basically saying that it is an expectation nowadays that women will have Brazillians.

women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/relationships/article6893826.ece

Is this the case nowadays? I have never had a wax job down below and have no intention of. Sod that!

Particularly at this quote: "There is something hugely irritating about being forced to conform to an aesthetic ideal instigated and perpetuated by the porn industry, but...it is now expected. If your boyfriend has been conditioned to expect a tidy Brazilian, he may genuinely find anything else very off-putting".

Really? Or in actually still having pubic hair am I the modern equivalent of the wild woman of Borneo?

how can you be laughing your socks of at mugglewhump?
agreeing yes
but laughing???

I'm still honestly shocked at your worrying about you dp finding hair on your fanjo

I can understand that you exhibit choice to remove the hair for whatever reason (??? for wee germs??? ) but why would an adult woman be worried or embarassed to exhibit natural hair growth in front of another adult

Morloth · 31/10/2009 19:33

Also, can't imagine worrying about what the midwives are thinking. Just catch the baby, mkay!?

cornsilkwearscorsets · 31/10/2009 19:34

Do you think that our DP's would be able to pick us out of a fanjo line up? Far less likely with a kojak I should think. Hairy is much more individual.

MuGGGhoulWump · 31/10/2009 19:35

I do find it interesting that lots of 'eww no, it's pre-pubescent' types, will still remove hair from other areas, including the bikini line.

Surely if that's your opinion you'd leave all hair right?

I have the beginnings of a moustache. I wax it, but since according to this thread, I'm wanting to look like a 12 year old by getting rid of my pubes, I have to leave the 'tache too right?
My age means I'm getting hairier, and I shouldn't want to look younger than I am.

Funnily enough, the other hair removal is more likely to be for others, as others are more likely to see my legs, pits or top lip.
No one other than me sees my fanjo, yet that's the bit that's focused on when people are saying it's porn and to do with pleasing men.

How does that work?

BiteOfFun · 31/10/2009 19:38

Oh I don't know, cornsilk...there is the, er, labial issue for a start

cornsilkwearscorsets · 31/10/2009 19:39

Hmmm, didn't really think that one through!

MaggieOicheSamhain · 31/10/2009 19:42

men don't have to wax their bits do they??

when they have vasectomies, do they feel under pressure to have a pre-vasectomy wax??

BrokkenHarted · 31/10/2009 19:43

Answering the question 'do those that do it actually do it for themsleves' - I started doing mine when i started riding a unicycle because pubes would...erm... burn and give blisters....down there.... with the way you sit on the seat. Once i had shaved them off once i couldn't stand them being back.

It also made oral sex better because my DH wasn't irritated by the tickle and he got more access to me which was great

I am VERY hairy by nature so this way is better for me and us.

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 31/10/2009 19:45

Umm... because I don't like it. Simples.

Mugghoulwumps post was humourous.

God forbid I find it funny.

Prunerz · 31/10/2009 19:48

FA I remember that thread - that poster was a total cow iirc, and several other health professionals came on and said so!

And if they do laugh at pubes - gawd help them, really, the numpties.

Ronaldinhio · 31/10/2009 19:50

yeah, god forbid

Morloth · 31/10/2009 19:51

PMSL at line-ups and uni-cycles - perhaps both at the same time?. I do shave my pits once they get to a certain length because they seem to "catch" at everything. Is very annoying.

MuGGGhoulWump · 31/10/2009 19:51

Unicycle?
Wow!

Morloth I have straight pubes too, well I don't have any but you know what I mean.

hf128219 · 31/10/2009 19:53

Each to their own I say. However I used to live in Cyprus and had a lovely little spot on the beach I liked to go to.

I was lying there and I saw this woman come out of the sea topless - and wearing black bikini bottoms.

It wasn't until she got a lot closer to me that I realised they were not black bikini bottoms - but the most enormous bush I have ever seen in my life.

nooka · 31/10/2009 19:54

I hate shaving anywhere, and I hate the expectation that you have to. Personally I think it is the fashion/grooming industry that pushes it the most, and I object just as much to feeling that I have to shave my underarm hair. I don't understand where the conditioning has come from that there is anything wrong with body hair. It is there to keep hot areas cooler and there are no hygiene problems associated with it. The crabs issue would be like saying that people who don't shave their heads are in any way to blame for getting head lice.

I loathe the fact that my daughter will look at her beautiful body in a year or two and think there is something wrong with it that will require time, expense and possibly pain to "correct".

I shave my legs in the summer because I have white legs and black hair, and so I feel self conscious but I don't know why I feel the need to do this, I know perfectly well that they don't actually look any "nicer" hairless (still white!). I have trimmed my public hair a few times, and regretted it each time as it is very uncomfortable, and again looks no "nicer". Genitals aren't very beautiful hairy or not.

Morloth · 31/10/2009 19:56

You don't have to shave your legs (or anywhere nooka) come to the darkside.

BiteOfFun · 31/10/2009 19:56

Lol hf- see, save on swimwear

nooka · 31/10/2009 19:58

Maggie, guys do have to shave (or wax if they choose I guess) before vasectomies. The resultant itching is a common complaint. My dh looked very peculiar at the time. However as sex is a no no for a while afterwards it wasn't an issue either way. I've never thought that sex woudl be better with him if only he shaved down there (I can't think why it would be) and to be honest even if he did prefer it for me I'd say "tough".

GetOrfMoiLand · 31/10/2009 19:58

PMSL at unicycle.

nooka · 31/10/2009 20:00

Oh Morloth I am pretty much on the darkside already! I just wish there wasn't that feeling of being watched - by other women mostly. I really couldn't care less if I'm swimming with someone who has a few hairs here and there, there are plenty of much worse sights. In any case one advantage of getting older is that whole invisibility thing, and the fact that the rest of your body is going to pot anyway, so really who cares.

Morloth · 31/10/2009 20:06

Mine leg hairs are blonde, but thick (like a shaggy bear), lovely and warm in winter.

People don't actually notice I have found.

I beach and gym and have not had anyone notice and to be fair the only time I have ever noticed someone else's was when one of the fabulous (older!) women at my gym had her pubes shaved into a lightening bolt. Which was hysterical .

Morloth · 31/10/2009 20:07

My leg hairs (not sure why I suddenly came over all German there).

ReneRusso · 31/10/2009 20:10

Well by the looks of the answers so far, au naturel is more the norm than Brazilian. I wouldn't dream of having one. I shaved the lot off once (for fun) and it looked vile, all red and raw and spotty. DH not very keen either and likes a full bush thankfully.

BrokkenHarted · 31/10/2009 20:10

Hairy legs don't bother me. I only bother never occasionally if i am starting to get the same length hairs as my hubby. (yes i am THAT hairy) Armpits get done cos i sweat bad otherwise.

Oh dear i wouldn't like him to go bald down there. He has asked me if i wanted him to and i said 'no, i want you not to, not ever!'

It would look odd IMO. Having said that, it would mean they weren't flossing my teeth getting in the way when.... well you know
