Puff does it for me too - My family nickname was Puff, and my Dad told me that it was because I used to sing Puff the Magic Dragon all the time as a little girl. he died 4 years ago,and I just can't listen to it without missing him soooo much and blubbing like mad - the same reason I can't listen to Tubby the Tuba (!), and also find it really hard to read my DD and DS 'No Matter What' ('Love, like starlight, never dies')

Also When A Child is Born by Johnny Mathis - it is a lovely song, but the bit that sends me into uncontrollable sobs is the voiceover in the middle when he says 'A child that will turn tears to laughter, hate to love, everyone to everyone's neighbour, and Misery and Suffering will be words to be forgotten ...forever!

Also, 'Somewhere' from West Side Story, and lastly, Away in a Manger. Such a simple carol, but my Mum used to sing it to me when I was tiny, and it just reminds me of those happy childhood times - I had to sing it in a Carol Service last year, and just had to mime the words -I honestly can't get past the first line without breaking down!
Sob!

I knew it was a bad idea to read this thread this evening, sitting here crying thanks to you lot, well also thanks to the fact that I've had some wine and at the half way point of dh's 7 month deployment.

I think all the sobbing over "morningtown ride" is the seekers version - its soooo melancholy! Someone else has just mentioned "The Carnival Is Over" by them as well - had forgotten that one and it always made me blub too.

Its not so much the lyrics, its the sad, sad sound their songs made!

These days, in order to keep from dissolving in regular fits of tears, I have to stick to fuck off music and Angry White Female songs.

expatinscotland · 14/09/2009 00:03

excepting Kelis, who does Angry Black Female with 'Caught Out There'. I think I'll listen to that right now.

Mary from Peter Paul and Mary died today

Leaving on a jet plane always makes me cry, too.

This is what Peter Yarrow wrote at the end of the book we bought for PolkSaladBaby:

"Over the years, Puff the Magic Dragon has changed a lot fo me because of the thousands of stories people have told me and my singing partners after our Peter, Paul and Mary councerts. They've shared how the song mved them as children, how itmade them cry, and how they've sung it to their own children and grandchildren.

Puff has appeared to me both childlike and wise, a king but also a willing follower of just about any bright spirit that inspired him. Puff gives his whole heart and soul to one special friend, Jackie Paper. And though it is terribly painful when Jackie grows up and has to leave, Puff has given Jackie the strength and courage he needs to believe in himself when he goes back to the real world. One day, as you can see at the end of this book, a new and special friend come to Honalee to play with Puff In this way, Puff and Jackie's friendship continues through new children like you..."

My mum used to sing me a lovely song.

As I was slowly passing, the orphans home one day.
I stopped beside the playgrond, just to watch the children play.
Alone a boy was standing, and when I asked him why,
He turned with eyes that could not see, and he began to cry...
I'm nobodys child, I'm nobodys child,
noboby wants me, I'm nobodys child.
No mothers kisses and no daddies smiles,
I'm like a flower just growing wild....

I can't rememeber the rest of the words but I can't even sing it its that sad

bigfatbump · 17/09/2009 22:06

I'm booking myself some 'cathartic crying time' tomorrow night as dh is out and I will sit and read this thread again - just skimmed it biting the inside of my cheek furiously.

HigherThanAWombat · 18/09/2009 01:38

This makes me cry, mostly due to the melody which is from one of my favourite pieces of classical music.

'If I had words to make a day for you,
I'd sing a morning golden & true
I would make this day last for all time
then fill the night deep with moonshine'

motheringheights · 18/09/2009 07:54

So many tearjerkers.

Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin always has me in floods.

Dophus · 18/09/2009 07:58

Most X-mas carols (the slow tradintional ones).

Two little boys. Rolf bloody Harris

PolkSaladLucie · 18/09/2009 08:18

HigherThanAWombat - I love that song! Haven't heard that version before, thanks.

Just watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Forgot about 'Hushabye Mountain'. Sob.

Thought I would open this one up again. This morning I was listening to the ugly duckling. It made me cry when the other ducks kicked him out of town. However, he was accepted when he was a beautiful swan. What that demonstrates to me is that even in swan world they are a very lookist society
