In a strange way I've found this thread quite cheery...means it's not just me with me bladder too near me eye. Next time any friends or family take the piss out of my general indiscriminate weepage, I shall direct them to this maudlin thread

Ninks · 10/09/2009 22:54

When A Child Is Born, classic crying song.
That made me weep even as an unsentimental four-year old that one.

I was asked to play it for a school Christmas concert once but argued that it's too hard for little voices.

Children singing it! At Christmas! They'd have had to scrape me off the floor.

ohfuschia · 10/09/2009 22:55

pregnantpeppa - I change 'down will come baby' to 'I will catch baby' didn't know the other verses though

Thunderduck · 10/09/2009 22:56

My Name Is Luca.

My name is luca
I live on the second floor
I live upstairs from you
Yes i think you've seen me before
If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble, some kind of fight

Just don't ask me what it was (3x)

I think it's 'cause i'm clumsy
I try not to talk too loud
Maybe it's because i'm crazy
I try not to act too proud
They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why

You just don't argue anymore (3x)

Yes i think i'm okay
I walked into the door again
If you ask that's what i'll say
And it's not your business anyway
I guess i'd like to be alone
With nothing broken, nothing thrown

Just don't ask me how i am (3x)

My name is luca
I live on the second floor
I live upstairs from you
Yes i think you've seen me before
If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble, some kind of fight

Just don't ask me what it was(3x)

LovingtheSilverFox · 10/09/2009 22:59

Goodness, almost every song that makes me cry mentioned here. 2 little boys, Puff, the rainbow connection etc etc.

Could I put in a couple of suggestions?

Halfway up the stairs, sung by Robin of the Muppets.

Artificial Flowers by Bobby Darin

Oh my darling Clementine, which although jaunty, does have words which are sad.

Old Shep by Elvis

On a different note, I have asked for Positive thinking, and Following you around by Morcambe and Wise, to make people smile, and freak them out! Following you around do, do, do, do, do, do!

pranma · 10/09/2009 23:01

My dd had 'One more step along the road we'll go'at her wedding and that was my breaking point to see my youngest,my baby [31] singing 'from the old we'll travel to the new and I'll be travelling along with you'as she looked up at her husband in church-ladies it was so very sobmaking.

LovingtheSilverFox · 10/09/2009 23:01

At my funeral, those Morcambe and Wise songs.

Haven't just asked for them generally!

Now off to find tissues!

Ninks · 10/09/2009 23:05

They shine a little brighter, they feel a little more
They touch your life in ways no one has ever done before
They love a little stronger, they live to give their best
They make our lives so blest, so why do they go so soon?
The ones with souls so beautiful
I heard someone say--

There must be Borrowed Angels, here in this life
They come along, into this world, and make this world bright
But they can't stay forever
Cause they're heaven sent
And sometimes, heaven needs them back again

They reach a little deeper, they see what's in your soul
And even when they leave you know, you'll never let them go
The world's a little richer, just cause they came along
Their love goes on and on, so why do they go so soon?
The ones with souls so beautiful. I heard someone say--

There must be Borrowed Angels, here in this life
They come along, into this world, and make this world bright
They can't stay forever, cause they're heaven sent
And sometimes, heaven needs them back again

How else can you explain why they're here and not here to stay?
I believe there must be, must be

Borrowed Angels, here in this life
They come along, into this world, and make this world bright
But they can't stay forever, cause there heaven sent
And sometimes heaven needs them back again.
And sometimes heaven needs them back again.

Ninks · 10/09/2009 23:08

That's a song by the way, beautiful melody too if anyone is brave enough to Google and listen. I'm not

hottiebear · 10/09/2009 23:10

I made up a couple of extra verses for Puff because it was too sad..

But soon there came a new friend
Jackie Paper's little boy
They played with string and sealing wax
And all Puff's other toys

Throughout the generations
Puff always had a friend
Paper girls and Paper boys
until the very end.

Another one that gets me is Scarlet Ribbons...

I peeked in to say good-night
And there I heard my child in prayer
"And for me, some scarlet ribbons
Scarlet ribbons for my hair"

All our town was closed and shuttered
All the streets were dark and bare
In our town, no scarlet ribbons
Scarlet ribbons for her hair

Through the night my heart was aching
Just before the dawn was breaking

I peeked in and on her bed
In gay profusion lying there
Lovely ribbons, scarlet ribbons
Scarlet ribbons for her hair

If I live to be a hundred
I will never know from where
Came those lovely scarlet ribbons
Scarlet ribbons for her hair

Remotew · 10/09/2009 23:15

I don't really get why 'Puff the Magic Dragon' is so sentimental. I was a kid in the 60's and liked it because it sounded childlike but it was about drugs.

Agree with Abba 'Slipping through my fingers', has me in bits.

There was a Clarks shoe advert on a couple of years ago with the song 'On white horses' from a kids TV programme in the 60's. Sung by Jackie someone. Had to Utube it and that flipping song made me weep like I hadn't done for a long time, as I loved the TV series and I saw myself as a child again who never knew what crap challenges she would face as a grown up

Thunderduck · 10/09/2009 23:19

I'm embarrassed to admit to this one but Somewhere Out There from An American Tail.

Somewhere out there beneath the pale moonlight
Someone's thinking of me and loving me tonight

Somewhere out there someone's saying a prayer
That we'll find one another in that big somewhere out there

And even though I know how very far apart we are
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star

And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby
It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky

Somewhere out there if love can see us through
Then we'll be together somewhere out there
Out where dreams come true

And even though I know how very far apart we are
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star

And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby
It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky

Somewhere out there if love can see us through
Then we'll be together somewhere out there
Out where dreams come true

Thunderduck · 10/09/2009 23:24

And 'Where is Love?' from 'Oliver'.

Where is love?
Does it fall from skies above?
Is it underneath the willow tree
That I've been dreaming of?
Where is she?
Who I close my eyes to see?
Will I ever know the sweet "hello"
That's only meant for me?
Who can say where she may hide?
Must I travel far and wide?
'Til I am beside the someone who
I can mean something to ...
Where...?
Where is love?

Who can say where...she may hide?
Must I travel...far and wide?
'Til I am beside...the someone who
I can mean...something to...
Where?
Where is love?

Les Mis a little fall of rain gets me too.

Don't you fret, M'sieur Marius
I don't feel any pain
A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt me now
You're here, that's all I need to know
And you will keep me safe
And you will keep me close
And rain will make the flowers grow.

MARIUS
But you will live, 'Ponine - dear God above,
If I could heal your wounds with words of love.

EPONINE
Just hold me now, and let it be.
Shelter me, comfort me

MARIUS
You would live a hundred years
If I could show you how
I won't desert you now...

EPONINE
The rain can't hurt me now
This rain will wash away what's past
And you will keep me safe
And you will keep me close
I'll sleep in your embrace at last.

The rain that brings you here
Is Heaven-blessed!
The skies begin to clear
And I'm at rest
A breath away from where you are
I've come home from so far
So don't you fret, M'sieur Marius

I don't feel any pain
A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt me now

That's all I need to know
And you will keep me safe
And you will keep me close

MARIUS(in counterpoint)
Hush-a-bye, dear Eponine,
You won't feel any pain
A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt you now
I'm here

I will stay with you
Till you are sleeping

EPONINE
And rain...

MARIUS
And rain...

EPONINE
Will make the flowers...

MARIUS
Will make the flowers... grow...

(She dies. Marius kisses her, then lays her on the ground)

ENJOLRAS
She is the first to fall
The first of us to fall upon this barricade

MARIUS
Her name was Eponine
Her life was cold and dark, yet she was unafraid.

COMBEFERRE
We fight here in her name

PROUVAIRE
She will not die in vain.

LESGLES
She will not be betrayed.

(They carry her body off)

scaryhairycat · 10/09/2009 23:33

Slipping through my fingers gets me every time too! I hadn't heard it before watching Mamma Mia in the cinema, and I'm not one for crying in public at all but I just couldn't help myself!
I must confess I too deliberately go out of my way sometimes to listen to sad songs and have a good old blub!

(I am now a complete mess after reading this thread btw!)

Thunderduck · 10/09/2009 23:38

And Empty Chairs At Empty Tables also from Les Mis.

There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain goes on and on.
Empty chairs at empty tables
Now my friends are dead and gone.

Here they talked of revolution.
Here it was they lit the flame.
Here they sang about `tomorrow'
And tomorrow never came.

From the table in the corner
They could see a world reborn
And they rose with voices ringing
I can hear them now!
The very words that they had sung
Became their last communion
On the lonely barricade at dawn.

Oh my friends, my friends forgive me

(The ghosts of those who died on the barricade appear)

That I live and you are gone.
There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain goes on and on.

Phantom faces at the window.
Phantom shadows on the floor.
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more.

(The ghosts fade away)

Oh my friends, my friends, don't ask me
What your sacrifice was for
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will sing no more

LedodgyDailyMailstinksofpoo · 10/09/2009 23:42

Oh God yes Thunder and 'On my Own'

And now I'm all alone again, no where to go no one to turn to,
I did not want you money sir, I came out here cause I was told to,
And now the night is near,
And I can make believe he's here.

Sometimes I walk alone at night
When everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and then I'm happy
With the company I'm keeping
The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head.

On my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone, I walk with him till morning
Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me

In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me for ever and forever

And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone, the river's just a river
Without him the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life I've only been pretending
Without me his world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known!

I love him
I love him
I love him
But only on my own.

Thunderduck · 10/09/2009 23:48

And 'Bring Him Home'

God on high
Hear my prayer
In my need
You have always been there

He is young
He's afraid
Let him rest
Heaven blessed.
Bring him home
Bring him home
Bring him home.

He's like the son I might have known
If God had granted me a son.
The summers die
One by one
How soon they fly
On and on
And I am old
And will be gone.

Bring him peace
Bring him joy
He is young
He is only a boy

You can take
You can give
Let him be
Let him live
If I die, let me die
Let him live
Bring him home
Bring him home
Bring him home.

LedodgyDailyMailstinksofpoo · 10/09/2009 23:50

Thunderduck · 10/09/2009 23:52

I really want to see it too. I may go to London to do so.

It isn't a sad song but I really love the song 'Stars'.

LedodgyDailyMailstinksofpoo · 10/09/2009 23:58

they are all fab I want to go and see it now. Must dig out the cds tomorrow!

isittooearlyforgin · 10/09/2009 23:59

Op, if you try puff the magic dragon book it has a happyish ending that might appease your children, (although think it is trying to hard to be optimistic as Puff the magic dragon is essentially a sad ditty. (fingers crossed link comes out ok, have never done this before!!)

Thunderduck · 10/09/2009 23:59

I think I'll do the same,or watch the 10th anniversary dvd.

legspinner · 11/09/2009 03:16

ninks and angrypixie, thank you for reminding me of "Old and Wise" - I too had an ancient taped version 25 years ago (off the Eye in the Sky album) - have just been transported back into time without the aid of a tardis, or indeed tissues. Nooooo!
