This is why 'drop dead Fred' is such a great film!

PortBlacksandResident · 09/09/2009 22:36

Humphrey - that's lovely!

HecatesTwopenceworth · 09/09/2009 22:37

I used to quite like that, in an oh isn't it sad sort of way. Until someone sung it for me.

Well, a version of it. ruined it for me and now whenever I think of it, I can only remember the obscene lyrics!

TheLadyEvenstar · 09/09/2009 22:37

Two little boys gets me everytime!!!

Two little boys had two little toys
Each had a wooden horse
Gaily they played each summer's day
Warriors both of course
One little chap then had a mishap
Broke off his horse's head
Wept for his toy then cried with joy
As his young playmate said

Did you think I would leave you crying
When there's room on my horse for two
Climb up here Jack and don't be crying
I can go just as fast with two
When we grow up we'll both be soldiers
And our horses will not be toys
And I wonder if we'll remember
When we were two little boys

Long years had passed, war came so fast
Bravely they marched away
Cannon roared loud, and in the mad crowd
Wounded and dying lay
Up goes a shout, a horse dashes out
Out from the ranks so blue
Gallops away to where Joe lay
Then came a voice he knew

Did you think I would leave you dying
When there's room on my horse for two
Climb up here Joe, we'll soon be flying
I can go just as fast with two
Did you say Joe I'm all a-tremble
Perhaps it's the battle's noise
But I think it's that I remember
When we were two little boys

Do you think I would leave you dying
There's room on my horse for two
Climb up here Joe, we'll soon by flying
Back to the ranks so blue
Can you feel Joe I'm all a tremble
Perhaps it's the battle's noise
But I think it's that I remember
When we were two little boys

--------

And when ds1 was small (just after his father left) I used to sing this to him, everytime i hear it now i sob.
Only i changed it to his name.

You get blue like everyone
But me and Grandpa Joe
Can make your troubles go away
Blow away, there they go...

Cheer up, Charlie
Give me a smile
What happened to the smile I used to know
Don't you know your grin has always
Been my sunshine;
Let that sunshine show...

Come on, Charlie
No need to frown
Deep down you know tomorrow is your toy...

When the days get heavy
Never pitter patter
Up and at'em boy

Some day, sweet as a song
Charlie's lucky day will come along
Till that day
You've got to stay strong Charlie
Up on top is right where you belong

Look up, Charlie
You'll see a star
Just follow it and keep your dreams in view
Pretty soon the sky is going to clear up
Charlie,
Cheer up Charlie,do
Cheer up Charlie
Just be glad you're you.

hatesponge · 09/09/2009 22:37

no, 2 little boys is MUCH worse.

it's the 'there's room on my horse for two' bit that always sets me off bawling

LucyOnTheSchoolRunWithDiamonds · 09/09/2009 22:38

Humphrey that's beautiful!!! I am going to sing that to my children next time.

Shame on your family for taking the mick, it's lovely. And has cheered me up - thank you.

Humphrey that is classic!
How sweet.....

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 09/09/2009 22:39

Is your name stacey?

At school, whenever we sang this song, a blonde haired girl with a pale complexion used to burst into tears and get so upset she would have to leave assembly (in junior school, not secondary!). This went on for many years and I could never ever look at her in secondary school without being reminded of her being led away from assembly in tears and inconsolable. Bless.

I love singing it to DD, its a bit sad, but its lovely.

LucyOnTheSchoolRunWithDiamonds · 09/09/2009 22:40

Poor old Stacey.

But no, I am not she

Ninks · 09/09/2009 22:41

We sung it in infant school but for the music festival we did Jamaican songs despite there being absolutely no black or mixed-race children in the entire school. Or in any of the schools in the area. Great stuff though. I remember my Irish Granny asking me to sing the songs and then hearing her version:

"Sure I'm on me way, sad to say, won't be back for many a day wisha me heart is down me head is turning around sure I have to leave me little girl in Kingston town".

Oh and "Yellow Bird" sung high in banana tree to be sure. Wonderful

harleyd · 09/09/2009 22:42

omg

why did i click on this

i should know better by now

SomeGuy · 09/09/2009 22:42

Surely you've heard the playground version?

Puff the magic dragon,
Lived by himself,
He had no one to play with,
So he played with himself.

He got himself a girlfriend,
But that was not enough,
So he got himself a boyfriend,
And that's why they called him puff.

LucyOnTheSchoolRunWithDiamonds · 09/09/2009 22:43

AIBU ... to feel a tiny bit proud about starting a thread on the AIBU board that has got everyone feeling weepy and emotional, rather than outraged and ranty??

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 09/09/2009 22:44

Ninks we sang Bob Marley, lots of it, including 3 little birds. Not with the irish accent though!

And we sang The Beetles too.

Ponders · 09/09/2009 22:44

One of our bedtime songs was You Are My Sunshine & that's pretty bloody tragic too

The other night dear
As I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
When I awoke dear
I was mistaken
And I held my head & cried

(best stick to the first verse!)

TheLadyEvenstar · 09/09/2009 22:47

Ponders why oh why?????

My dad used to sing that to me when I was small.....

SomeGuy · 09/09/2009 22:47

Here are Peter, Paul & Mary singing the original version live:

Ponders · 09/09/2009 22:49

The first verse is lovely though

You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know dear how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

(well that last line's a bit meh)

The kids loved it though & would snap to sleep after about 3 lines (or maybe that was my singing )

SomeGuy · 09/09/2009 22:52

Here is the Puff the Magic Dragon cartoon:

part 1
part 2
part 3

It is about a mute child.

TheLadyEvenstar · 09/09/2009 22:52

Ponders I agree it is a lovely song and I sing it to DS2, just makes me bawl every time as I lost dad in 2003.

pranma · 09/09/2009 22:54

When I was a little girl my dad used to sing a song called 'The Little boy that Santa Claus Forgot'All he wanted was some soldiers and a drum but 'the poor little laddy,he didn't have a daddy'so he had to play with 'last year's broken toys'.I really cried when he sang it and he used to say that it would make me appreciate how lucky I was

TheLadyEvenstar · 09/09/2009 22:59

isn't it amazing how song lyrics can really make you feel so much?

One that does it for me and it is not a kids song is this...

I feel unhappy
I am so sad
I lost the best friend
That I've ever had

She is my baby
I love her so
But it's too late now
I've let her go

We're going through changes (ohh - [chorus])
We're going through changes (ahh - [chorus])

We've shared the years
We've shared each day
I love you daddy
But I found my way

You know the world
Is an evil place
My baby is grown now
She's found her way

(ohh ahh - [Chorus])
We're going through changes (ohh - [chorus])
We're going through changes (ohh - [chorus])
(ahh - [Chorus])

It took so long
To realize
I can still hear
His last goodbyes

Now all my days
I'm filled in fears
Wish I could go back
And change the years

We're going through changes
We're going through changes (changes - [Chorus])
We're going through... Changes

Changes
Changes
Changes...

it was released around the time Dad died.
