AIBU Books Game Part 4

MoominMymbleandMy · 17/07/2009 19:54

Well, we made it to a fourth thread!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to refuse to read aloud?

Be not afeared, Moomin - there's at least one scurvy varmint still a-sailin' the high seas with 'ee!

...Aye, and I had read of Miss Hackabout-Jones' exploits in a book of another name. She was a saucy wench, to be sure...

MoominMymbleandMy · 21/09/2009 16:00

AIBU to pretend I know shorthand?

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 21/09/2009 16:20

Ay, 'tis a rollicking tale, t'be sure!

Tea, anyone?

Moomin, sounds like the sort of thing one of Jilly Cooper's ditzy heroines would do, but more clues please!

AIBU to fancy the girl next door?

CJCregg · 21/09/2009 17:05

Moomin, you can pretend but it'll get you into trouble later when you're supposed to read a coded letter and everything goes horribly wrong because of your pretence (GOD I hated that book!)

Pogleswood · 21/09/2009 19:39

Evening all! Are we all normal again now?

So before heading off to fresh AIBUs and pastures new,who were you ,Treacle??

MoominMymbleandMy · 21/09/2009 21:19

As normal as we ever are!

Super, super fast, CJ! I thought the U-ness was more on the letter writer's side to trust someone else to be able to transcribe her shorthand. But the whole book was a bit far-fetched.

Treacle, it all depends, more detail, please.

AIBU to give away my daughter's toy?

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 21/09/2009 22:28

So it's back to the old cry of "More clues, please!"

Are you trying to teach your daughter not to be selfish,Moomin?

llandb · 21/09/2009 22:35

Um. Clues? Please?

steamedtreaclesponge · 22/09/2009 10:31

So what was yours, Moomin?

Pogle, my book was Fanny by Erica Jong.

...I just wish there was some way of getting to know her, spying on her family just isn't satisfactory, somehow...

MoominMymbleandMy · 22/09/2009 12:18

Greetings!

Mine was A High Wind in Jamaica by Richard Hughes. It's a bit like Lord of the Flies because the children are amoral and corruptible, quite daring for a novel from the 1920s.

Treacle, you wouldn't happen to be a handsome young chap living with your grandfather, would you?

...It will teach her to be unselfish but that wasn't the reason. I was trying to smooth over an awkward situation...

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 22/09/2009 12:28

Yep, that's me!

What was the shorthand one, Moomin? And are you a pioneer, by any chance?

steamedtreaclesponge · 22/09/2009 12:31

And... AIBU to stop my daughter seeing her friend?

MoominMymbleandMy · 22/09/2009 15:46

Oh dear, too much rum has obviously destroyed brain cells I couldn't afford to lose because you already knew about A High Wind in Jamaica, Treacle!

Sorry, the shorthand one was The House at Riverton by Kate Morton. I suspect she hasn't much experience of shorthand.

And yes, you are bang on the nose, I am a pioneer, albeit rather reluctantly. But at least being dragged from pillar to post is going to give DD2 plenty of writing material!

And guess what arrived today from the US? The copy of Attic Term you spotted for me. And it was an AF and it's a first edition!!!
Thank you so much!

So, DD and best friend, on the face of it you sound a bit U, but no doubt you have your reasons.

AIBU to meddle with the plot of a much-loved classic?

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 22/09/2009 16:27

Didn't Kate Morton write that pile of tripe The Forgotten Garden? Is The House at Riverton any better?

Hooray for abebooks! I'm glad it was the real thing, would have been if it turned out to be something completely different.

...Indeed I do have my reasons - this girl is a bad influence!

More clues please...
