AIBU Books Game Part 4

MoominMymbleandMy · 17/07/2009 19:54

Well, we made it to a fourth thread!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to refuse to read aloud?

OP posts:
CJCregg · 22/09/2009 16:31

treacle, is your daughter's friend a redhead?

CJCregg · 22/09/2009 16:36

PS I thought the House at Riverton was a pile of tripe ... bought it to take on holiday and found three copies already in the hotel, abandoned by equally disgusted readers.

Hurrah for the Attic Term, though!

AIBU to be having an identity crisis?

MoominMymbleandMy · 22/09/2009 20:16

Oh that redhead! Been sending your DD home tipsy has she, Treacle!

And I was all set for Attic Term to be by someone else because it seemed too much a piece of luck to be true, but it is a lovely clean hardback, just minus its dustwrapper, and I have been wallowing all afternoon. I'd forgotten about Patrick and the au-pair!

So, CJ, is the identity crisis anything to do with an experiment? Wouldn't it have been wiser, if less ethical, to use someone else?

...Most people are agreed that the tinkering has improved it...

OP posts:
pollywobbledoodle · 22/09/2009 21:51

moomin was it changed via Hades prose portal?

pollywobbledoodle · 22/09/2009 21:52

ps house at riverton is up there with labyrinthe as novels to be used as doorstops or kindling afai'm concerned...

CJCregg · 22/09/2009 23:03

No, Moomin, not an experiment. Just an error of judgement on my mother's part ...

(Patrick and the au pair! You've done it now ... I'm off to reread the Attic Term. All that Changear stuff, it all felt a bit awkward, AF trying to drag herself into the 70s and be hip and with-it. Still brilliant, though )

And I'm clearly going to have to read Jasper Fforde (googled, thanks Polly!) - hitherto undiscovered, what was I thinking??

pollywobbledoodle · 22/09/2009 23:35

cj did she neglect to tell your correct parentage until recently?

aibu to worry about getting problems with my chest?

CJCregg · 22/09/2009 23:41

No, Polly, I know who my parents are - and so do my brothers - it's just that we're not entirely sure who we are ...

MoominMymbleandMy · 23/09/2009 00:05

Ohh, CJ! You need to rush out and buy a copy of The Eyre Affair at once. You will love it - it's insane, and clever and steeped in bookish references.

You are, of course, quite right, Polly. I was being Tuesday Next again - but a different title!

And I loved my wallow with The Attic Term, not her best - what with the references to trendy gear, dope dealing and Patrick's fervent objections to Vatican II, but the characters are so alive.

I need to track down The Cricket Term now and then I'll have to rob a bank for the others.

And I'm back to stumped mode on your one, CJ, but I'm wondering if you might be consumptive, Polly.

Now, for a most appropriate AIBU:

AIBU to be so excited at finding a copy of this rare book?

OP posts:
pollywobbledoodle · 23/09/2009 00:11

no, not consumptive, as far as i know i have no actual problems with my chest....it would just ruin things if i did

pollywobbledoodle · 23/09/2009 00:14

cj...are you aliens?

moomin, no idea...help please

off to bed now...up at silly o'clock to take dd to footie

CJCregg · 23/09/2009 09:38

Have ordered the Eyre Affair from Amazon, should arrive today. I've actually joined Amazon Prime, because my book buying has increased so much since finding this thread!

We're not aliens. We're just a fairly normal, quite large family - that's part of the problem, really, we get confused about who is who ...

steamedtreaclesponge · 23/09/2009 10:38

Spot on, CJ - raspberry cordial indeed!

I've never read any Jasper Fforde either, must add it to my (rapidly growing) list of authors to try garnered from this thread...

Moomin, are you something of an angelic character?

More clues please, Polly and CJ!

AIBU to think my nephew is an idiot?

MoominMymbleandMy · 23/09/2009 13:47

Are you an antique Roman, Treacle?

I think all our book buying has increased and in my house we already negotiate our way through tottering piles - time for another cull!

...I'm just a poor student/researcher, not in the least bit angelic...

CJ, Polly, no ideas, I'm afraid.

OP posts:
pollywobbledoodle · 23/09/2009 13:58

am in the demolition business...

stumpoed on the others

steamedtreaclesponge · 23/09/2009 15:40

...no, not Roman. I just wish he were less incompetent...

More clues please!

MoominMymbleandMy · 23/09/2009 18:47

Oh, I'm stuck on everyone's! Clues, please!

...I can't believe I found it. It is incredibly rare and it will be so helpful with my PhD. I'm sure it's all nonsense that there's a curse on it...

Stuck as a bear of little brain!

So, AIBU to drill for oil?

pollywobbledoodle · 23/09/2009 21:59

moomin, are you Ariel Manto (and sitting on my to read pile!)

...am hoping to have a nice bacon sarnie when i finish work today...

steamedtreaclesponge · 23/09/2009 22:13

OK, no idea on anyone else's!

...We work at the same place, so I can't really get away from him...

MoominMymbleandMy · 24/09/2009 02:13

Aargh! Not even a glimmer of an idea on anyone's!

But how smart is that, Polly?! Absolutely spot on and you haven't even read it yet. If only you still had some chandeliers...

So, clues, lots of 'em, pretty please?

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 24/09/2009 10:38

So who is Ariel Manto?

...And he keeps asking me for advice, but it doesn't seem to make him any better at his work...

More clues please!

llandb · 24/09/2009 12:00

Mornin' (just), all!
Joining the plea for clues!

... Well, it would be so much better for the environment than the proposed hydroelectric scheme. But we're small fry and up against big money! (Ah, those were the days!)

pollywobbledoodle · 24/09/2009 13:46
