AIBU Books Game Part 4

MoominMymbleandMy · 17/07/2009 19:54

Well, we made it to a fourth thread!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to refuse to read aloud?

OP posts:
Poledra · 07/09/2009 13:18

But I haven't

MoominMymbleandMy · 07/09/2009 13:18

Never heard of the Marlows?! Oh, poor Treacle, of course, you said earlier you hadn't read any. They're the family in the Antonia Forest series.

If I'd known before, I'd have sent Autumn Term round the Fur Quits. Anyway, look here and feast.

Drat, I was sure you were Felix (not Whiskas!) and I can't think of anyone else yet.

CJ, I was being Miles and Flora's governess from The Turn of the Screw - hence the horrible pun about rachetting up the tension - sorry!

AIBU to think this woman has a most frightful cheek to expect me to employ her again?

OP posts:
MoominMymbleandMy · 07/09/2009 13:26

CJ, poor Ann! There's a very long gap between me reading the books from the library and getting some copies of my own - and I could remember every character except Ann, which says rather a lot about her.

Can't Nicola be Elizabeth and Rowan be Charlotte Lucas? After all, Rowan didn't really want to farm and Charlotte didn't really want to marry Mr Collins.

stickylittlefingers · 07/09/2009 13:44

Moomin - that story scared me silly (as any ghost story does).

AIBU to wish that people could see me?

steamedtreaclesponge · 07/09/2009 13:59

Are you a ghost, Sticky?

More clues, Moomin - what did she do?

stickylittlefingers · 07/09/2009 14:03

No - I don't feel dead anyway. But all trace of me has been wiped away, seemingly.

Is it about 1938 Moomin?

Pogleswood · 07/09/2009 15:33

Was thunder involved in your disappearance in any way,Sticky?

More clues, everyone, please (you're beginning to sound like a character in a Jilly Cooper novel too,Treacle,or Katie Fforde - I think it's the reference to labradors! I'm sure you're a respectable inhabitant of a classic really !)

steamedtreaclesponge · 07/09/2009 15:55

...Well, I'm single again now, but I still don't think I should act on my feelings. She doesn't want a man with a past like mine...

More clues, more clues!

stickylittlefingers · 07/09/2009 16:05

It's what you get for trying to help people! Maybe my girlfriend was right.

What's the daughter doing at the moment, treacle?

steamedtreaclesponge · 07/09/2009 16:11

Am really intrigued by yours, Sticky!

...She looks after her family, mostly - they're a bit chaotic and she seems to be the only responsible one...

CJCregg · 07/09/2009 16:16

Treacle, inspired by Pogle I suspect you were a showjumping champion who treated his horses as badly as his women, but have now taken an interest in television - and are still a shocking womaniser, but might be about to change your ways ...

CJCregg · 07/09/2009 16:19

Moomin, need clues please on your dodgy employee!

(I don't think Rowan could be Charlotte Lucas, she's got too much character and sense, but agree Nicola really ought to be Elizabeth.)

steamedtreaclesponge · 07/09/2009 16:49

Spot on, CJ! Obviously my rakish good looks were too difficult to keep hidden for long

AIBU to hate society?

Pogleswood · 07/09/2009 17:33

Oh no,Treacle - you aren't really a character in a Jilly Cooper novel, are you ?!
Should've taken that feeling a bit more seriously then!

And why do you hate society?

I can see Rowan with Darcy myself...actually,maybe not, on second thoughts I'm not sure if either Rowan or Nicola would put up with him.

MoominMymbleandMy · 07/09/2009 18:11

Gosh, haven't you been busy! So what was Treacle's horse one - equine books are pretty near closed books to me no matter what age they're aimed at. Though I imagine passion in the stables is probably more fun than cheating at a gymkhana!

Sticky, more clues please, and I love a good ghost story though not late at night. And mine's set around the 1920s and 30's but doesn't have any specific dates.

I think you're being a bit hard on Charlotte Lucas, CJ. As she said to Elizabeth she was quite old for an unmarried woman and plain, and the alternative to Mr Collins was remaining a spinster - and who'd want to be like poor Miss Bates?

I bet she ran her house like clockwork and managed Mr C and vile old Lady Catherine so cleverly they never even realised she was doing it.

...What did that woman do! She left me without a Word of Warning, that's what she did...

OP posts:
CJCregg · 07/09/2009 18:26

Yes, but Rowan has loads more dash than Charlotte Lucas, although I do feel a bit mean about her now, poor love. I know - Rowan is Elizabeth and Nicola can be Anne Elliott, married to her dashing sailor.

No further on anyone else's, I'm afraid. Clues, clues, clues ...

AIBU to fancy the new kitchen maid?

Pogleswood · 07/09/2009 19:18

Not Nicola as Anne Elliot, not just because she marries a sailor! how about Ann as Anne Elliot?

Moomin,in what capacity did you employ this woman? Was she a nanny?

More clues,CJ - you aren't really being U to fancy her, only if you intend to take advantage.

MoominMymbleandMy · 07/09/2009 19:56

No, not Ann for Anne Elliott! Ann can be Fanny Price (poor Ann, now that is mean of me).

And yes, Pogle, she did work as my nanny!

More help on the kitchenmaid please, CJ, I am right out of inspiration.

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 07/09/2009 20:22

So,does she have an umbrella with a parrot head? If so I do think that her leaving your employ because the wind had changed was a little U - but the children did love her!

stickylittlefingers · 07/09/2009 21:26

I'm finding I really do have to Mind the Gap now.

Is Pogle right? If so, you are going to unreasonably take her on again and again! But with 5 kids I would take all the help I could get

CJCregg · 07/09/2009 21:32

Sticky, are you in Neverwhere?

This new kitchen maid, I don't know - there's something about her at appeals to me. She seems to know so much, and be so sympathetic. But my brother is master of the house, it really wouldn't be suitable....

stickylittlefingers · 07/09/2009 21:39

yup!

Treacle - do you hate Society or society?

Do you think he's coming back?

Pogleswood · 07/09/2009 22:35

More clues on your kitchen maid ,please,CJ (sounds familiar, but I think I am confusing her with a housemaid..
Anyway, night all, stayed up much too late last night, must have some self control tonight!

MoominMymbleandMy · 07/09/2009 22:58

Yes, bang on the nose, Pogle! I do wish she wouldn't keep walking out without notice. I wouldn't employ her again but the house runs so smoothly when she's in charge.

Stumped on Treacle's and CJ's. Actually, sad to say, I didn't recognise Neverwhere and I only read it a few months ago - I blame the cat bit for traumatising me.

And to return to an old theme:

AIBU to run away?

Night, all!

OP posts:
MoominMymbleandMy · 08/09/2009 00:11

So much for getting to bed before midnight but I suddenly wondered if you are stripy and furry, Treacle?
