AIBU Books Game Part 4

MoominMymbleandMy · 17/07/2009 19:54

Well, we made it to a fourth thread!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to refuse to read aloud?

Treacle, have your children telegraphed their father to ask if they can camp on the island?

MoominMymbleandMy · 03/09/2009 13:48

Alas, Treacle, I've gave up looking for Antonia Forest on abebooks a long time ago because the prices are astronomical. I did hotfoot it back in search of the £8 copy of Attic Term but I think it must have been snapped up instantly because the cheapest listed was £29 before shipping from New Zealand!

So, would it be inaccurate to describe your DCs as duffers then?

...I can't believe it. Miss Smith and young Sam are planning to murder me. Surely, this is taking competition a bit too far...

steamedtreaclesponge · 03/09/2009 14:01

Moomin, try here. You'd have to pay shipping from the US though.

Nope, no Swallows round here!

...I'm just writing the chapter on my turbulent youth, but I can't help wondering why the house is full of plants...

steamedtreaclesponge · 03/09/2009 14:05

Oh, and Moomin, are you in a forest? Did a spot of googling and I think I have read yours, but it was so long ago I've forgotten most of it!

MoominMymbleandMy · 03/09/2009 14:21

Now, I really would have to hide my head in a bucket if I didn't get this one - you're Moominpappa and the strange events are all the result of the children mucking around with the Hobgoblin's hat!

OP posts:
MoominMymbleandMy · 03/09/2009 14:39

Treacle, thank you very, very much and how did you find it because it didn't show up on my search? I'm now keeping my fingers and toes crossed they still have it!

And yes, hooray, the shop is in an enchanted forest! I was about to abandon it as another Beekeeper.

AIBU to hope my cousin doesn't recover?

OP posts:
Poledra · 03/09/2009 15:18

So what was yours, Moomin? I feel like I should know it, but light is not dawning....

steamedtreaclesponge · 03/09/2009 15:25

No problem, Moomin! I found it by just doing a search for "Attic Term" - I didn't specify the author and neither does that listing (am hoping it's the same book though) which may be why it didn't show up when you looked for it?

So what's wrong with your cousin? It sounds like YABU to me!

MoominMymbleandMy · 03/09/2009 15:29

Hi Pol, all still well, I hope. It was The Tree That Sat Down by Beverley Nichols. It can be very saccharine but Miss Smith, the evil witch, is a wonderful creation. She rides on a vaccuum cleaner and when she loses control of her temper puffs of green smoke come out of her nostrils!

OP posts:
MoominMymbleandMy · 03/09/2009 15:33

Ah, that will be it, Treacle - I was wondering if it was some esoteric searching tip handed down by your father!

...He's lost his memory of the last 10 years...

OP posts:
CJCregg · 03/09/2009 23:45

Evening all! Moomin, much as I'd like to be I'm nothing to do with the Mitfords - more of a geeky teenager ...

I suspect you've been taking advantage of your cousin's amnesia, but that doesn't get me much further!

MoominMymbleandMy · 04/09/2009 10:00

Hmm, are you 13 and 3/4, CJ?

...I'm not taking advantage, I'm very fond of my cousin. But he's happy because he has no memory of all the sad things that happened in the last 10 years...

was reading the thread and a certain teenager who painted his bedroom black was the only one i would have guessed but moomin got there first!

moomin, was there a war/bomb that wiped out your families?

CJCregg · 04/09/2009 12:38

I'm not Adrian Mole! I like to think I'm a bit more sophisticated than that - I may live in the suburbs but I go to art galleries in London, you know ...

MoominMymbleandMy · 04/09/2009 21:49

Oh well, then I'm really stumped, CJ. Another clue, please!

Polly, no one's been bombed but there is a war on. That's one of my main reasons for not wanting my cousin to recover. They can't send him back to the front in this state...

OP posts:
stickylittlefingers · 04/09/2009 22:00

Hello - not done this before but...

Moomin, are you living with your cousin's wife (pale pretty creature?)

MoominMymbleandMy · 04/09/2009 23:14

Hi Sticky, as always, everyone's welcome and yes, I do live in their house and she is very pretty and fragile-looking!

OP posts:
notimetoshop · 04/09/2009 23:19

Is your cousin called Rachael?

notimetoshop · 04/09/2009 23:20

Oh no, your cousin's a man.

stickylittlefingers · 04/09/2009 23:21

Thank you, that's nice to hear

So I'm guessing that you're harbouring a secret affection for this cousin and are a bit shocked at the people he used to hang around with - I mean, their clothes! And so, well, common...

YABU. But of your time, I guess!

CJCregg · 04/09/2009 23:33

Well, I'm stumped!

Better get back to my French revision - I'm off to study in Paris soon. I'm really excited but I'm going to miss my best friend.

MoominMymbleandMy · 04/09/2009 23:48

Yes, indeed, Sticky, I actually think she's a very nice woman, but if you saw her hands - I think she does her own laundry!

CJ, I'm still in the realm of wild guesses. Are you off to Paris for a year to learn dressmaking?

AIBU to confide my cousin's secret to my good friend?

OP posts:
CJCregg · 05/09/2009 12:55

Moomin, what was yours, please?! And are cousins the new aunts?

I'm not studying dressmaking, good God, no! That's for girls. I'm a student, man, and I think Paris in 1968 is going to be pretty groovy ...

MoominMymbleandMy · 05/09/2009 14:42

Well, I suspect your hero, whoever he is, is in for an interesting time, CJ!

Mine was The Return of the Soldier by Rebecca West and cousins couldn't possibly be as bad as aunts!

...I didn't think IWBU but I am very disappointed in my friend because she has broken my confidence and my cousin is very angry with me...
