AIBU Books Game Part 4

MoominMymbleandMy · 17/07/2009 19:54

Well, we made it to a fourth thread!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to refuse to read aloud?

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 28/08/2009 16:19

No,but you are vaguely in the right area,I am middle eastern...or rather DH is ,we are,for myself African might be a better description..

MoominMymbleandMy · 28/08/2009 19:17

Oh dear, your one is still very well disguised as far as I'm concerned, Pogle! Please spell it out a bit more.

...And how did you know the nature of my medical problem? Have you been snooping in my confidential records?

OP posts:
CJCregg · 28/08/2009 19:57

Moomin, are you about to take up employment at Hogwart's?

Pogleswood · 28/08/2009 20:26

Aha! I second CJ's question (and heave huge sigh of relief - brain obviously still in there somewhere )

Not sure I can make mine more obvious without giving the game away so ... he will stamp his little foot,my Lord will cause the djinns to make the Palace and gardens disappear in a clap of thunder, and hopefully this will put the fear of god into my Lord's 999 other wives...

MoominMymbleandMy · 28/08/2009 21:55

Crikey, Pogle!

Are you married to Solomon? Because I can't think of anyone else with 1,000 wives!

And 10 points to the houses of your choice, Pogle and CJ! I was hoping to spin that out a bit longer but you pinned me down with your first question.

AIBU to think it's time my granny retired?

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 28/08/2009 22:20

Now I really thought someone would get this quickly!
I am Balkis,Head Queen of Suleiman bin Daoud - in The Butterfly that Stamped, from the Just So Stories! So,yes,Moomin!

It depends on how old your Granny is,and her line of work,I suppose - more clues!

MoominMymbleandMy · 29/08/2009 00:01

Ohh, Pogle, light dawns finally! Odd how some of them stick in your mind - The Cat That Walked By Itself and The Elephant's Child - in my case, and some seem to have vanished altogether.

Treacle, piano lesson clues, please!

...My Granny runs a shop. It's a very unusual shop catering for the local community. But my Granny's a very unusual person...

Night, all!

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 29/08/2009 20:05

I really must read the Just So Stories again, - I think the Elephant's Child is the only one that I remember!

...Piano lessons are only for wets and weeds anyway...

More clues for yours please Moomin!

MoominMymbleandMy · 30/08/2009 01:56

"Wets and weeds" sounds familiar, Treacle, but not familiar enough, alas.

...Now that another shop in direct competition with my Granny's shop has opened up I do wonder whether we can stay in business. Particularly since the proprietors don't seem very scrupulous...

Night, all!

OP posts:
MoominMymbleandMy · 30/08/2009 02:04

Of course! Any fule should kno your one, Treacle. But this one was a bit slow off the mark!

Night, again!

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 30/08/2009 12:49

yes it is i molesworth chiz chiz chiz

Still lost on yours though!

AIBU to think my boss drinks too much?

MoominMymbleandMy · 30/08/2009 14:04

That could cover a lot of ground, Treacle! What job are you in?

...We've always looked on our shop as a service and tried to do our best for the community. But this boy and his grandfather are just out to make money, and they don't care how they do it...

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 01/09/2009 10:33

...He's still brilliant at his job but all this lunchtime drinking must be affecting his health...

Still stuck on yours though I'm afraid Moomin!

MoominMymbleandMy · 01/09/2009 15:23

...Oh, they are scoundrels. They've been selling boxes of 'nichts' and rien' because they know the locals are so trusting...

Still feeling very dense on your one, Treacle. Is your boss a detective?

And while we're hijacking I'm looking forward to the new Fur Quit book and WIBU to steal the pen from a much touted author who wallows in over-hyped revolting cruelty!

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 01/09/2009 17:22

Oh, I don't know what yours is at all!

...Yes, he is a detective. He's brilliant but can be a right bugger to work with at times...

And no, you WNBU! Have posted again on that thread, will be interested to see what everyone else thinks.

MoominMymbleandMy · 01/09/2009 19:33

Hmm, wild stab in the dark time here! Is your boss a Yorkshire man with a Scottish surname, Treacle?

...Granny's decided to open a Beauty Parlour to fend off the competition. But everything's been going wrong since the beautiful lady visited. And did I really see green smoke coming out of her nostrils?

OP posts:
CJCregg · 01/09/2009 20:16

Treacle, I suspect you might be in Oxford, and your boss is fond of crosswords.

Please can you tell me what the other thread is

Got to go back to sewing name tapes now ...

MoominMymbleandMy · 01/09/2009 21:03

Eeek, I have some name tapes of my own to sew, CJ!

And I reckon you may have hit the spot with old Endeavour. He sounds a much closer candidate than the Fat Man.

The other thread is the Fur Quits Book Swap Club main thread and all the threads for individual books linked to it. I'm after Treacle on the swap list and we have just been rubbishing engaging in debate about a literary giant.

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 02/09/2009 10:46

Spot on, CJ!

Might have to indulge in some Googling to try and work out what yours is, Moomin.

AIBU to want to get on with my writing without being disturbed?

Poledra · 02/09/2009 11:06

Treacle, are your 3 sisters bothering you?

steamedtreaclesponge · 02/09/2009 11:43

...Not sisters, but the children have been quite lively recently! Not to mention all the strange things that have been going on in this house...

MoominMymbleandMy · 02/09/2009 19:45

Are you trying to earn a living by your pen because your DH is unjustly behind bars, Treacle?

And there's nothing wrong with a spot of Googling.

...I have no idea what happened but when the squirrel wanted me to dye her tail it went bald not blue! We've lost so many customers...

OP posts:
CJCregg · 02/09/2009 22:59

Moomin, I was thinking that! 'Buns for tea!'

Can't get any of the other ones ...

AIBU to laugh at the bourgeoisie?

MoominMymbleandMy · 02/09/2009 23:57

Evening, CJ, you sound a bit Mitford-ish but that's a wild guess!

I have finished all my name tags and was duly rewarded by getting pipped at the post for a copy of Attic Term on Ebay this morning. Grrr!

...Miss Smith seemed such a lovely young lady but now I find she's an evil old witch disguised by about 10 layers of make-up, a wig and a false nose...

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 03/09/2009 11:18

Good guesses but no, no railways round here!

...the children have now gone off fishing so at least it's a bit quieter round here...

Moomin, have you tried abebooks.co.uk? They're quite good for out of print books, although the cheapest copy of Attic Term I could find was about £8 which is not particularly cheap.
