Im sori I dnt actually speak like that but being a student and a normal 24yr old who admittitly is addicted to her Phone i do lapse and more often than not revert to forgetting to add a letter to make my words complete. I do not deem this as lazy nor ignorant and i dnt feel that my abbreviations are that different from using DS, DH and FIL on here. I have been told that to use such 'txt spk' or to not write my words completley i will be hated on mumsnet. So am i being unreasonable if i forget my stupid letters?? Think bloody not! Ps, am crap at spelling, does mean im thick though does it

I have to admit to finding text speak and other mangling of the English language hugely irritating, on account of being an old fart . So I wouldn't normally choose to read posts that are written in it. I guess it depends how much you want to be accepted and taken seriously?

I think it's just what is the norm on mumsnet, HailStorm. It's not thought of as 'lazy' or 'ignorant' and I don't know where you get the idea you will be 'hated' - who told you that?

Textspeak is harder to read in great big long posts - it's fine for short messages on a phone, but not lines and lines on a computer screen.

So if you want to join in and get along with people, it's probably best to fit in with the norms. If you don't want to, then that's fine, too. There are other forums which dont mind textspeak. It's a bit like going to a party and listening to the conversation and working out what is acceptable and what isn't, to the group.

No you're not thick. I've been told this on here because I admitted to dropping my h's! You will get this sometimes on here, don't let it bother you (or pick apart any criticisers posts for grammar etc).

She's one of my closest friends who's just signed up, I was giving her the lo-down of MN on msn, told her about the whole txt spk is a no-no thing, and she disagreed.

I did warn her, and told her that she'd get flamed.

I use txt spk myself, in text messages, and on msn, but because I know it's frowned upon here, I change accordingly.

Please don't flame her, again, she's not a troll, just offering her opinion.

No it doesn't necessarily make you thick but it gives the impression that you are.

It also can be very hard to read text speak and to be honest if I see a thread with lots of text speak in it I can't be bothered reading it.

I must admit I do sometimes use text speak when I'm texting but never on a forum or writing an email etc. You wouldn't do it in an exam or when writing a letter to someone so why do it on here

Just because she uses text speak in informal situations, doesn't mean she's incapable of getting a degree.

I've read her essays, which are very eloquent and articualate FWIW.

Not everybody understands text speak and so what is the point? Besides text speak came about due to a limited number of keys and space for messages, MN has neither of these limitations. I don't even use text speak on my phone, awful awful and stupid.

Ah yes, the old 'I'm on msn' chestnut. I love when that one is used. Adds a whole new dimension to the thread, dunnit

HailStorm, surely you write essays using a keyboard and would find it difficult to write text speak on a keyboard?????

You should here the way I talk when with friends, Tottenham talk all the way! But I can knock out an essay Einstein would be jealous of!

If you have a whole screens worth of space to use then there really is no need to abbreviate like there is need to sometimes in a text message where you have a limited number of characters to use.

Use text speak if you like, there is no 'rule' saying you can't...

But it hurts my poor little brain and as a result I tend to not read posts written in bastardised English that I don't understand.

littlelamb I was talking to her on msn - I met her through our open uni course, we dicovered we have a lot in common and get on well, and so now use msn to chat. we also text a lot.

Quite often when she asks me what I'm upto, I reply that I'm on MN.

So she decided to join, and I was telling her the do's and don't's via an msn converstation.

It's not the attitude of someone who wants to make friends, is it?

It's like someone telling me that their local pub has a dress code. So I shove the doors open with my shoulders, dressed in something scruffy, shouting 'I hear you lot don't like people who don't dress up!!!'

I don't hate people who use text . I use it a little when I..er.. text people.
But I can't be arsed to wade through messages in text speak as it is too hard and too dull
