Im sori I dnt actually speak like that but being a student and a normal 24yr old who admittitly is addicted to her Phone i do lapse and more often than not revert to forgetting to add a letter to make my words complete. I do not deem this as lazy nor ignorant and i dnt feel that my abbreviations are that different from using DS, DH and FIL on here. I have been told that to use such 'txt spk' or to not write my words completley i will be hated on mumsnet. So am i being unreasonable if i forget my stupid letters?? Think bloody not! Ps, am crap at spelling, does mean im thick though does it

OP posts:
FAQinglovely · 16/06/2009 21:45

ahhh but QS - I don't know the OP (apart from her postings on the OU forums.........where btw a thread has just started discussing how difficult on-line support groups can be to access for some people when text speak is used (.

However I have met CB at our tutorials (infact we both sat in the wrong tutorial room for about 20 minutes before realising it was the wrong tutor............) and let me tell you - she's a lot more clued up than some of the people doing the course (this based on threads on the OU forums)

QuintessentialShadow · 16/06/2009 21:48

Not surprised FAQ, she comes across sligthly differently than the other one. CB can spell.

cordonbleugh · 16/06/2009 21:52

aww thanks FAQ

Quint - I'm a first year open uni student doing the same course as the OP and FAQ, and believe me, I do not think that I know everything, in fact, I'm of the opinion that no matter how much knowledge I gain from doing my degree, I will never stop learning!

Even when my career is well under way and I become ( hopefully) a professional in my field, I still believe that I will be learning new things all the time.

Education and knowledge doesn't end when you graduate. In fact, you don't even need a degree to be knowledgable.

Just because I am friends with the OP and introduced her to this site, please don't take the same opinion of me as you have of her.

She was wrong to post the way she did, and I told her so.

MollieO · 16/06/2009 21:57

I think the OU have a lot to answer for. All their assignments have word limits. Having finished my first OU course the hardest thing was sticking to the word limit. I didn't think of using text speak.

QuintessentialShadow · 16/06/2009 22:00

Lol Mollie. When I was doing my first degree There were two mature students from OU takign part in some of the classes. Can OU students still audit classes at "brick and mortar" universities if they find one that do a similar curriculum?

cordonbleugh · 16/06/2009 22:03

yes FAQ, very good point you make, and to be honest, one I hadn't even considered!

Will be interested to see the replies it gets!

I don't have any knowledge of screen readers and the like, so don't have anything useful to contribute unfortunately.

cordonbleugh · 16/06/2009 22:08

Aaaaaahhhh now I get you. Yes it would be like when you send a text to a landline and the person repeating it back is all kind off stilted and broken up and you have no idea what the message actually says?!

cordonbleugh · 16/06/2009 22:09

of not off grr again

FAQinglovely · 16/06/2009 22:13

yes except that some "words" in text speak, especially those using numbers would be read totally different, they're made to read words not random combinations of words.

I think there's a few MNers around that use screen readers to access they'd be able to explain better (so long as the question is put to them in "English" )

cordonbleugh · 16/06/2009 22:24

I think I know which kind of words you mean, but am hesitant to type them for fear of repercussions! lol

It's a good job I'm a good girl and play by the rules

MollieO · 17/06/2009 00:22

QS sorry, I don't know. Most brick unis wouldn't run courses at the times I usually study .

Mumofagun · 17/06/2009 00:31

Oh, don't want to appear old or oldfashioned BUT please can we communicate in our own language. Typing on Mumsnet is not "TEXT", nor is it cool to lose sight of the way we should be communicating. Is it any wonder (groans with age), that as a society, we don't ALL know how to talk to each other? "Text" speak, at the moment is exclusionary, i,e, for younger generations maybe and some older wannabe's and the exclusion of the mobile phone. The English language is for everybody. How does someone who's first language is not english cope with trying to read "text speak" on here? I need to go and get down with the kids!

juneybean · 17/06/2009 10:19

FAQ everyone on my course hated the OU forums so much that we elected to share ideas via a Facebook group lol

FAQinglovely · 17/06/2009 10:37

well we have a Facebook group as well. But I as I'm still getting to grips with writing essays I still pop onto the forums for some statutory posting to gain a couple of extra marks LOL.

Mind you I did find an improvement when I accessed via Firstclass rather than the website - although the moderation is still awful

MollieO · 17/06/2009 19:01

I haven't found Firstclass yet - how do you access it?

cordonbleugh · 17/06/2009 20:24

MollieO you can find it by typing firstclass into a search engine, and then choose which version to download according to what kind of programme your computer runs on.

There is a general version for windows XP etc, but if you use windows vista, you will need a different version.

I'll do a link in a sec for you!

Also, have you got an online applications disc? I think the OU send these out with every course mailing.

If so, it'll be on there - but again, if you operate vista you'll need the different version.

cordonbleugh · 17/06/2009 20:26

first class

You will find it soooo much better than accessing the forums via the web browser - much more colourful, less dull, easier to navigate etc.

Enjoy!

FAQinglovely · 17/06/2009 22:01

(but the general moderation is still rubbish .

cordonbleugh · 17/06/2009 22:21

care to share an example FAQ?!

I've just shared tma3 in study support

Do you know how to see who's read a post? I only figured it out a few weeks ago

Comes in very handy in blue cube though - when a certain person reads every single post, yet doesn't reply for weeks, claiming lack of access to a computer

FAQinglovely · 17/06/2009 22:30

nah nothing recent that I can recall off hand.

No I didn't realise you could do that........but just logged on and discovered how......going to go and have a nosey at a certain someone else who is claiming what you've just claimed (and I see you've been reading my posts )

cordonbleugh · 17/06/2009 22:34

It's great isn't it?! I sent a private message to a certain lady, along the lines of "I can see you've been reading all my messsages in the forum, just wondering if there was any reason you haven't yet replied and contributed?"

Bet that freaked her out. She probably thinks I'm a spy or something.

I can't work out why she won't accept my friend request on FB though

FAQinglovely · 17/06/2009 22:35

oooo I've just read your TMA3 - bet you did well with that - I've put mine up in there as well..........(same option as you - not half as good and essay LOL)

cordonbleugh · 17/06/2009 22:42

I did good on the essay part........ but forgot to send the version that was on the template......which meant part b and self-reflective notes didn't get marked

I'll have a nose at yours now, sure it's not that bad

FAQinglovely · 17/06/2009 22:43

oh I didn't do part B at all, did do the reflective notes, but had hardly posted on the forums.

Go awnn, what did you get for TMA3 then????

I'll tell if you do

(and yes we've bored them all off LOL)

Hope GR doesn't take as long to mark 4 as she did 3..........
