Im sori I dnt actually speak like that but being a student and a normal 24yr old who admittitly is addicted to her Phone i do lapse and more often than not revert to forgetting to add a letter to make my words complete. I do not deem this as lazy nor ignorant and i dnt feel that my abbreviations are that different from using DS, DH and FIL on here. I have been told that to use such 'txt spk' or to not write my words completley i will be hated on mumsnet. So am i being unreasonable if i forget my stupid letters?? Think bloody not! Ps, am crap at spelling, does mean im thick though does it

"narrowly misses being crushed by another falling standard in our education system"

BOF, what exactly do you mean by this?

noddyholder · 16/06/2009 16:49

You are new.You know mn hates text speak. You still use it.Think about it innit?

tiktok · 16/06/2009 16:49

HailStorm, you are not judged for your use of textspeak, FFS. Or your spelling or grammar.

You are being judged for your manners and inappropriate insistence that text speak should be acceptable.

You cannot possibly draw the conclusion that people instantly labelled you as 'thick' because you demanded to use textspeak. People instantly labelled you as a bad mannered twat, instead

Your question may well have been 'will I be judged?' but if you don't ask the question, how can people recognise it?

you · 16/06/2009 16:49

Umm, no.

You did not ask, 'will I be judged' you asked 'AIBU'? Within AIBU.

And now this is all a social experiment that we failed?

ThePhantomPlopper · 16/06/2009 16:49

Your dyslexia has nothing to do with this thread.

We were judging discussing your text speak.

PhaseAte · 16/06/2009 16:49

I wnat a MM emoticon too

a snooty one

notwavingjustironing · 16/06/2009 16:50

Is this the "science" bit?

MachuPicchu · 16/06/2009 16:50

@ Posie

Finished a degree two years ago and was told that essays marked over 80% are almost publishable (sadly I clearly never produced anything worth reading ). So very impressed if so...

claricebeansmum · 16/06/2009 16:50

But the spelling when you are not texting is awful too. Come on!

ThingOne · 16/06/2009 16:51

I'm 42. I'll happily admit to not understanding text speak. I don't even use it on text messages. When you were limited to 160 characters it might have had a place. Why would you use it when you aren't limited?

littlelamb · 16/06/2009 16:51

Ooo yes
A looking down the nose emoticon. Like but with a different eyebrow

cordonbleugh · 16/06/2009 16:52

"Finished a degree two years ago and was told that essays marked over 80% are almost publishable "

What would you say to the lady on our course that got 100% for one of her essays then?!

BitOfFun · 16/06/2009 16:52

I meant that I find it a bit, erm, irksome that you can get As or firsts or whatever you want to equate them to without being able to write, and that studying "stereotypes" passes for degree-level education. But I won't labour the point, for fear of crawling up Lucia's arse and missing the rest of the sunshine...just an observation, you can agree or disagree.

LoveBeingAMummy · 16/06/2009 16:53

And thats told us!

So might not have been a troll but people were right about the message not being quite as it was suggested. Thanks cordonbleugh for introducing her to us.

tiktok · 16/06/2009 16:53

"When you were limited to 160 characters it might have had a place. Why would you use it when you aren't limited? " asks ThingOne.

Here are some reasons:

  • when you want to troll
  • when you want to draw attention to yourself
  • when you're not really all that bothered about making other people feel comfortable
littlelamb · 16/06/2009 16:54

I want to be part of a degree programme that hands out full marks. Where do I sign up?

HailStorm · 16/06/2009 16:54

tiktok to ask the question would not give me the answers i was looking for. and you it isnt a social experiment, im not here with pen and paper but its good to gage people reactions. It helps with the study to look at people and the way they are.
The fact is i picked something i knew would get a response.
As for manners - correct the way i wrote wasn't intended to be polite.
But regardless None of you know me yet all felt it was ok to judge me.....mmmmmm

100% for an essay at university?

BitOfFun · 16/06/2009 16:55

I would say that it is a mickey mouse course tbh, if someone can get 100%. It doesn't happen at Oxford, and I imagine they have a few clever sorts there. Ho hum.

I've been goaded into being rather rude now, so I shall leave the thread.

Fimbo · 16/06/2009 16:56

From HS last post we have clearly been an "experiment". So where do you fit in to all of this CB?

ThePhantomPlopper · 16/06/2009 16:56

So why did you chose this website for this particular social experiment and not Netmums, Bounty, Baby World etc?

tiktok · 16/06/2009 16:58

HailStrorm, so in real life you are a well-mannered, non-twattish person who doesn't shoulder-charge her way into conversations and introduce herself in a defensive way?

That's good news.

But given all we had to go on was your first doltish post, how long were we supposed to wait until your real, polite, witty and communicative self shined through?

you · 16/06/2009 16:59

Do you go to McDonalds university?

cordonbleugh · 16/06/2009 16:59

FWIW lovebeingamummy, I don't think she'll be coming back!!

BOF I see where you're coming from, but have to ask, have you ever studied an OU course?

We actually have just been studying a unit on stereotypes, within the context of health and social care. The course is K101, an introduction to health and social care.

Many different topics are covered. The study of stereotypes that Hail mentioned does not comprise the whole degree.

I also agree that Hail hasn't presented herself in the best light in terms of her writing/typing, but that does not mean that she is incapable of writing an essay worthy of high marks.

Like I said before, none of you have read any of her essays, and so can only judge on what you see here in this thread, rather than the actual material she is capable of producing.

differentID · 16/06/2009 16:59

We are therefore a study? Isn't it usually considered good form to ask someone's permission before using them in such a way? There is also a media/ non-member requests section for such requests, for future information you understand.
