AIBU to want my 2 yo daughter to look pretty?!

My brother is getting married this year and I found the 'perfect' dress for my 2 yo to wear. But now I've been told she is NOT allowed to wear it because it's prettier than the dress they've bought their daughter (who is a bridesmaid). The dress they have bought for her is quite basic so I might as well dress DD in a sack!

AIBU??

I think it will probably be okay; it will compliment the bridesmaids' dresses without looking like your dd is one, which your SIL should be happy with.

"I'm afraid I think that is ttoo much like a bridesmaid's dress and there is a very real chance that other's at the wedding would think your DD is the bridesmaid instead of their daughter ... "
who cares?? do people really CARE about such things, as people thinking a 2 year old child is a bridesmaid when she isn't???
will the SKY fall in or something?
my god, how petty. the bride and groom need to grow up.
dress her how you like imo.

bubblagirl · 13/01/2009 17:06

could you compromise wear something sweet and basic for wedding and dress up for evening

hullygully · 13/01/2009 17:08

There's no way I'd go to the wedding after that sort of behaviour.

stillstanding · 13/01/2009 17:08

Of course the sky won't fall in and the world will keep turning but people's feelings do matter (especially on their wedding day) and I think that most people try not to upstage the wedding party.

The flowergirl is probably really, really excited about being the centre of attention when her parents get married and would feel hurt if everyone thought her cousin was the main deal.

Just basic courtesy, not a crisis.

hullygully · 13/01/2009 17:11

Unless you go all in black and hurl curses and frogs from the back.

belgo · 13/01/2009 17:13

Why should there be a dress code for children? Why can't the children wear silver and lilac to the wedding, or speghetti straps, or whatever?

harpsichordcarrier · 13/01/2009 17:13

oh come on
putting a two year old in a pretty frock is not upstaging the wedding party.
she won't be a bridesmaid because she won't be a bridesmaid, she won't walk down the aisle, hold flowers etc.

if people's feelings matter, which of course they do, then what about the OP's feelings.
the sister of the bride is part of the wedding party, surely? or do her feelings not matter?

I mean, what unplesant behaviour to seek to dictate to someone else what their child shoudl wear in case that child looks prettier.

utter rudeness and insensitivity.

of course the OP won't put her dd in the dress but is she being unreasonable to be upset at vile rudeness and control freakery?
no, not imo

Simplysally · 13/01/2009 17:14

My dd wore a dress similar to that to my cousin's wedding (a bit fancy for a 2-yr but that's just my opinion) but it didn't cross my mind that anyone would mistake her for a bridesmaid . It was a party dress (from Woolworths!) but my cousin's wife had her sisters as bridesmaids, all in burgundy. So it didn't matter.

It's up to you what you do really but I would't have shown anyone the dress beforehand.

It does sound a bit storm in a teacup but I can understand the bride-to-be feeling miffed. Maybe she can't afford such a nice dress?

TBH I do think the dress you've linked to would upstage a bride, let alone a bridesmaid!

Your Monsoon dress is very pretty without involving netting and sparkles, which are probably the bits on the dress they are objecting to.

Or you could try Zara which is cheaper than Monsoon and does some gorgeous little girls stuff?

one from M&S similar shape to your original but without sparkles etc

Simplysally · 13/01/2009 17:19

FWIW, my dd was 7 when she wore the dress. Not 2.

harpsichordcarrier · 13/01/2009 17:23

lololol at objetcing to netting and sparkles for a 2 year old girl.
the world is gone mad.
herlifeherkids. honestly, if only I had known that getting married gave me carte blanche to turn into a total spoiltbrat and start imposing my taste on other people.
what a missed opportunity

Podrick · 13/01/2009 17:27

Are you planning on wearing a brides style dress yourself by any chance?

Keep the dress for parties and get a gprgeous dress that isn't a bridesmaid dress!

Simplysally · 13/01/2009 17:27

What comes around goes around.

The SIL to be will probably be snubbed or dissed like this by someone else further down the line and wonder why.

Must admit I'd probably dress her in my choice on the dya and to hell with it. What can they do in reality? Ask her to get changed?

yabu
her wedding, her choice

mylifemykids · 13/01/2009 17:32

LOL at 'her wedding, her choice'! Maybe all 150 guests should get their chosen outfit approved by the bride before the actual day

2pt4kids · 13/01/2009 17:32

That dress is a horror. No wonder they dont want your DD wearing it. It looks like a bridesmaid dress so they probably dont want people thinking they chose it!!!

Look on Monsoon's website. They ahve some beautiful but not so OTT dresses for little girls.

DrNortherner · 13/01/2009 17:35

YABU, it is a bridesmaid dress. I would be miffed off if I were the bride.

Ronaldinhio · 13/01/2009 17:41

maybe given some people's choices....

J2O · 13/01/2009 17:43

aw i lke the dress, let her wear it with a pretty cardigan. I don't think yabu, db and sil didn't buy lo a bridesmaid dress as they thought she was too young but dd1 had one so i got lo something similar, nobody was bothered that she looked like a bridesmaid even though she technically wasn't one!
