AIBU to want my 2 yo daughter to look pretty?!

My brother is getting married this year and I found the 'perfect' dress for my 2 yo to wear. But now I've been told she is NOT allowed to wear it because it's prettier than the dress they've bought their daughter (who is a bridesmaid). The dress they have bought for her is quite basic so I might as well dress DD in a sack!

AIBU??

she s two!!
oh she should have real sleeves or thiock straps
and yes, it is way too bridesmaidy

cmotdibbler · 13/01/2009 16:20

YABU - that says bridesmaids dress all over it, and it's not unreasonable for them to ask that you not dress your daughter like their bridesmaid(s).

sitdownpleasegeorge · 13/01/2009 16:21

Mrs Groucho
I think offering to buy a replacement dress for the one your future SIL and her daughter have already chosen is very rude and tactless. It says "in my opinion you have made a poor choice and you need my help to sort this out"

I don't think it will cement the friendship bond between you and you SIL very well at all.

mylifemy kids obviously likes pink frilly and embellished dresses but she should not assume these are to every one's taste.

sometimes less is more

this is lovely

Spaghetti straps. I find them a bit creepy on a little girl. Just not appropriate. Like a little girl in a bra top. Ok for 12 and above though.

mm22bys · 13/01/2009 16:22

Agree, it's too bridesmaidsey, and I don't like the spaghetti straps either.

There are plenty of lovely dresses for little girls out there, so you don't need to go down the bridesmaid route when she's not one!

Also your 2 yo daughter will always look pretty so agree that your title is U too!

stillstanding · 13/01/2009 16:22

I must admit I don't see spaghetti straps like this at all but am on your page with bra tops ... yuck

bronze · 13/01/2009 16:23

have to say Ive changed my mind about just wering it now Ive seen it. Its very bridesmaidy. There are things just as lovely but not so obviously a bridesmaids dress you could wear

mylifemykids · 13/01/2009 16:23

Actually my DD is an ugly little thing so I needed a pretty dress to distract from her face

OK, is any dress with the net underneath out or is just the layers and the way OTTness of it?!

Liffey - would you think the same about this?

LiffeyMermaid · 13/01/2009 16:24

This! she HAS to wear this!!!! upstage the BRIDE!

bananapaddlepop · 13/01/2009 16:25

monsoon, monsoon, monsoon

MrsGrouchoMarxMerryHenry · 13/01/2009 16:25

ALRIGHT ALREADY, sitdownpleasegeorge! I can't always be perfect !

mylifemykids · 13/01/2009 16:25

idobelieveinfairies · 13/01/2009 16:26

God i love an excuse to shop at monsoon!!!!!

LiffeyMermaid · 13/01/2009 16:26

Yeah put the dog in that first dress, a veil, a ribbon, you know!

Jenbot · 13/01/2009 16:26

It is a bit too bridesmaidy IMHO.

belgo · 13/01/2009 16:27

I don't see the problem with speghetti straps.

I don't blame you for taking the opportunately to dress your dd is in a very pretty, girly dress. I think the bride and groom are being a bit over sensitive to tell you your dd isn't allowed to wear it.

I've think it's lovely you're making the effort to dress your dd up to celebrate their wedding day.

mistressmabel · 13/01/2009 16:27

Until I saw the dress I would have said YANBU and that you can dress DD how you want!
BUT having seen the link YABU - that dress is clearly a bridesmaid dress and you daughter is not a bridesmaid (or have I missed something?) Did you want her to be? You clearly seem to want to upstage them, it is their day - ebay the dress and get a normal dress.

belgo · 13/01/2009 16:27

so YANBU imo

mylifemykids · 13/01/2009 16:27

I'm loving your style Liffey. Would it be too much to give DD (or the dog) a basket full of flower petals to scatter as we approach the church?

chancelloroftheexCHEQUERS · 13/01/2009 16:29

It's a vile dress. It looks like something an american child would wear in one of those hideous pageants.

Also agree re: spaghetti straps. It's tarty.

mylifemykids · 13/01/2009 16:29

mistressmabel it is not CLEARLY a bridesmaid dress as it is also marketed as a 'party' dress. I think I just got overexcited about dressing DD up for a wedding and admit it possibly is OTT

OP posts:
LiffeyMermaid · 13/01/2009 16:30

I think you shoule train the dog to catch the bride's bouquet. I hope the dog is seated at the main table!

cornflakegirl · 13/01/2009 16:31

I don't actually think it shouts bridesmaid. I think it's a lovely princessy dress. What's the point of having girls if you can't put them in OTT party dresses? (I have a boy. I am jealous.)

But obviously agree that it's really not worth falling out over.

LiffeyMermaid · 13/01/2009 16:33

Nappy, that's halter neck, slightly different. But again, designed originally with a women's figure in mind. Breasts, showing off shoulders, It's not a big deal, I don't want you to think I dress my dd like somebody from the Amish community in Pennsylvania, but just, I wouldn't choose that style for my own dd. That's all.
