am posting this timidly in case it is misinterpred...

there is a choice of two catholic schools locally, one is three quaters black african, and the other is three quaters white british.

now i said to dh that id prefer the white majority school, as i feel my white children would fit in better, and i would with the other parents. i dont mean it in a way that i think white ppl are better, or anything like that, in fact the other school has higher exam results. just that i am concerned with sending my child to a school that they will be very much a minority.

but DH said that he should go to the better results school.

now im torn, because im very aware that kids pick up on a child being different, and i was bullied horrendously in school.

please dont read this as a black/white thing, i would feel the same about him going to a non-religous school for the same reasons.

ok i will stand back and wait for the back lash now

sorry but how is it possible to not "read this as a black/white thing"??

ManIFeelLikeAWoman · 13/12/2008 20:05

Not unreasonable.

Just racist.

StephanieByng · 13/12/2008 20:05

If you look at it the way you are you ARE at risk of making it a black/white thing.

the only thing to do to choose in a genuinely non-discriminatory way is to visit both schools, and decide from first hand observation of the atmosphere and the ethos, which school would make your child happier. A happy child who feels comfortable is more likely to get better results. It doesn't matter which school has the better general results IMO.

thenewme · 13/12/2008 20:05

This is going to go badly wrong.

I agree with your Dh. As a parent you should want your kids to go to the best school.

NattyTurkeyAndEggnog · 13/12/2008 20:05

ok maybe it is a black white thing lol .. i meant in a racist way, both my DC have diff race friends i dont have a colour issue, just a fitting in issue.

how on earth can this be interpreted other than you don't want your kids mixing with black kids as you think they are bullies?

Mamazontopofsanta · 13/12/2008 20:06

so the "black" school is seemingly more academicly proficiant and yet you would still rather your child attended the "white" school?

and yet you think this has nothing to do with race?

WalkingInAWonderStuffingLand · 13/12/2008 20:06

I dont' think that making a choice based on results or ethnic make-up is wise. I would visit both and see which one you and your dc prefer the look and feel of tbh

I think it unlikely that your child will be bullied due to being white and if thats your fear then yabu

BrownSugaSprinkledOnPumpkinPie · 13/12/2008 20:06

Take your children to visit both schools and ask them which they prefer to go to.

Alternatively, go with the better results school.

AnarchyInAManger · 13/12/2008 20:06

Yes I'm sure you would have absolutely nothing in common with all those black parents

FGS.

People are people, children are children. We are all human.

You are making this a 'black/white thing' and then trying to pretend you are not, hiding behind bletherings about 'fitting in' and 'bullying'.

Why did you get bullied? Were you the only white kid?

I'd think that your children (well I'd hope) won't perform differently whether they're in a minority or a majority viz their skin colour but I suspect they'll get better results at a higher achieving school.

Having said ALL that, I disagree with faith schools fundamentally.

artichokes · 13/12/2008 20:08

You will be flamed. Why will you and DC "fit in better". Does the colour of skin dictate likes and dislikes, tastes and attitudes? In your mind it clearly does.

Also you have admitted that you are putting the colour factor above exams results.

You say your DC will be "very much the minority" but also say there are 25% white kids at the school. They will be less of a minority then most black kids in schools across England.

whoingodsnameami · 13/12/2008 20:08

And this is exactly the reason there will probably always be racism, when we teach our children they will mix better with thier own kind, what hope is there?

Fillyjonk · 13/12/2008 20:08

send them to the black school

let that prejudice skip a generation

WalkingInAWonderStuffingLand · 13/12/2008 20:08

Why then if your dc have different race friends do you think they won't fit in in a majority black school?? Odd

Why would you choose colour of skin over exam results? It would be unerstandable if the other school had a reputaion for race lead bullying, but just for skin colour it's quite bizarre.
Are the majority all part of th same community and geography too or is it only skin colour and heritage they have in common?

NattyTurkeyAndEggnog · 13/12/2008 20:09

i SO didnt mean black kids bully more lol, know what u mean butterfly about it being the white kids that bullied more.

take the valid point that i should visit the schools and base it on the general feelingof the school.

what's with all the

Divineintervention · 13/12/2008 20:10

bad keyboard.

VivaLaPotPourri · 13/12/2008 20:10

Apparently our local catholic primary has a 'higher than average ethic' whatever, and you know what - I am pleased. The fact that that school is the better acheiving speaks alot to me - obviously these are hardworking pupils, not black gang members.

NattyTurkeyAndEggnog · 13/12/2008 20:10

i was bullied because i was poor and i was sent to a rich school
i found the rich kids ganged up on the poor kids, so therefore i was in a minority group. and was bullied because of that.
