am posting this timidly in case it is misinterpred...

there is a choice of two catholic schools locally, one is three quaters black african, and the other is three quaters white british.

now i said to dh that id prefer the white majority school, as i feel my white children would fit in better, and i would with the other parents. i dont mean it in a way that i think white ppl are better, or anything like that, in fact the other school has higher exam results. just that i am concerned with sending my child to a school that they will be very much a minority.

but DH said that he should go to the better results school.

now im torn, because im very aware that kids pick up on a child being different, and i was bullied horrendously in school.

please dont read this as a black/white thing, i would feel the same about him going to a non-religous school for the same reasons.

ok i will stand back and wait for the back lash now

Perhaps you were bullied for harbouring racist thoughts??

and its not 25% white, the school also has indian, and chinese students (as written in ofstead report) so expect actual number of white students to be somewhat lower

This is the second racist thread on mumsnet today. What is the place coming too? Both OPs have protested weakly that of course they aren't racist, just misunderstood. I think it is time to take a break from this place, I really do.

Fillyjonk · 13/12/2008 20:14

I went to a school (girls grammar) where white girls like me were very much in a minority, like about ooh 20% if that?

it was a very good experience, I feel.

Minority, hopefully, does not mean weaker or more vunerable. I don't buy into the racism against white people that you seem to imply, we have no history of suffering. What do you think will happen? That your child will be subjected to gang violence, rap music, braided hair or an afro and low worn trousers?

fillyjonk, thank you that helps.

cant i just point out if this thread had been about rich/poor no one would have batted an eyelid?

Oh yes, this thread is hilarious..

Cant even explain why as it's so blaringly obvious....

I think though you should send your child to the school with more children. I'd hate to think there was a danger of you sending him anywhere near my kids.

I have to admit that I kind of understand in a way. I spent 3 years in a class with more black than white kids and it WAS very hard to fit in. Many of the conversations were not in English and a lot of the groups were based on nationality (e.g. the SA group, the Zimbabwean group, the west indian groups) and they were very tight groups that didnt even mix well with each other. I did make a few friends in each group but it was hard. A lot of the other white kids quickly gave up after being ignored by the other kids and just stuck together in the end so it was not much of a multicultural experience for most people in the class. I am not a naturally cliquey person and never like to restrict myself to just one group of friends, but it was harder to do this in that class than in any other.

I dont know if I would un-do my experience though? so I really cant say what you should do either way, plus who's to say that my experience was typical?

err, I think you'll find people would have still thought you were out of order if it was about rich and poor.

Did you start this thread inbetween x factor performances?

flouncerpoppedbackforadvice · 13/12/2008 20:22

Do JLS know?

NattyTurkeyAndEggnog · 13/12/2008 20:22

salbysea, that was point i was trying to get across.. having alot of people around you speaking a language u dont understand must be tough no?
i was thinking more cultral differances than anything,
for example if the school was say 25% white british 25% black african 25% indian and a few others to make up the remaining, there would be less of an issue, as its a mix, what concerns me is a HIGH percentage of students who english is a second language.
i just wondered wether this would effect how my child with only english would fit in?
am asking for other experiances in schools which a high percentage of one race/nationality especailly those with a diff lanaguage being used more than english.
