To ask DD to ask for extra Halloween sweets?

DS has unfortunately woken up today feeling ill and he's been sick a few times. I am not letting him out trick or treating in his condition, obviously. It's rotten luck and he's of course disappointed.

His older sister will be going round the neighbourhood with her friends. Do you think it would be OK for her to ask for one for her ill brother as well, to have when he's feeling better? I'm not sure if it's rude or not or people might think she was taking the piss?

Or I could ask her to share what she gets as it's always an awful lot but that doesn't seem all that fair to her.

I know I could just buy him a load of sweets but part of the fun is getting such a wide selection from all the different houses and he's already going to miss the main fun of dressing up and going round in the dark seeing all the decorations. But I will just do this for him if it's the best option?

What do you reckon?

Your DD will just come across as greedy.
Buy him some sweets yourself.

sprigatito · Today 14:53

I would happily give her extra, but some people are weirdly prickly about that sort of thing, so I’m not sure I would put her in the position of having to ask multiple strangers.

Beachbooks · Today 14:54

I think it’s a bit odd to be honest - also if I was DD I would be majorly cringing about having to ask.

I would just buy him his own sweets when he’s better

murasaki · Today 14:55

Totally unreasonable. He's not there, he doesn't get the treats. Buy him some yourself. Don't put her in an awkward position, or make her share hers.

outerspacepotato · Today 14:56

Don't have her do that. A lot of kids say that kind of stuff to get more candy and it's considered rude. And don't make her share. She's doing the work and she should get the reward.

Buy him some candy and that's it.

PaulBaker · Today 14:56

If I was DD, I would say I’d ask and then not actually do it. I’d be too embarrassed.

Bushmillsbabe · Today 14:56

Buy some sweets they both like, and swop some of the ones his sister gets with these, so they both get a mixture of sweets

igafasy · Today 14:56

Can’t you just buy sweets to add to her collection and then ask to share?

I think it’s unfair of her to have to ask and also carry two bags.

Merrybandofpirates · Today 14:57

How can he get the sweets if he doesn’t do his part of the deal? You need to tell a joke, sing, dance, whatever. You don’t just get sweets for nothing.

I would do exactly this.

TinyOcelot · Today 14:57

All right, seems like it was not a good idea! I wasn't sure but yeah I'll just get him something myself then.

I’d assume she was just being greedy and or encouraged by cheeky fucker parents.

Just buy him a bag of sweets.

If your son has gastroenteritis/noro or some other illness, I wouldn't want you or your DD coming around my house! I realise neither of you are sick- yet.

SockPlant · Today 14:57

nope - kids who come to mine get sweets. What they do with them is up to them. But I'm not handing out extras

Ellie1015 · Today 14:58

Is there plenty of houses in the area taking part? If so asked her to go to a few extra at the end for her brother.

I wouldnt ask for extra at the door step. I dont think unreasonable to share. My dds have want they want for a few days then they just become house sweets as far too many.

Nobody does any of that in many areas now. They just knock and you say Happy Halloween and give them the goodies!

This, your DD can either share some of her sweets or just but him some, it is unfortunate he isn't well, but don't put that on your Dd

Here you just have to dress up. But of course he won't be able to go out.

I'll make sure he gets something anyway as it isn't his fault he is ill and I don't think trick or treating is 'work', it's all great fun and he's gutted to miss it. But that's life.

I guess you’re in England then? You do it the American way. We do it properly in Scotland.

Boomer55 · Today 15:00

No. Just buy him some. Hallowe’en isn’t a pity party for those too poorly to attend. 🤷‍♀️

how old is Dd? I assume not Tony if she's going round without you so just talk to her. say you'll buy some sweets to top up what she gets / give her a fiver if she shares but I'd honestly hope I'd raised my kids to want to share

"I guess" always sounds American to me.

She's 11. That might be a good way to do it, thanks.

If a child asked me politely if she might take a bag/treat home for her younger brother who is sick and couldn't get out I think i would burst into tears and give her the lot 😂😂 poor wee soul, the kids love it so much and it's rotten luck. Asking politely is not a crime, as long as she is tentative for example would it be ok, do you have one to spare etc, then what's the problem, they can say no - if someone thinks she's greedy or conning them then that's a them problem they can say no or give her it then moan later, who cares what a shitty world they live in
