AIBU to think that women do as much to perpetuate misogyny as do men?

What the title says. I am also sure that I'm as guilty as this as the next woman. But I find a lot of the time that women can be very critical and judgemental of other women. A recent, concrete example was a situation with someone I follow on Instagram. A young disabled woman who had felt threatened by a man who pretended to be helpful but was actually predatory. The comments were awful, and about 60% of them were from women. Saying that he 'meant well' and that she needed to get over herself and that she should be grateful that someone wanted to help. I find this attitude shocking, and I also feel that any discussion of misogyny should also include misogyny from women.

Interesting question. I have found that the best way to counter any kind of misogyny has been to stay in full time work and do well in my career.

Once men know I sat on the executive committee of my last company I have noticed they speak to me much more as an equal. It really seems to change their attitudes. Obviously it’s not something it’s always appropriate to mention though!

I am also very good at calmly and politely calling out any misogyny because I won’t have it.

It's not about controlling women, it's got fuck all to do with women. It's about murder and the morality around it. If you put down the outrage and actually think about it for 5 minutes it's obvious.

I don't think any pro lifers hates me or wants to control me. I think they believe is abortion is murder and we all agree that murder is wrong and illegal. I disagree with them that abortion is murder and that a fetus is a person, but I don't think they hate me or wants to control me, I just think they don't understand science.

Then why do a lot of pro lifers also support the death penalty?

As I understand it, misogyny means ingrained prejudice against women.

Nothing I have ever seen described as misogyny fits this bill.

Most of the time the term is glibly applied to questioning or criticising women, or even just saying something a woman doesnt like.

I have no time for any kind of prejudice, but to me the term seems too cheap and easy, thrown around too quickly, exactly like "racist" has become.

I dont believe, for example, that we live in a misogynist society - a society which has ingrained prejudice against women?

The suggestion is absurd to me - not least as the population is mainly female - but of course I am open to being corrected on this point, if there are things I do not see, understand or perceive correctly.

Traditionally women were held in great esteem and enjoyed a whole range of social privilege and deference. They still do, to some extent, but feminism has been the enemy of this - arguing that, as equals of men, women do not require privilege and deference.

Could the partial loss of this traditional status be the reason why some women perceive misogyny?

For me a society with ingrained prejudice would be (eg) Nazi Germany and its prejudice against Jews, or Muslim nations with prejudice against non muslims, or restrictions on womens liberty.

That is, a system where certain others are formally and openly considered "lesser" and have discriminatory social restrictions placed on them and are even subject to violence.

The UK isnt perfect, but its a world away from these kinds of societies.

None as blind as those who do not want to see.

They are misogynist AND they misunderstand science. It isn't either or, it's both and.

No they're not misogynists because they're driving factor isn't hatred for women. Their driving factor is stupidity.

Because it's usually reserved for murderers I assume.

Women who have different views from you about abortion are not misogynists. Some women believe that true justice and equality cannot be built on an act that ends the life of another developing human being.

In the US there's a considerable overlap between the 'pro-life' brigade and the surrendered wives movement where the men make all the decisions and have all the power.

So where are your tears for the unwanted children who grow up knowing their mothers wanted to abort them, but couldn't?

Because they exist.

Being unwanted from conception to adulthood cuts to the very core.

Better a wanted baby than not.

All this time crying would be far better off spent actually doing something to help the struggling mothers - especially the ones abandoned by the fathers, of whom there are far too many - than wetting your pillowcase so much that you have put extra washes on instead.

People who grow up knowing their mothers didn't want them should be consoled about it and helped. There are people who go NC with abusive parents. Many people on MN have unfortunately have abusive parents I think we should support them and help them, not kill them.

I said perpetuate, not perpetrate. Obviously, men as a sex class are more violent than women. However, that fact in no way contradicts my point that women do much to enable misogyny. A great example is how many women threw other women under the bus over the rights of trans 'women'.

Yep, just proved your own point. This is just an excuse to, once again, attack a vulnerable group in our society. You’re not clever.

What 'vulnerable group'. If you're talking about trans 'women' you're wrong.

It is literally illegal to pay a woman less for doing the exact same job as a man. The gender pay gap is due to women working fewer hours or choosing lower paid roles.

This is grossly untrue. Look at Glasgow City Council as one teeny example. Having to essentially sack an entire workforce to renegotiate contracts to try to close the gender pay gap as men have been paid more for exactly the same roles and they don’t have the money to pay women the same rates. Now. Not a decade ago. Not a generation ago. Right now 🙄

Edited to point out that I’m not arguing the legality of women being paid less, I’m saying it STILL BLOODY HAPPENS.

Because they differentiate between an undeserved death and a deserved one. The foetus did nothing wrong and didn’t get a trial.

Weird responses. Yes, in my work experience over the last two decades and most recently with DEI, its 90% women with token men (majority gay).See "be kind"

Not more rights or less rights. Both people have an equal right to be alive. I don't think we should kill anyone, especially babies in utero.

You don’t. You think a foetus has the right to make use of someone else’s body when that person doesn’t want that. We don’t let anyone else do that.

We don’t force someone to give someone else a kidney, no matter how badly the recipient needs it. Even a dead person’s right to opt out of organ donation is respected. If you think abortion should be illegal, you think a pregnant woman has fewer rights than a corpse. Think about that.

Which is hypocritical and fucked up. Even more fucked up when the mother is the one who dies because she had no access to safe abortion.

There’s nothing pro life about the movement. It’s all about forced birth.

Ladygodalmighty · Yesterday 22:26

Sometimes, women enforce traditional norms onto other women as a form of self-preservation or social currency. By distancing themselves from women who break traditional moulds (or by criticising them), they signal that they are "safe" or "good" according to society's rules. 8 believe this is called internalised misogyny 🤔

VioletsTale · Yesterday 22:35

Mothers living in states that banned abortion nearly 2x as likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth, or soon after giving birth, compared to mothers living in supportive states where abortion was legal and accessible
Women’s risk of maternal death in Texas was 155% higher than in California

Pro life you say?

Tell that to Tierra Walker, Amber Nicole Thurman,Josseli Barnica, CG Graham and all the other poor women who died needlessly.

This is it in a nutshell really. The firm belief that if you are a “good” woman , the “right kind” of woman (all decided by men , of course) then you will be in good standing, good social capital and you will be “safe”. Any woman(or girl) who has something bad happen to her , must be somehow at fault. Absolutely deluded horseshit, but on and on it goes.

Why does everyone get so shouty on Mumsnet? This started as an interesting discussion but as so often happens the name calling starts - why can’t we just agree to disagree sometimes?
Some people seem to enjoy a good harangue!
