Too old to hold DS's hand?

At what age did you stop holding your DS's hand

DS is 5 and very much a mummy's boy (not going to lie secretly.love it, he's my last which I am happy about as have 2 and know how lucky I am and juat have no desire to do the new orn phase again)

He still wants to hold my hand. All the time. Walking to school. Out shopping etc.

Dh hates it and constantly tells me to let go.

Today we have come away on holiday and were walking through the airport, I had a suitcase in one hand and DS's hand in the other and DH went mad telling me to let go and stop treating him like a child (even though he is one)

I argued its a busy foreign airport so would rather he held.my hand and was met with moaning by dh about how i treated him like a much you get child etc etc

For reference, dd is 10 and would still happily hold my hand if dh didn't moan at us both about that as well

Your DH is being ridiculous. I still, at times hold the hand of my 9 year old son and 11 year old daughter!! Especially if it's busy and definitely at an airport.
I'm in my 40s and even at times hold my mum's hand if we're out somewhere and it's busy!!!

Your husband is utterly ridiculous and you should definitely hold their hands!!!! Tell him to mind his own business!

We both regularly hold DS(7)'s hand, not looking forward to the day he decides he is too old or too cool.

He refuses to hold both of our hands simultaneously though "I don't want to be in the middle!" no idea why.

I could see it being annoying if one of you tends to go faster than the other, as it makes it difficult to regulate your stride, but being in the middle also means there's a chance you get to do the "1, 2, 3 Whheeeeee" thing where you get swung in the air.

Oh wow! I have an almost 22 yr old, a 20 year old, a 16 year old and a 10 year old. Wonder what your DH would say about us. They all still hold my hand except the 20 year old. It's very normal and natural for us. I love it. I would definitely not change it.

I hold hands with my 5 year old all the time

Hubbaleh · Today 06:41

I always hold my 7 year old's hand while walking and my 10 year old often wants to hold my hand too. So I do. At airports and other busy places I insist on it for both of them, although if my hands are full I tell the older one to just hold on to my arm instead.

We also have a thing where me squeezing their hands means that I love them. So when older child is upset by something but doesn't want to talk about it, I'll squeeze his hand a few times 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh and my DH will also hold their hands when walking. Literally nothing weird about it at all.

chickbean · Today 06:46

DS1 is 20 and he'll often hold my hand when we're out together. I occasionally wonder whether people think I am a cougar 🤣 DD (16) also holds my hand when we're walking together. They stopped when they were younger, and I didn't force it - but it's their choice. DS2 (18) doesn't.

Your DH sounds awful. Was he brought up with no physical affection?

HylianShroom · Today 06:50

Your husband is a pathetic little worm man.

Eatingdirt · Today 06:54

your H sounds like a sexist shit if he says this bevause your child is a boy.

My ten year old DS still holds my hand sometimes.

You need to watch out for your H around your son. Your child needs security and connection, not ‘toughen up’ bullshit.

writingsonthewall · Today 06:56

My 13 year old still holds my hand sometimes

Tamtim · Today 06:58

My sixteen year old DD will still hold my hand sometimes. Your DH is an idiot.

lessglittermoremud · Today 06:58

Your DH is being ridiculous, my 6 year old still holds my hand to walk to school, we have to cross busy roads etc
I think based on my others who are now in secondary school he will probably stop naturally teaching for it when he’s about 8.
Lots of adults hold hands, it’s usually seen as a sign of closeness and affection.

I think 5 in busy places is fine but I do see where your dh is coming from there is a cut off. My sister use to still hold my nephews hand at 8 and he was tall and looked older then his age and i use to comment on that

Then you were grossly out of line and lucky your sister still puts up with you. An eight year old holding a parent's hand is a very, very basic level of affection and you were trying to push your sister to deny her child normal human interaction.

EnterFunnyNameHere · Today 07:00

Do you and DH not hold hands as adults? It's just a sign of affection?

If hes 15 and still reaching for my hand then I agree that's different

But at 5 I am still encouraging it

I don't know why DH has such a thing about it. Jealousy maybe. He thinks I treat ds as a baby because he is our last but its not that, I am well and truly.over the baby phase (and have a few baby nieces and nephews i get to enjoy baby cuddles with and then hand back!!)

And by treating like a baby its because I will hold his hand, help empty his school bag/lunch box after school and will defend DS if Dh is telling him off but there's a reason behind what he has done

He’s a fucking twat. I’ll hold my 5 year old’s hand and enjoy it until he wants to stop. My 9 year old is already over it, only very rarely 😭

You're Dh is crazy. A 5 year old should be holding your hand at all times when out in public. How would dh feel if he did a runner or stopped when you didn't and you lost him. I still held my Dads hand when i was 15. I am nearly 40 and still hold my husbands hand cos I get anxious when alone.

Edited

And this is exactly why holding your teens and young adults hands is not ok

That's insane.

My 14 y.o. likes to hold my hand if he's feeling unsure or in a busy place.

How do you keep 5 y.o. safe in a busy environment without holding their hand?

You need to teach him confidence and independence

SALaw · Today 07:04

Has your husband always been a dickhead?

Youhadrambledonfor18pages · Today 07:06

5?! He’s being ridiculous!

My son still held my hand till around 9/10.

He still sometimes holds my hand (voluntarily) when we’re chilling watching tv together and he’s 17! He’s a popular kid with plenty of friends and has a girlfriend he’s been with for over a year.

Badgerandfox227 · Today 07:07

I still hold my DS hand and he’s 8, he also still holds my DH hand as well. Your DH is in the wrong.

Uniqueusername3 · Today 07:08

He's jealous. Either he had shit parents and he's jealous that your children's mummy loves them more than his mummy loved him.

Or he's possessive of you and jealous that you love your children more than you love him.

Or both.

Does he complain that you do things for the kids that you don't do for him or that you have no time for him because you're always with the kids. Like they're his competition? My ex couldn't handle it when we had DS because he stopped being the most important thing in my life.

Uniqueusername3 · Today 07:09

Oh and our 5yo still hold mine and my husband's hands.

Sartre · Today 07:09

Well I have to hold my 6 year old’s hand constantly because he has SEN and would think nothing of running away at any given moment so… I also still hold my 8 year old DS’s hand sometimes. Your DH sounds like a sexist pig.

Arcticbattle32 · Today 07:10

This is crazy, of course it’s normal to hold a 5 year old’s hand! I thought you were going to say 12/13+. Keep on holding his hand!!
