Too old to hold DS's hand?

At what age did you stop holding your DS's hand

DS is 5 and very much a mummy's boy (not going to lie secretly.love it, he's my last which I am happy about as have 2 and know how lucky I am and juat have no desire to do the new orn phase again)

He still wants to hold my hand. All the time. Walking to school. Out shopping etc.

Dh hates it and constantly tells me to let go.

Today we have come away on holiday and were walking through the airport, I had a suitcase in one hand and DS's hand in the other and DH went mad telling me to let go and stop treating him like a child (even though he is one)

I argued its a busy foreign airport so would rather he held.my hand and was met with moaning by dh about how i treated him like a much you get child etc etc

For reference, dd is 10 and would still happily hold my hand if dh didn't moan at us both about that as well

Mine all held my hand up to about 9 or 10. It’s honestly so sad when you realise that they haven’t reached for your hand in a while.

It’s very sad, and strange, that your DH has behaved like this about it.

Did he have a very cold upbringing himself?

At 5, I would have made them hold my hand in an airport or any other busy situation.

It's about safety and being sensible. 5 year old should be holding a hand in all circumstances for at least another year and quite reasonably two. Give macho posturing the elbow.

Your husband sounds like a prime cunt. He is damaging your children with his attitude.

CanterThroughChaos · Yesterday 22:28

What the actual hell have I just read?!?! Your poor children 😢

I thought at first this was a gendered issue, like ‘boys don’t hold hands’, but then you said he does it about your DD! Wtf is this actually about? What has he said is actually wrong with it ?

I hope your sister told you to shut up and mind your own business

No she stopped and dn seemed happy to have a bit off freedom

What the hell. This is so sad. DS held my hand all the time until around 9. Then gradually a bit less over the next 2 years.

This summer when he was 12 he hadn't done it for a long time but randomly reached for mine and DH hand as we walked along the beach. It was beautiful and I knew it could well be the very last time so I cherished every moment and I know DH did too as we spoke about it later.

Your DH is being VERY weird

My 12yo DD still holds my hand. I’m enjoying it whilst it lasts.

MandemChickenShop · Yesterday 22:33

your husband is being a total tool. if a child wants to hold their parents hand let them and don't judge.

there's enough shit in this world already. no need to be judgemental of a simple natural thing like this

At some point you have to push your kids along a bit if they are acting young for there age. What if her mates are hanging out in town and your daughter walks past holding mummy's hand

why? what's wrong with it?

Firecrackles · Yesterday 22:35

Your DH needs to back off! It’s perfectly natural to hold your child’s hand as long as they want you to!

Somedayitwillclick · Yesterday 22:35

My 6 year DS holds my hand and his dad hand still when walking to school etc and definitely when crossing roads, in airports. We attend a lot of sport and music events he has to hold hands when leaving. My 10 year old DS has to hold hands when coming through the crowds as above. Sometimes when we are walking home from school he will reach for my hand - never his dads though but through his choice

If hes 15 and still reaching for my hand then I agree that's different

But at 5 I am still encouraging it

I don't know why DH has such a thing about it. Jealousy maybe. He thinks I treat ds as a baby because he is our last but its not that, I am well and truly.over the baby phase (and have a few baby nieces and nephews i get to enjoy baby cuddles with and then hand back!!)

And by treating like a baby its because I will hold his hand, help empty his school bag/lunch box after school and will defend DS if Dh is telling him off but there's a reason behind what he has done

Mine is that age and he offers me his arm when we’re out for a walk, intermittently. I take it most of the time. Neither of us is bothered by what others think.

Your poor children, your dh is very strange and uncaring.

Supporting2026 · Yesterday 22:38

Your DH sounds like a pretty obnoxious father.

NorwegianForest · Yesterday 22:38

Your DH sounds horrible.

MyArtfulGreySloth · Yesterday 22:38

My son has stopped holding my hand on the way to school now. He’s 10 😭 still lets me hug him goodbye on the playground though, for now. Your dh says you shouldn’t hold a 5 year olds hand? wtf. That’s bizarre.

Bushmillsbabe · Yesterday 22:39

My 7 year old holds my hand everyday on the way to and from school, through her choice. My 11 year old think she is too old, but links arms with me.

5 is definitely not too old to hold your hand, how ridiculous! Does your DH never hold your hand? Sometimes hand holding is an act of affection and connection. No one is ever too old for that!

InterestedDad37 · Yesterday 22:42

Strange husband. It's a perfectly natural thing to do. Ignore him.
