Too old to hold DS's hand?

At what age did you stop holding your DS's hand

DS is 5 and very much a mummy's boy (not going to lie secretly.love it, he's my last which I am happy about as have 2 and know how lucky I am and juat have no desire to do the new orn phase again)

He still wants to hold my hand. All the time. Walking to school. Out shopping etc.

Dh hates it and constantly tells me to let go.

Today we have come away on holiday and were walking through the airport, I had a suitcase in one hand and DS's hand in the other and DH went mad telling me to let go and stop treating him like a child (even though he is one)

I argued its a busy foreign airport so would rather he held.my hand and was met with moaning by dh about how i treated him like a much you get child etc etc

For reference, dd is 10 and would still happily hold my hand if dh didn't moan at us both about that as well

No she stopped and dn seemed happy to have a bit off freedom

Entirely different situation.

Busybeemumm · Yesterday 23:56

I hold my 10 year olds hand. I'll hold it for as long as possible. Childhood passes by so quickly. This can't be the only red flag by your DH. He sounds like a horrible dad tbh.

Undones · Yesterday 23:56

Hes 5, 60 months old to me hes still a toddler.
My sisters son held her hand till almost ten her daughter still does shes 21 now, well link arms more.

OneFunBrickNewt · Today 00:01

Lots of Y5 and even some Y6 kids hold their parents' hands at pick up, boys and girls.
Your husband is being absurd.

Winnie27101981 · Today 00:01

My son is 15 and obviously no longer holds my hand 😅 but still comes and gives me cuddles. I love it!

At 5 holding hands is beyond normal! What an odd thing for your husband to say! You hold on to that little man’s hand as long as he wants to hold yours!

Ophy83 · Today 00:03

My DS is 13 and will still hold my hand for a minute or two if we are in a town where there is zero chance of bumping into one of his friends

What is wrong with your DH? He's 5! You should be holding his hand in an airport for safety if nothing else. At best he's a moron, at worst he's a shit dad.

This covers it exactly.

butternutsquashed82 · Today 00:06

Your husband sounds like a fucking moron! Your son is 5… he’s still a little boy!

Edenmum2 · Today 00:07

My DD is 4.5 and has only really started wanting to hold my hand fairly recently, it would be the most unnatural thing in the world for me to say ‘no, you’re too old for that’

there is nothing more off putting than a man who is jealous of his child. Tell HIM to grow the fuck up.

Stickwomble · Today 00:07

My old boyfriend who was 24 used to hold hands with his mum on walks. European. I was mortified.

I think it’s very sad you can’t hold hands with your children without being reprimanded. That would be relationship ending for me.

nighttimemusings · Today 00:14

ds 11 still reaches for my hand sometimes- it’s lovely!

PS5Gamer · Today 00:14

Your Husband is an absolute Knobhead.

Weewah · Today 00:20

My 14 year old spontaneously held my hand walking through Central Park the other day. I mean, for about ten seconds, but it was sweet.

OP, your DH needs therapy.

undergroundandoverground · Today 00:23

Jesus Christ. What a horrible man.

Hold your dd's hand as much as she wants you to.
Hold your ds's hand as much as he wants you to.
Put your husband in the bin. Seriously.

You're Dh is crazy. A 5 year old should be holding your hand at all times when out in public. How would dh feel if he did a runner or stopped when you didn't and you lost him. I still held my Dads hand when i was 15. I am nearly 40 and still hold my husbands hand cos I get anxious when alone.

Edited

At ALL times, aged five? Each to their own but feels wildly excessive and over protective to me. (Obviously sometimes and in certain situations)

hypnovic · Today 00:31

Dh is a wanker
Airport you hold the bloody child
My daughter is 17 and will slip her little hamd in mine still and it brings me joy

Calliopespa · Today 00:38

This is the first time I have realised people might be noticing me holding my dc's hands in public and having their perverse little negative thoughts about it!

Do I mind? Not one jot! Somewhere like an airport it's a safety and practicality thing. Your DH has obviously never lost a dc in the crowd and had to scurry around looking for them as the Gate closes. Neither have I - mostly because I mostly have held their hand at an airport, as does DH.

Why on earth would this be weird?

WillieBanjo · Today 00:39

Really sorry your DH is an alpha prick. I regularly hold my 10 yr old DS hand . 8 yr old never wanted to so he doesn’t they both are the same with Mum.

have a lovely holiday x

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · Today 00:40

I still accept my DS's proffered hand every now and then, and he's nearly 17. Saying that, I only tend to do this when we're walking in a family unit now, as I'd hate people to think we were a couple 😂

Obviously he doesn't do this much anymore, but he's one to appreciate physical comfort when a bit jaded.

1coconut2coconut3coconut4 · Today 00:46

Anyone that wants to tell you what to do to keep your child safe and give them comfort can fuck off. That is what I would be telling your husband. I would absolutely be holding my kid's hand in a busy airport!

I think 5 in busy places is fine but I do see where your dh is coming from there is a cut off. My sister use to still hold my nephews hand at 8 and he was tall and looked older then his age and i use to comment on that

What a very weird post!

grinandslothit · Today 00:49

Of course you should hold his hand
I swear some of these men are the biggest babies, jealous of their own children

ClaudettedeBeauvoir · Today 00:49

My 12 year old daughter held my hand at the weekend. It was dark, rainy, and we were in a busy unfamiliar city.
5 is still so little.

Dancethroughthestorm · Today 01:03

You have a husband issue. I imagine there’s more to this and this is just the tip of the iceberg. So sorry for your children.

auraamber · Today 01:15

5 is so little still. My mum never held my hand or hugged me/cuddled up to me and I wish I had that
thankfully my DP is as soft as me and will hold my hand all the time
