Too old to hold DS's hand?

At what age did you stop holding your DS's hand

DS is 5 and very much a mummy's boy (not going to lie secretly.love it, he's my last which I am happy about as have 2 and know how lucky I am and juat have no desire to do the new orn phase again)

He still wants to hold my hand. All the time. Walking to school. Out shopping etc.

Dh hates it and constantly tells me to let go.

Today we have come away on holiday and were walking through the airport, I had a suitcase in one hand and DS's hand in the other and DH went mad telling me to let go and stop treating him like a child (even though he is one)

I argued its a busy foreign airport so would rather he held.my hand and was met with moaning by dh about how i treated him like a much you get child etc etc

For reference, dd is 10 and would still happily hold my hand if dh didn't moan at us both about that as well

I have children older than yours and both hold my hand. Not necessarily in front of her friends though.

ShowOfHands · Yesterday 22:50

My 6ft 15yr old sometimes holds my hand, as does 19yr old dd.

They do it in what I think is a fairly cool affectionate way. It's a sign of love/joy/kinship.

Wtf is wrong with your DH?

Disturbia81 · Yesterday 22:53

I still hold my 9 year olds

BibbityBoppityTwo · Yesterday 22:56

Your DH is ridiculous. My kids were both absolutely holding my hand at five. My nearly 9 year old still likes to hold my hand sometimes. Your husband has some kind of complex he needs to address so he stops projecting weird shit onto you and your children.

I hope you're joking

I still hold my mum's hand sometimes - she's 76yrs old and I'm middle-aged.

What's the issue?

@Boyandgirlmummy88 your DH is a cruel man with issues. DO NOT stop holding both your DS & DD's hands just because of his comments. Simply tell him to go see a therapist for his issues. Show your children all the love and emotion you can, because they aren't going to get any from their cold and cruel father.

BTW my eldest DD has only just stopped holding hands at 13yrs, my youngest, almost 11yrs still holds hands with both me and DH.

Butchyrestingface · Yesterday 22:57

How can you bear to be with a man who is jealous of his own 5 yo child?

This cannot be the only way in which he's a total fruitloop.

My mum's father took all her dolls off her at the age of 5 (this was the 40s) because he said she was too old for toys once she started school. She had to play with milk bottles after that. Does your husband do stuff like that?

Your dh is an idiot.

Mine is that age and he offers me his arm when we’re out for a walk, intermittently. I take it most of the time. Neither of us is bothered by what others think.

I have two sons - 15 and 18 - both are still very affectionate. My dd is too - she’s 17. None of them are even slightly embarrassed that they like their parents.

Thundertoast · Yesterday 23:00

Let me guess, he's also an 'old fashioned' guy whose got funny views about gender roles and his sons looking 'girly' too?

MomOfBirmingham · Yesterday 23:00

I had a very enjoyable walk holding my 10yp hand today - he doesn't let me at home, but as we were away he wasn't going to bump into a mate 😂

OP your husband is a tit. Your son is still very little, enjoy him.

Conniebygaslight · Yesterday 23:02

Your child should hold your hand for as long as they want to. And you should hold your child’s hand as long as you need for them to be safe. Your DH is appalling…..

Lindy2 · Yesterday 23:03

You tell your DH to pack it in right now.

Your poor 10 year old DD being bullied in to not holding your hand.

Your poor 5 year old also being bullied by him. Of course you help a 5 year old with their school bag, packed lunch etc! They are 5. You are their mum. You also hold their hand whenever you want to.

Your DH needs to stop this behaviour. Prioritise your children's needs.

I think 5 in busy places is fine but I do see where your dh is coming from there is a cut off. My sister use to still hold my nephews hand at 8 and he was tall and looked older then his age and i use to comment on that

Id tell you to fuck off.

You think a little 8 year old is too old to hold their mum's hands?
Jesus Christ.

EIGHT!!!

Were you not given enough cuddles or something as a kid that makes you think kids wanting a platonic physical connection with the person they love most on the entire planet is something to think is wrong?

LondonLass2026 · Yesterday 23:04

My son is 30 so although we aren't going to hold hands when we get to see each other, he will give my hand a squeeze.

As for when he was a child, I held his hand until maybe 11 or 12.

5 is TINY. And an international airport! Does your husband realise how quickly things can go to shit in those places? Husband went "mad"... Why? This is so disturbing.

@Boyandgirlmummy88 , I’m of the opinion that I’d hold their hand until they expressed a desire for me not to. For your information my sons are 36 and 32 both have recently reached for my hand when we’re out, neither would reject me if I wanted to hold their hand. I know I’m very lucky.

Pinkballoon5 · Yesterday 23:05

Mine is 26. I still reach for his hand when we cross a busy road then I feel belatedly how much bigger his hand is than mine and we laugh.

Slothsandspiderman · Yesterday 23:05

My son is 12 and 5’8”. Him and my DH will occasionally hold hands. Infact they last did it at the airport this weekend . He often hugs us both and tells us he loves it. I’m incredibly proud to have a son with emotional intelligence and comfortable in showing it. My husbands father is a good
man though wasn’t particularly demonstrative. I suspect your DH is just reflecting on his childhood.

I want to be you when my DC are grown! My 12 year old still holds my hand. Not anywhere his friends might see mind 😂 but sure in a busy airport he would. And when he’s sad he likes to. I’ve always thought this was lovely and just like I’d never force him I’d never discourage him either. I still occasionally hold my dads hand, and it’s lovely too!

mamaison · Yesterday 23:09

WTF. Some strange issue that your husband needs to get help for. He should keep his mouth zipped about these feelings in the mean time. So odd. Still hold my teen son’s hand sometimes even though he’s 8 inches taller than me.

I would too. How awful. It’s normal to love, cuddle and reassure your dc well into their adolescence. Rejecting affection and comfort to/from an 8 year old is seriously cruel.

Emptyandsad · Yesterday 23:11

I held my mum's hand when I was 40! And I still get cuddles off my son and he's 27 and 6'2"

ItsGooodToTalk · Yesterday 23:13

You are definitely NOT being unreasonable. Your DH clearly has issues. Was he forced into holding hands when he was growing up?

StampOnTheGround · Yesterday 23:13

Accidentally clicked YABU when trying to scroll one handed, sorry! (You definitely are NOT)

I'm 57 & my mum still reaches for my hand to cross a busy road! The irony is, as she is mid 80s she needs me more than i need her (hand crossing the road) 💕

@Boyandgirlmummy88 you need to tell him seriously to stop being such a fucking idiot. If your kids want to hold your hand, they're not too old.!! Theyll soon let you know when they don't want to anymore. & FFS 5 years old in a busy airport, he'd have to be an absolute fucking idiot to have an issue with that.

I'm guessing, though that this is either the tip of the iceberg or the straw that should be breaking the camels back!!

I very very much doubt this is the only thing he is an absolute twat about

collabown · Yesterday 23:15

Madness. I still hold my 8 year old's hand, and walk arm in arm with my mum amd dad. Never thought anything of it! It's nice. Your DH is a moron.
