Too old to hold DS's hand?

At what age did you stop holding your DS's hand

DS is 5 and very much a mummy's boy (not going to lie secretly.love it, he's my last which I am happy about as have 2 and know how lucky I am and juat have no desire to do the new orn phase again)

He still wants to hold my hand. All the time. Walking to school. Out shopping etc.

Dh hates it and constantly tells me to let go.

Today we have come away on holiday and were walking through the airport, I had a suitcase in one hand and DS's hand in the other and DH went mad telling me to let go and stop treating him like a child (even though he is one)

I argued its a busy foreign airport so would rather he held.my hand and was met with moaning by dh about how i treated him like a much you get child etc etc

For reference, dd is 10 and would still happily hold my hand if dh didn't moan at us both about that as well

Your DH is very wrong. Five is a baby and they need close supervision in public.

When DS was 15, I was crossing a road with him when a car pulled in. I instinctively grabbed his hand and held it all the way across. He let me 😀

Show your H this thread. He’s being an odd ball. Was he not shown much love when he was a child? What were his parents like to him as usually the cycle continues unfortunately?

Happyjoe · Yesterday 23:16

It's about holding hands now, what's next? Some other out of whack idea of your husband and how his son should 'be a man'?

As many have already said, your husband is being a dick quite frankly. He's 5 - and to still go on about it in a busy airport, wow.

WhatHoJeeves · Yesterday 23:18

The time to stop holding your child's hand is when they no longer want to - and what a sad day that is.

I couldn't be married to a man who behaved like your husband. Shower your children with all the love and affection you can, while you can.

OriginalSkang · Yesterday 23:18

Ive never heard of anything like this. My dd would still hold my hand sometimes up to 11

Your DH sounds horrible. He's five! Of course there is nothing wrong with holding your hand!

Whattodo1610 · Yesterday 23:23

Oh he’s one of ‘them’ is he (dh) 🙄 Boys should be rough and tough, not namby pamby 🙄 (not words/phrases I use or agree with), horrible old fashioned male chauvinist pig.

SabrinaThwaite · Yesterday 23:23

5 is really very young, and you need to keep them safely with you in busy places. Your DD is young too, it would be awful to lose that physical bond.

PDAblues · Yesterday 23:30

That's insane.

My 14 y.o. likes to hold my hand if he's feeling unsure or in a busy place.

How do you keep 5 y.o. safe in a busy environment without holding their hand?

GetAbsOrDieTrying · Yesterday 23:32

Sorry your DH should get his head examined! A 5 year old should hold an adults hand in a busy airport where they can get lost easily. I travelled long haul with my two children in the summer. DS 5 and DD 9, I carried a back up and no carry on to leave my hands free to hold their hands so it was easier when we were running through the airport for transit flights as our first flight was delayed and we barely had enough time to catch our next flight. What is his problem with holding hands. My kids often hold my hand while we walk to school out of choice. Why would you refuse?! There are only little for so long! Tell DH to stop being an idiot!

BoredZelda · Yesterday 23:32

What is it with husbands and kids hand holding. We had another one yesterday.

Scout2016 · Yesterday 23:32

Wjat else does this extend to? Does he let your son cry when upsrt or hurt and cuddle him, or does he get impatiently told to pack it in?
Does your son get to play with dolls and bake?

I feel sorry for your daughter as she's missing out on that chance of building on her security and affection in your bond too.

Aussiesgettingsmashed · Yesterday 23:33

This has to be a joke. If not your husband is the biggest spanner in the history of the world.

Delphiniumandlupins · Yesterday 23:36

My seven year old granddaughter still holds my hand. Not all the time but sometimes, even if we're not sure who is looking after who. I would definitely take her hand in a busy place. My adult son lets me take his arm. Your DH is a pillock.

MariaMoo · Yesterday 23:38

He needs to get over himself.

I hope you still hold BOTH your kids hands and I hope he is left trailing alone behind.

Twobigbabies · Yesterday 23:39

I still hold hands with my 9 and 11 year olds, why on earth wouldn't I? Kids who feel loved and looked after will be more independent not less. Is your DH jealous and controlling in other ways?

JustAThought8 · Yesterday 23:39

My dad would never hold my hand. He used to stick out his index finger, and I was supposed to hold that, but only for a little while. At five, he is so little. Of course, he should be able to hold your hand.

NotNowMadam · Yesterday 23:41

Your DH sounds like a jealous bellend. Mine are similar ages and still hold my hand. My eldest is well into teens and still holds my hand sometimes. I love it!

ButtercupYellow26 · Yesterday 23:42

It sounds very much as if your DH is jealous.
Ignore the idiot.

MCF86 · Yesterday 23:44

Are they still allowed to cuddle with you on the sofa? Get a kiss goodnight?
It's really sad that he thinks this basic level of care and affection is abnormal. What's his relationship like with his parents now?
(That isn't an excuse for going on about it though)

Kittkats · Yesterday 23:44

I was led by my DC on this. Eldest DS was about 7, DD still does occasionally at 18, next DS around 7, younger DS around 10. The eldest 2 DS are now more likely to put an arm around my shoulders (DS21) or link arms (DS14). DS13 currently avoids contact in public!
5 is definitely peak hand holding age!

My 6ft 15yr old sometimes holds my hand, as does 19yr old dd.

They do it in what I think is a fairly cool affectionate way. It's a sign of love/joy/kinship.

Wtf is wrong with your DH?

I spent last weekend wandering through Manhattan holdings hands with my 18 year old! Nothing lovelier.

TeenLifeMum · Yesterday 23:45

Did your dh not get enough love as a dc?

user1492757084 · Yesterday 23:46

Totally needed - to hold an adults hand in an airport, near a road, in a large shoppjng centre or when ever they want to.

If my five year old would not hold my hand in a foreign airport I'd be saying,
"Hold your Dad's hand then please."

Do you ask DS5 to hold his Dad's hand near traffic?
Holding hands is quite usual until even 9 years old.
Does your DH hold your hand?

ToadRage · Yesterday 23:52

You're Dh is crazy. A 5 year old should be holding your hand at all times when out in public. How would dh feel if he did a runner or stopped when you didn't and you lost him. I still held my Dads hand when i was 15. I am nearly 40 and still hold my husbands hand cos I get anxious when alone.
