To be sick of people being so negative about the things Burnham is putting into place

Nobody thinks they’ll fix everything but he’s doing small things that can be actioned quickly and will drastically improve aspects of our lives that have got worse over the last two decades - parking fines, music on trains, vaping on public transport. They’re all small things, yes, but they will make things a little better.

He’s not said anywhere that he thinks that doing these things will save Britain. So why are people acting like he has said that?

A large number of comments in social media are just bots

Walkerzoo · 20/10/2026 17:18

Seriously?
I don't get a train, I don't park a car...and when I did get a train when you face abusive behaviour there is no train guards or police...

Might be a good initiative as a mayor.

As a prime minister no where near where the post holder should be.

Cost of living crisis, no agenda, no jobs as businesses can't afford workers... No training...

So Andy. Can you please read a book on ideas for what a prime minister should do and start doing them

Ah, one of these!

He is very clearly multitasking - there is a budget coming next week. Very clearly a lot of these things will be addressed then. But doing things that benefit everyday people will help.

I get public transport everyday. All it will take is one or two of the kids that sit and watch TikTok on their phones to get a fine before they stop. Same with the trains. Are you really of the belief that if something doesn’t benefit you directly, it shouldn’t be done?

I agree. I read the recent post about parking fines, and after just being screwed over by one car park (was moving house to the redirected mail didn't get to me in time), I thought good on you lad! Then saw loads of people whinging about boats underneath it. Everything comes back to boats. Like he is not allowed to address anything else.

Because they can't fault the things, but it would kill them to acknowledge the PM has done anything positive. If he gave them the moon on a stick they'd complain there weren't any stars with it, what they really wanted was the sun, they didn't like the stick, and who was going to pay for it anyway.

histrainersbythedoor · 20/10/2026 17:26

Also @Walkerzoounemployment has fallen, as per the ONS today. So clearly something is going well!

What is the issue with the proposed new rules to end rip-off parking charges?

It’s because things really do point to improvements and Nigel is worried.

Not a flag waving fan of Burnham or Labour, but these smaller measures will actually improve life a lot and help to reduce the general shittification of our country. I'm sure he's also looking at bigger stuff.

Same with Sadiq Khan. He could solve the world economic crisis, bring peace to the Middle East and cure cancer, and the bots and non-Londoners would still bang on about ULEZ charges

Raiderofthelostbattenburg · 20/10/2026 17:28

I agree with you, OP, but I do think alot of the negativity is online, not neccessarily from bots, but from people who have a very deeply entrenched dislike of any vaguely left wing politician. Because the fact is, despite the online negativity, in the real world he's consistently polling way ahead of any other political leader in terms of personal popularity, so he must be doing something people like.

I also find it interesting, because the idea that fixing the small irritations and behaviours make people's day to day lives difficult or frustrating, and through those small improvements, improving how people feel about society as a whole is hardl new. David Cameron was famously very big on this kind of policy making, and I don't remember anyone calling him parorchial. Which makes it quite hard not to read a bit of classism and anti-Northern bias into some of the attack lines being levelled at the Prime Minister.

dontcookwontcook · 20/10/2026 17:28

Well does he have any actual ideas or just small mini changes?

BIWI · 20/10/2026 17:28

Yes. I'm sure he has both Hmm

There is nothing wrong with them per se, but they are so trivial. They play into the hands of people who said he was massively underweight for the job. They make him look like he’s still thinking like the mayor of a small city rather than the leader of a G7 and NATO nation.

i hope he will silence all his critics with a superb budget that genuinely stimulates growth and tackles welfare and public spending to invest in business growth and defence.

"Ministers are this week set to release plans for 22,400 apprenticeships a year in businesses such as accountants, legal services and consultants, in addition to 40,000 placements in the construction industry."

This.

But also the surrounds himself with idiots like Lucy Powell, Angela Rayner, etc. It doesn't give people confidence.

But the trivial things going to shit is part of why things feel so awful in this country.

Playing music out loud on public transport, huge parking fines, vaping on public transport. They’re all part of enshittification of daily life and fixing them will help restore the social contract.
