To be sick of people being so negative about the things Burnham is putting into place

Nobody thinks they’ll fix everything but he’s doing small things that can be actioned quickly and will drastically improve aspects of our lives that have got worse over the last two decades - parking fines, music on trains, vaping on public transport. They’re all small things, yes, but they will make things a little better.

He’s not said anywhere that he thinks that doing these things will save Britain. So why are people acting like he has said that?

Yes because everyone has to love Labour . Meanwhile, back in a democracy...

What is the issue with the proposed new rules to end rip-off parking charges?

nothing at all- but we’ve had over two years of Labour- people are desperate and are looking for bigger picture larger scale improvements
we’ll see what happens in the budget- that will give us a clearer idea of how he’s thinking

AbouttimeIhadanewusername · 20/10/2026 17:59

I voted for Starmer. Burnham is an unelected upstart. He has absolutely no integrity.

BTW: The parking reforms have been 7 years in the making. So started under a previous government.

BluebellBeth · 20/10/2026 17:59

not everyone gets a pay rise every year

RowsOfFlowers · 20/10/2026 17:59

I hope bigger changes will be coming too. Though I’m a fan of some of these small changes….

Wait for the budget?

Latest poll has Labour at 30%, so going in the right direction.

It’s all very encouraging. It’s funny when you think about the excessive excitement from right wing voters about the so-called ‘Badenoch bounce’ last week.

Walkerzoo · 20/10/2026 18:00

We have all done these things. But we aren't .... Prime minister....

Maybe challenge travel companies to ensure prices don't treble at school holidays

Maybe look at removing tax for petrol

Maybe focus on National insurance

Oh no.... Let's deal with noise on trains... Oh and get stabbed when dealing with it .. and prisons are full

Nor all Andy's fault that prisons are full, but when you kick a cabinet out at least focus on the big things...

Maybe it isn't as cool as you thought

Wibble128 · 20/10/2026 18:00

The first responsibility of a Prime minister is defence of the realm. He is failing in that. All the rest of his actions that have been spun into the press for public consumption are nothing more than populist headline grabbers. Without enforcement for any of them there will be no benefit to the public or the UK in general.

Raiderofthelostbattenburg · 20/10/2026 18:01

SubstandardMotelsOnTheLa · 20/10/2026 17:57

Similar her. A litter picking group was started. People saw what a difference ut made and now there is a lot less litter. That grew into a couple more community projects that have helped more local people to get to know each other. It is really heartening.

I agree with all of this. I really do think dealing with seemingly low-level everyday civic frustrations can transform how people feel about their communities.

Are you saying you don't like Labour? Well knock me down with an angry Reform pensioner's crutch.

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 20/10/2026 18:02

It's the hundreds of little things that are going to transform things.

Better that than planning 40 new hospitals and actually building none.

People would have only criticised if Burnham had swept in spending billions on big projects. Then it'd be 'OK, he's going to rebuild the world but I still have to pay over the odds for my bus fare.'

XenaSharples · 20/10/2026 18:03

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 20/10/2026 17:57

But you only pay 40% on the proportion of your pay that qualifies.

That's how earning more over the years works.

I find it depressing that some people aren't capable of understanding this.

Yep. Let’s wait for the budget though and see what Dobbie comes up with.
A man of such principles surely has found the money for defense.

Greedybilly · 20/10/2026 17:45

I agree! Wtf did the Tories do for 14 years???
Made everything so much worse. Burnham is at least trying to sort out their left over crap.x

As we all know, Boris Johnson was the paragon of integrity, diligence, and serving the country: after all, we should expect no less, as he had the best education that money can buy.

And pigs can fly.

I’m still giving Burnham the benefit of the doubt. I find it refreshing to hear the prime minister talk about things that affect everyday people. Johnson would have said “people should have got better jobs, or been born into better families, then they wouldn’t notice the cost of parking fines; my secretary handles all those.”

And why isn’t the documentary about Reform headline news?

BluebellBeth · 20/10/2026 17:59

not everyone gets a pay rise every year

That’s largely down to private companies making that choice though.

histrainersbythedoor · 20/10/2026 18:07

I strongly suspect that burnham’s budget could include a cut to taxes to 5%, tripling the minimum wage, infinite funding for defence and the NHS, and people would still be angry.

A disproportionately large number of people seem to hate them, that’s for sure

I work in elective surgery in the NHS. We are now booking surgeries around 40 weeks wait, rather than the 60+ it was last year. It’s not perfect, but it’s a good step in the right direction.

im affected by the higher rate atm
and my wage isn’t even high it’s just gone up over the years to where I’m now at 40% for just being a normal worker
that pisses me off

When did Burnham lower the threshold for higher rate tax?

mybiggreenfrog · 20/10/2026 18:09

Is he going to tackle the PIP problem. A friend walks 15km a day abd has a mobility car. It's a joke.

StarDolphins · 20/10/2026 18:10

I’m not a bot and I’m DELIGHTED he’s capped bus fares at £2 and is making airlines not charge £8.99 for kids sitting together. He’s hot on it🔥

It really doesn’t matter right now that we’re adding millions to national debt each month, and unemployment is up. We can get on the bus cheaper though🥳

Yes, I've just received an appointment for a non urgent ultrasound less than three week from my first attempt to contact GP. Two years ago I'd still be waiting for my GP appointment.
