To be sick of people being so negative about the things Burnham is putting into place

Nobody thinks they’ll fix everything but he’s doing small things that can be actioned quickly and will drastically improve aspects of our lives that have got worse over the last two decades - parking fines, music on trains, vaping on public transport. They’re all small things, yes, but they will make things a little better.

He’s not said anywhere that he thinks that doing these things will save Britain. So why are people acting like he has said that?

That’s largely down to private companies making that choice though.

They are probably making that choice because that is all they can afford.

Yes, I've just received an appointment for a non urgent ultrasound less than three week from my first attempt to contact GP. Two years ago I'd still be waiting for my GP appointment.

It’s these little things that take a huge amount of work that people don’t see. We’ve doubled elective operating capacity at my hospital. It’s doubled our workload for a 0% pay increase, but people like to act like it’s nothing.

No, they could easily afford pay rises. They just preserve shareholder profits instead.

Well does he have any actual ideas or just small mini changes?

Small changes add up to a big change, though.

But as always, people who know nothing about politics or economics think they could do better!

When did Burnham lower the threshold for higher rate tax?

He didn't but keeping it the same is equivalent to raising it when someone gets s pay rise ... let's see what he does in the budget. Put the amount above tax threshold into your pension ... no brainer really.

Walkerzoo · 20/10/2026 18:12

OP. You seem to know what is in the budget...

So once again Andy. If jobs are improving that isn't your work. At that time you and your cabinet had the knives out. And the boats... You said you could do better... Weather has turned bad and let's face when volunteers are getting a harder deal than you then ...you need to look at yourself

And when you are annoyed at kids on tik tok on train make sure you are wearing a stab vest before you speak to the guard or police. Oops. There aren't many are there.

Honestly. No that the others are fab but when politicians start a thread to promote themselves as marketing you know it is a bit dire.

whatanuglythingtosay · 20/10/2026 18:12

It's politics. He's a big boy, old enough to know that negativity comes with the job. If people aren't happy with what he's doing, they should feel free to complain and be as 'negative' about his choices as they like.

histrainersbythedoor · 20/10/2026 18:13

Also @StarDolphinsthat £2 a journey is £2 extra a day in my pocket. £10 a week or £40 a month. £480 a year. It’s not earth shattering but it’s a bloody good deal.

I’m not a bot and I’m DELIGHTED he’s capped bus fares at £2 and is making airlines not charge £8.99 for kids sitting together. He’s hot on it🔥

It really doesn’t matter right now that we’re adding millions to national debt each month, and unemployment is up. We can get on the bus cheaper though🥳

Well it helps people who use these services.

The first responsibility of a Prime minister is defence of the realm. He is failing in that. All the rest of his actions that have been spun into the press for public consumption are nothing more than populist headline grabbers. Without enforcement for any of them there will be no benefit to the public or the UK in general.

You’d support tax rises to increase defence spending? Defence has been under funded for decades, across the whole of Europe. For Andy to return it to the level it should be at (according to some metrics) he would have to raise taxes, or cut spending significantly. Perhaps he should cut pensions to pay for it?

Oh God, I’ve forgotten it was the budget

I think using the example of Music on public transport it’s because he promises what he can’t deliver
There’s not going to be any extra staff to enforce it so why bother saying it

I think there was something else similar that he promised but has no backup, but I can’t remember what it was

I agree that stopping these things is part of making daily life better but is he actually doing it?

it’s a bit like promising to end homelessness no one can do that so what is the point of saying it?

SubstandardMotelsOnTheLa · 20/10/2026 17:57

Similar her. A litter picking group was started. People saw what a difference ut made and now there is a lot less litter. That grew into a couple more community projects that have helped more local people to get to know each other. It is really heartening.

I love that its not a one off. I honestly wished I had started sooner rather than sitting about bitching and moaning about the state of the estate. Be the change you want to see definitely applies here.

Ah, one of these!

He is very clearly multitasking - there is a budget coming next week. Very clearly a lot of these things will be addressed then. But doing things that benefit everyday people will help.

I get public transport everyday. All it will take is one or two of the kids that sit and watch TikTok on their phones to get a fine before they stop. Same with the trains. Are you really of the belief that if something doesn’t benefit you directly, it shouldn’t be done?

All it will take is one or two of the kids that sit and watch TikTok on their phones to get a fine before they stop.

You don't sound like you use public transport everyday or know any "kids".

It is a good deal, yes. But it’s trying to decorate when the house is falling down.

Hummingbird233 · 20/10/2026 18:16

You can’t please some people. They have a motive and nothing is good enough unless it’s who they want in power.

It’s tiring and transparent. I literally roll my eyes at the “sinking titanic” comments - they’re muppets.

So, he didn’t raise taxes, which is what is alleged.

I will be very interested to see just how many of those kids who watch and post on TikTok will pay up on the fines that they are issued with

Jeremy Vine tried to make the noise on public transport issue all about kids yesterday, and every single story where people had an example to give was about middle aged men. It was amusing the way he tried to stick to the young people line.

The economy is more resilient than expected, so what house is falling down?

Sartre · 20/10/2026 18:19

DH and I basically came to the conclusion that British people just love to moan and are never ever satisfied. Ironically, many reform voters are on benefits and I think if Reform get in they will lose their money. I kind of hope it happens for that reason alone, give them something to really moan about.
