To be sick of people being so negative about the things Burnham is putting into place

Nobody thinks they’ll fix everything but he’s doing small things that can be actioned quickly and will drastically improve aspects of our lives that have got worse over the last two decades - parking fines, music on trains, vaping on public transport. They’re all small things, yes, but they will make things a little better.

He’s not said anywhere that he thinks that doing these things will save Britain. So why are people acting like he has said that?

im affected by the higher rate atm
and my wage isn’t even high it’s just gone up over the years to where I’m now at 40% for just being a normal worker
that pisses me off

The 40% tax rate was originally introduced by the Tories. Who also froze the thresholds from 2022.

Just like you were in June 2024.

I didn’t earn 50 in June 2024

Burnham hasn’t actually had a budget yet. He’s been in the job less than three months.

Unemployment is down, NMW is going up, small boat crossings have fallen. What else do you want from him?!

NMW going up isn't necessarily a good thing though.

  1. It pushes the cost of everything else up so no one is better off.
  2. Many employers can't afford it so they end up reducing current staff hours or not filling vacancies leaving people worse off.
  3. A lot of employers can't afford to keep the gap the same. So what happens is the minimum wage goes up but the person above who was previously earning £1 an hour to be a team lead/manager more now earns 50p per hour more, they now feel shortchanged and like all the extra effort isn't worth it.

My husband is having this issue now, his company have offered him a promotion about four times now. Its 2k extra a year for triple the workload, why would he bother?

I have a lot of sympathy with this point of view, and actually felt very similarly disillusioned with party politics as a whole until recently. But I have to say, Andy Burnham has felt like an absolute breathe of fresh air to me - partly because of his communication style, I like that he talks like an actual person, and not like he's been focus grouped to death but also because I do think he gets that politics only matters if people feel the benefits in their day to day lives. I really liked what he said about people not judging growth by a spreadsheet but by what they see on their High Streets - and, for me, that's the point of his proposals on education reform too, good PISA scores are all very well good but what does that matter if huge numbers of young people aren't properly equipped for the work place?

Like you, I'm waiting to see what the budget actually holds but I've got to say, for the first time in a long time, I'm actually hopeful about the positive impact a government could have. I guess that's why I find the relentless negativity from some quarters grinding - it just feels so cynical and defeatist.

I didn’t mind him at first

I just find it all very like, emperors new clothes at the moment

tho the way I’m being rounded on for daring to have an opinion says to me that he has really got his passionate followers

Because they can't fault the things, but it would kill them to acknowledge the PM has done anything positive. If he gave them the moon on a stick they'd complain there weren't any stars with it, what they really wanted was the sun, they didn't like the stick, and who was going to pay for it anyway.

Even then they’d probably get the wrong end of the stick! Thank you, I’ll be here all week!! 😉

I have found the way the poster’s responds to me as aggressive. I’m not crying about it or intimidated, I just find it weird. It doesn’t always need to be an accusation or argument. And I can interpret their comments in any way I want to.

No. Lots of us left wingers are still very sceptical of Burnham. We We are just stating facts.

I get a pay rise every year. I thought everyone did, even benefit claimants

it’s just that my standard pay rises have now put me in the higher rate bracket and it’s pissing me off

is that not ok? Am I not allowed to have that viewpoint?

HedgerowD · 20/10/2026 17:51

People just love to whinge. I think sometimes the little things make a big impact on people's lives. And even if it doesn't make a difference to you personally who cares as long as it isn't costing vast amounts of money.

Sometimes the little changes changes also cause a ripple. We started litter picking locally. Since then it does seem that more people are using the bins. And then a craft club for the kids and a book club has been started at the local library after a few of us got talking about trying to do more in the community.

I want to like him. But it feels like endless announcements about trivia and I am finding it irritating and patronising and distracting.

He may have good intentions but he needs a rethink about the optics of it all.

No! Certainly not above inflation for as long as I can remember!
I am liking what I am seeing so far, and as a PP said he has only been in the job 3 months.
Let’s see what the budget looks like, although I imagine the usual suspects will be miserable about it even if they cut tax! They cant seem to win.

i don’t think my payrises have been particularly large, they just placed me in a higher bracket

and I will not be someone who complains if there is more money in my pocket however I am doubtful that will happen

tho I will say my energy prices have not gone up by much yet but no idea how long that will be for

I don’t get this mindset though.

You will be better off despite being in a higher tax bracket.

Why is it that people despise paying taxes so much? They want all the benefits of living in a society without having to pay for it, it seems.

But you only pay 40% on the proportion of your pay that qualifies.

That's how earning more over the years works.

Similar her. A litter picking group was started. People saw what a difference ut made and now there is a lot less litter. That grew into a couple more community projects that have helped more local people to get to know each other. It is really heartening.

No not everyone does.
And many people get below inflation pay rises.
Meanwhile the cost of living goes up considerably and a lot of people feel they are going backwards.
