To be sick of people being so negative about the things Burnham is putting into place

Nobody thinks they’ll fix everything but he’s doing small things that can be actioned quickly and will drastically improve aspects of our lives that have got worse over the last two decades - parking fines, music on trains, vaping on public transport. They’re all small things, yes, but they will make things a little better.

He’s not said anywhere that he thinks that doing these things will save Britain. So why are people acting like he has said that?

There is nothing wrong with them per se, but they are so trivial. They play into the hands of people who said he was massively underweight for the job. They make him look like he’s still thinking like the mayor of a small city rather than the leader of a G7 and NATO nation.

i hope he will silence all his critics with a superb budget that genuinely stimulates growth and tackles welfare and public spending to invest in business growth and defence.

These small things help people directly and can be done without affecting the big things.

Redfluffyblanket · 20/10/2026 17:34

I don't like the way he came in, and I actually thought Starmer was doing a decent job, but needed more time for people to feel the effects. Burnham knows he won't get time if he doesn't do some popular things quickly.

It worried me that so far we haven't seen muvh substance, only little things that make him popular, we known he's good at making himself popular.

dontcookwontcook · 20/10/2026 17:28

Well does he have any actual ideas or just small mini changes?

What, like devolution, reindustrialisation, reform of social care, review of the education system and addressing the housing crisis? That sort of thing...?

dontcookwontcook · 20/10/2026 17:34

SubstandardMotelsOnTheLa · 20/10/2026 17:32

Wait for the budget?

Latest poll has Labour at 30%, so going in the right direction.

It’s the budget I am waiting for but I just suspect it’ll be more taxes for those of us who work and higher benefits for everyone else. I’m a bit tired of it all. Tho I was tired of tories too so it’s not that I’m anti labour, just thoroughly disappointed with all of them

and I don’t care about polls I can about my actual life

Well devolution seens pie in tne sky at the moment
social care reform needs consultations etc so that’s kicking the can down the road
the education system is fine from what I can see - we have good pisa scores why is he tweaking the one thing we appear to be ok at?

I agree with you, OP, but I do think alot of the negativity is online, not neccessarily from bots, but from people who have a very deeply entrenched dislike of any vaguely left wing politician. Because the fact is, despite the online negativity, in the real world he's consistently polling way ahead of any other political leader in terms of personal popularity, so he must be doing something people like.

I also find it interesting, because the idea that fixing the small irritations and behaviours make people's day to day lives difficult or frustrating, and through those small improvements, improving how people feel about society as a whole is hardl new. David Cameron was famously very big on this kind of policy making, and I don't remember anyone calling him parorchial. Which makes it quite hard not to read a bit of classism and anti-Northern bias into some of the attack lines being levelled at the Prime Minister.

And a deeply entrenched dislike of vaguely left wing people in general. The hatred is very strong.

There’s a real feeling that the personal allowance will be raised. That would be a huge benefit for a lot of people.

Seriously Andy.

Look at high streets, look at the weekly shop....

But Andy or maybe his wife as she works in marketing.

Go back to the day job. If you really need to put this on Mumsnet you will never get started on the big stuff.

Let's face it. You and some of your cabinet used knives to get the jobs. Put it to an election if you are so confident

Proper devolution is massive potentially for day to day living. It could affect anyone public health, all public services, community work, social care, education, training, transport, etc etc

Which tax increases have affected you so far?

im affected by the higher rate atm
and my wage isn’t even high it’s just gone up over the years to where I’m now at 40% for just being a normal worker
that pisses me off

You want to spend money on an unnecessary election and more uncertainty?

SubstandardMotelsOnTheLa · 20/10/2026 17:37

Which tax increases have affected you so far?

Excellent question. We have constant reporting from the press, which is almost all right wing, about possible tax increases, which people take as actual news, when most never happened. So which tax increases exactly?

Well he can't wave a magic wand and reform social care, can he? Of course it needs consultation. The thing is, he hadn't kicked the can down the road like his predecessors. He's started the (inevitably lengthy) process.
The education system isn't fine. It's failing huge numbers of young people who's skills don't lean to the academic by its failure to offer technical and practical alternatives.

Are you suggesting OP is Andy Burnham?

Jaxinabox · 20/10/2026 17:42

I’d love to feel positive about him. Just haven’t witnessed anything to be positive about yet. Telling people to wear headphones wasn’t one of the things that really worried me about the future of the UK. That said, I’m prepared to wait and see what the budget reveals.

Holeymoley28 · 20/10/2026 17:43

We can’t even get parking wardens out for clear violations. Kids are not going to be getting fined for loud music or TikTok’s on busses let’s be real.

His put petrol prices on google, Why there was already a million websites and apps for it. But no no we needed government legislation for it 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️

NotAnotherScarf · 20/10/2026 17:44

The phrase "bread and circuses" comes to mind. Tiny, unimportant things that actually do nothing to deal with the major issues.

I'm no socialist... definitely not, but I expected bold moves from Burnham:
Windfall tax on the petrol companies
Tighter control of the profits made by the energy companies
Re nationalisation of the steel industry
A minister for drought and long term planning

Instead.... don't play loud music on the bus...

I have a lot of sympathy with this point of view, and actually felt very similarly disillusioned with party politics as a whole until recently. But I have to say, Andy Burnham has felt like an absolute breathe of fresh air to me - partly because of his communication style, I like that he talks like an actual person, and not like he's been focus grouped to death but also because I do think he gets that politics only matters if people feel the benefits in their day to day lives. I really liked what he said about people not judging growth by a spreadsheet but by what they see on their High Streets - and, for me, that's the point of his proposals on education reform too, good PISA scores are all very well good but what does that matter if huge numbers of young people aren't properly equipped for the work place?

Like you, I'm waiting to see what the budget actually holds but I've got to say, for the first time in a long time, I'm actually hopeful about the positive impact a government could have. I guess that's why I find the relentless negativity from some quarters grinding - it just feels so cynical and defeatist.

The stagnation in the personal allowance wasn't started by Labour. What's new?

Right so you use social care reform as a rod to beat me with and when I respond that he hasn’t actually done anything (and likely won’t before the end of the his term) then, that’s ok too?

Made everything so much worse. Burnham is at least trying to sort out their left over crap.x
