To be sick of people being so negative about the things Burnham is putting into place

Nobody thinks they’ll fix everything but he’s doing small things that can be actioned quickly and will drastically improve aspects of our lives that have got worse over the last two decades - parking fines, music on trains, vaping on public transport. They’re all small things, yes, but they will make things a little better.

He’s not said anywhere that he thinks that doing these things will save Britain. So why are people acting like he has said that?

Oh God, I’ve forgotten it was the budget

I think using the example of Music on public transport it’s because he promises what he can’t deliver
There’s not going to be any extra staff to enforce it so why bother saying it

I think there was something else similar that he promised but has no backup, but I can’t remember what it was

I agree that stopping these things is part of making daily life better but is he actually doing it?

it’s a bit like promising to end homelessness no one can do that so what is the point of saying it?

I think the transport police are to enforce rather than the train or bus staff. I’m not sure how it will work in practice but the theory is good.

Well it helps people who use these services.

The £2 might help but the airlines forced to stop the £8.99 sitting together will mean it’s just hidden in the overall price. There’s 100+ more important things for him to be getting done instead of concentrating on teeny things.

Eviebeans · 20/10/2026 18:20

I have been trying to think of something- just one thing- that will make a big enough difference to feel like real progress
The trouble is that there is so much to do and they all feel urgent

I’m not a bot and I’m DELIGHTED he’s capped bus fares at £2 and is making airlines not charge £8.99 for kids sitting together. He’s hot on it🔥

It really doesn’t matter right now that we’re adding millions to national debt each month, and unemployment is up. We can get on the bus cheaper though🥳

It is so easy to be snobby and sneering about bus fares but for millions of ordinary working people, that is exactly the kind of thing that actually matters to their day to day life.

As for the rest, UK unemployment is actually down - it was in the news either yesterday or today that it has fallen to* *its lowest level in over a year. And we all know the debt is a problem, but in Bangkok last week the IMF literally singled out the UK to praise its deficit reduction plans.

Of course you can dislike the direction of travel of the government, but at least base your dislike on facts. The constant doom mongering about the country just gets so tiresome: and I actually think that's why Andy Burnham's hope messaging is cutting through.

Flying isn’t an essential like transport to and from work is?

The small things he mentioned benefit everyone, and does not negatively affect others.

Quite. However, the things he’s NOT dealing with, do negatively affect others.

AbouttimeIhadanewusername · 20/10/2026 18:22

Hospital waiting lists came down under Starmer but have just gone up for the 4th month in a row. 🤔

I love that its not a one off. I honestly wished I had started sooner rather than sitting about bitching and moaning about the state of the estate. Be the change you want to see definitely applies here.

I totally agree.

Holeymoley28 · 20/10/2026 18:26

I do like the bus fee cap. But that’s just continuation. Also it’s still not always the best option.

For me to bus to my dentist not nhs can’t get one. There and back would involve four busses that’s £8 at the £2 cap. Add my children because we all go together another £12 on their £1 tickets. £20. I can get a taxi for that there and back and not waste half my day on the bus. Or I can get day rider and ride all day long for less than my £8 or a family ticket for five of us for £15 and ride all day.

£2 tickets only help the occasional bus trips not those who need to catch more than one bus really. So I guess I like it but also in another breath it feels pointless 🤷🏻‍♀️ swings and roundabouts.

Also @Walkerzoounemployment has fallen, as per the ONS today. So clearly something is going well!

Although the number of job vacancies has fallen to below 700 000 for the first time since Covid because of employers NI, business rates so that is not a good thing.

i do agree that tackling low level antisocial behaviour is very important and if these are ignored then things will escalate.

At the end of 2025 there were 7.29 million patients waiting for care. There’s now 7.37 million. However, they fell as backlogs were cleared and now people are being seen quicker in general - is that not a good thing?

I will be very interested to see just how many of those kids who watch and post on TikTok will pay up on the fines that they are issued with

I am sure that ones I have seen acting up on public transport will be falling over themselves to pay. Lets ask the train conductors how accommodating difficult passengers are...

Is he going to tackle the PIP problem. A friend walks 15km a day abd has a mobility car. It's a joke.

What I find rather fascinating is that people can know so much about a person apart from the name of the actual scheme they are supposedly abusing.

There is no such thing as a "mobility car". Although all cars provide mobility, I suppose.

There is nothing wrong with them per se, but they are so trivial. They play into the hands of people who said he was massively underweight for the job. They make him look like he’s still thinking like the mayor of a small city rather than the leader of a G7 and NATO nation.

i hope he will silence all his critics with a superb budget that genuinely stimulates growth and tackles welfare and public spending to invest in business growth and defence.

I’m the last person who will vote Labour, but why do you think the trivial things shouldn’t be done? The last governments have failed at the small and big things, so at least he’s making progress on the little things.

Now I don’t agree with all the trivial decisions he’s made, but I support that he’s doing something and what he thinks is right - and as it happens, it doesn’t matter a huge amount that I don’t agree… because they’re small things. Together they will add up to a better society though.

Timemouse · 20/10/2026 18:28

I care about the economy and defence because without those two things we are nothing. Kemi is doing very well and attracting back a lot of the boomer voters who were going to vote for Farage.i expect she’ll attract a lot of Labour Brexit lovers too.

Wintersonata · 20/10/2026 18:29

parking fines, music on trains, vaping on public transport.

I think banning loud music and vaping on public transport is an excellent idea, but who is going to stop it?
The guard or ticket collector or bus driver won’t want to risk being hurt.

hellesbells · 20/10/2026 18:31

Walkerzoo · 20/10/2026 17:18

Seriously?
I don't get a train, I don't park a car...and when I did get a train when you face abusive behaviour there is no train guards or police...

Might be a good initiative as a mayor.

As a prime minister no where near where the post holder should be.

Cost of living crisis, no agenda, no jobs as businesses can't afford workers... No training...

So Andy. Can you please read a book on ideas for what a prime minister should do and start doing them

its going take a long time to put right the Conservatives destruction of this country

He can hardly fix everything for all people all at once can he?
