To take myself off for lunch on my own today?

Its my Birthday, been up with DH for hours, had breakfast together, walked the dogs and he hasn't even said 'Happy Birthday'

Have two adult DD's, both that live a couple of hours away, neither of them have messaged me to say 'Happy Birthday' either. Both will be up and at work by now too.

Just makes me feel pretty shit as I always make sure its the first thing I do, or say, or message to my family when its theirs. I always make sure I make a bit of a fuss of them.

For no-one to even acknowledge by Birthday by 10.30am has just made me feel proper rubbish.

I am a good mum, and a good wife.

Shall I go out for lunch by myself or am I just being a bit of a baby and need to suck it up?

Its just another Birthday after all.

Take yourself out for a treat, and enjoy it. Your daughters may be busy with work until later, but your DH is being a bit shit to not even say happy birthday to you when you wake up.
I hope your day improves.

@D3vonmaid

no.

im sorry but no one is too busy with work or anything else to not have two minutes to send their mother a happy birthday text. Let’s not infantilise or excuse adults from common decency.

Hear hear.

what about one of those nice cinemas where you can get cocktails?

@ThereIsSomethingWrongWithTheLeftFilange
fuck those who have forgotten, or who couldn’t be bothered.

treat yourself!

Happy birthday op, enjoy a lovely lunch and don’t let the bastards get you down!

Zhx3 · Yesterday 12:36

Happy birthday to you, OP. I hope that you're having a delicious lunch and that you're feeling better now.

Remember you're as important as anyone else in your family 💐.

TrueCrimeFanatic · Yesterday 12:39

Must admit my DH never forgets but my adult kids do. It’s usually my step daughter who wishes me Happy Birthday in the family WhatsApp then the others chime in, but if she forgot I’m pretty sure the others wouldn’t remember. I just tell myself we’re all different and they’ve got more important things to think about (work, partners, kids) thats life I guess.

Laurmolonlabe · Yesterday 12:39

I'd go out to lunch, but I'd get on the Eurostar and late lunch in Paris- they can fend for themselves one day a year.

Happy Birthday, OP.

If you can handle a bit of a slightly critical - but intended constructively - opinion... is there a tiny whiff of burning martyr about this?

This - Its just another Birthday after all sounds like it's said with a gentle head tilt and sadly downcast eyes. Obviously, everyone reasonably expects acknowledgment of their birthday. It's hardly a wild expectation.

Has there been any chat about your plans? What you'd like to do? What other family member's plans are? Has there been a radio silence during the build-up just to see if anyone remembered without a single prompt? During the morning, the dog walk etc., if you didn't mention your birthday, it's seemingly become a 'test' to see if you've been forgotten, and if so, for how long? Why not just mention it?

I get it - It's easy to get into this mindset when you're used to be the person who organises nice things for everyone else. If your family HAVE forgotten, then it's pretty crap and I'd be really upset, but there would have be conversations and plans mentioned beforehand, many of them from me Grin

I hope you end up having a nice day, OP.

I mean not everyone reasonably expects acknowledgement of their birthday. I spend the day feeling sick hoping no one mentions mine for some reason. Thankfully DC generally forget and DH knows he should mention it as little as possible 😁

But this OP does. And if that's the way her family works usually then she should say something.

Op I hope you end up having the kind of day you want. 🌻

SplishSplash123 · Yesterday 12:48

Happy birthday OP! Hope you've headed out somewhere lovely by now.

That is disappointing behaviour by your family but its a poor reflection on them, not you.

That’s a FABULOUS idea!

I really hope this is because they have something special planned for you! Who wouldn't be affected by their own immediate family ignoring your birthday? Even I would sulk, and I hate sulking! It was my 60th birthday last month, my only son got me a small bottle of prosecco! A small bottle ffs! One glass of prosecco! And he's just had a massive inheritance from an aunt. At least it made my mind up about the incoming equity release!!

Lunch and a shopping trip to buy something for yourself.

CoolRubyDreamer · Yesterday 12:53

I think you just need to say to your husband have you forgotten it's my birthday. It's not going to make you feel better not addressing it you've still got a good chunk of the day left for your husband to rectify his mistake . And I wouldn't write your daughter's off yet they are at work and most likely just busy and will call you later. Hope you end up having a nice day and happy birthday 🎂 🎈

Tbh I would have reminded DP before the day!

Really? Three people who all hold down jobs who can’t put a date in a diary and send a text? Nope.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY @ThereIsSomethingWrongWithTheLeftFilange

Treat yourself to a lovely day of your choosing.

Chilly80 · Yesterday 12:59

Absolutely go out for lunch.

A very happy birthday from me.

CopeNorth · Yesterday 12:59

Happy Birthday! I’m sorry no one had said that to you. Treat yourself x

HighlandReflection · Yesterday 13:00

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear OP!
Go out for lunch and spoil yourself today. I hope your family have something lined up for you later.

Happy birthday from me, OP. Sorry nobody around you has said it yet.

What normally happens? Is this the first time everyone has seemingly forgotten?

Yep. Everyone seemingly has forgotten. Its now after 1pm and nothing!

And no, they are not planning a massive surprise or anything and doing that thing where they all pretend to forget. They have just forgotten. 😐

Absolutely take yourself out for lunch. Your husband and kids are being a bit shitty to all forget but I would never let that happen :D I would be saying hey it's as it's my birthday on X day/date can we do such a thing. Then they have no excuse. I am single so if I want to do stuff, I have to make it happen. Seems I have trained my son well (he is 20) and he and his gf spent the day with me this year. We went to a garden centre and then out for lunch (and they paid). I don't know who mentioned it first (probably me) but we tend to discuss what we are doing on special days a while in advance (and I do take them out for lunch quite often).

Oh gosh thats terrible! Please book a hotel and disappear for the night, take a friend with you!

Go out and treat yourself, if anyone asks tell them you’re off out by yourself as everyone has seemingly forgotten

I never understand how this happens.

We’d always have a conversation in the lead up to one of our birthdays, discussing how to celebrate, my DH would be in touch with the D.C. to see if they were free to visit, meet up at the weekend nearest etc.

I just don’t understand how this happens.

I know!

I Facetimed both my DD's over the weekend and both mentioned my upcoming Birthday and asked what we were doing.

DH mentioned something last weekend too so its not like they have completely forgotten, but just seem to have slipped their minds today.

Its weird.

They are not planning a surprise or anything so its just strange they all seem to have just forgotten to say Happy Birthday.

Happy birthday from me!

Definitely go out and treat yourself as much as you can, and next time it's hubby/kids' birthdays, don't bother doing anything for them; use whatever money you were going to spend on them and put it toward yourself.

Waytoohothot · Yesterday 13:12

They havnt forgotten they just cant be arsed, do you not have friends, i know what i would do id go out for the day get lunch then dinner see a show or book a spa or massage round up some friends and not get home till 11pm or later and if you have friends stay at their house the night...ignore both your kids birthdays when they next happen and your partners and ignore him when he messages, to be honest and i know others wont agree but if he can treat you like this why are you with him theres no point and people can only walk all over you if you let them

CoastalCalm · Yesterday 13:13

Go and get lunch and see if you can get booked in for some pampering - hair / nails / massage etc

Myblueclematis · Yesterday 13:15

It was my birthday yesterday, no husband/partner or kids, lots of messages and cards, a massive bunch of flowers from my brother and at lunchtime I went with two friends down to the beach hut I part share, bottle of Cremant and a box of fresh cream cakes to celebrate, it was so lovely, several passing people stopped and wished me happy birthday too.

To make the day even better, a seal popped up several times not too far offshore, looked to be eating a large fish. He's often spotted by other people but never by me before.

Happy birthday OP 💐
