To take myself off for lunch on my own today?

Its my Birthday, been up with DH for hours, had breakfast together, walked the dogs and he hasn't even said 'Happy Birthday'

Have two adult DD's, both that live a couple of hours away, neither of them have messaged me to say 'Happy Birthday' either. Both will be up and at work by now too.

Just makes me feel pretty shit as I always make sure its the first thing I do, or say, or message to my family when its theirs. I always make sure I make a bit of a fuss of them.

For no-one to even acknowledge by Birthday by 10.30am has just made me feel proper rubbish.

I am a good mum, and a good wife.

Shall I go out for lunch by myself or am I just being a bit of a baby and need to suck it up?

Its just another Birthday after all.

Is it possible they've got something planned as a surprise for later ?

cestlavielife · Yesterday 11:21

Did your dh literally forget? Did you mention it? Today or ystrday eg let s go out for lunch for my birthday?
But take your self off share a pic to family chat and say "happy birthday to me! Cheers!" Then book yourself into a nice hotel and relax

This is your family you are allowed to talk. A quick have you got something you would like to say to me would do it rather then getting upset over it.

Exactly this. Don’t be a martyr just say something to them. They need to know.

CloveRinse · Yesterday 11:25

Happy Birthday from me 💐

OneNewEagle · Yesterday 11:25

Happy birthday, yes go for lunch if it will help you feel better. If not and you are more like me buy a meal deal and eat in your car or a takeaway coffee. My birthday was forgotten this year, everyone ill, I got a party tea delivered, went out to the shops. I was really hurt and upset.

and OP but yourself a cake, I didn’t and I should have

No they dont it’s self explanatory. It’s OPs birthday shouldn’t have to explain the obvious.

Darck · Yesterday 11:27

Happy Birthday, OP.

If you can handle a bit of a slightly critical - but intended constructively - opinion... is there a tiny whiff of burning martyr about this?

This - Its just another Birthday after all sounds like it's said with a gentle head tilt and sadly downcast eyes. Obviously, everyone reasonably expects acknowledgment of their birthday. It's hardly a wild expectation.

Has there been any chat about your plans? What you'd like to do? What other family member's plans are? Has there been a radio silence during the build-up just to see if anyone remembered without a single prompt? During the morning, the dog walk etc., if you didn't mention your birthday, it's seemingly become a 'test' to see if you've been forgotten, and if so, for how long? Why not just mention it?

I get it - It's easy to get into this mindset when you're used to be the person who organises nice things for everyone else. If your family HAVE forgotten, then it's pretty crap and I'd be really upset, but there would have be conversations and plans mentioned beforehand, many of them from me Grin

I hope you end up having a nice day, OP.

Happy birthday!!

What utter bastards!

Definitely go for lunch, and maybe cinema afterwards.

My birthday was mentioned beforehand. I still got nothing this year, not even a card.

I know. I’m still hurt tbh five months later.

Is there a pattern of them forgetting you and taking you for granted? @ThereIsSomethingWrongWithTheLeftFilange

I tend to remind my family about my birthday, my DDs and DH appreciate a steer on what I would like as a gift.

msmillicentcat · Yesterday 11:32

Happy birthday! 🍰🎁
Yes they are being totally shit and I would tell them so.

JenRummy · Yesterday 11:34

Happy Birthday 🎈 OP. You have every right to feel a bit upset. Especially when you make sure they never get to feel unloved or uncared for. Fxxk them. It’s not the same as an afterthought or late. Get yourself out for lunch and buy yourself something wonderful. If they mention later too don’t sugar coat it. Say yes I felt really rubbish when no one bothered. It’s for them to sit with those feelings not you.

Devonlurker · Yesterday 11:35

It’s my birthday today too OP and I wish you a very happy shared birthday 🎂💐

Yup and switch off your phone. 📞 Make it a you day.

Happy Birthday!
Definitely go and pamper yourself today and make a big thing of it - expect more and if they dont reciprocate make it clear you are disappointed with their lack of thought.

Easy to forget. Why don't you mention it to DH, and go out together?

Septembersaturday · Yesterday 11:39

Yes. Definitely take yourself for a nice day out and enjoy yourself. I always try to do something nice for myself on my birthday.

Do they have a lot going on? DH was once working away on his birthday and we celebrated with cake and presents the evening before. He left at 5am on his birthday while I was still asleep. Despite us having celebrated the night before, I woke up that morning in such a rush that I forgot it was his birthday and he had to remind me.

Yes, if they apologise and get their actions together that's one thing, but if not, then think carefully about how much time, effort and money you put into celebrating your family's birthdays in future. Make a good day for yourself OP 🎂
