DH flipped at me and said I was accusing him of cheating… I wasn’t! Was I unreasonable to ask?

DH has always been very friendly and gregarious. This has led to problems in the past where female friends have messaged me telling me he was being flirty. I don’t mind flirting to be honest, it’s part of his personality.

2 years ago he was back in contact with an old friend. Messages were overly friendly and there was talks of meet ups. They never did. It caused issues in our marriage and he acknowledged he had taken it too far.

Tonight we were driving to the cinema. He told me to use hands free on his phone to call the couple (the male) we were meeting up with. Clicked on it, and a woman’s name I vaguely recognised was in recent contacts. I said, word for word, “oh did you manage to request a change of supervisor to woman’s name?”. He said he’d called her because she had some “gossip” about work. He briefly told me about this gossip. He was quiet after this and just cagey. He said the phone call was only 30 minutes. I said ok. After the cinema he said to me “do you think I’m cheating?”. I said no, I was asking about a phone call, I wasn’t accusing you, I thought it was related to work and just asked. He got annoyed asking if my insecurities were playing up. I said I wasn’t vaguely interested in why he called her, he works with her. He then said “so you think she wants me then? Is that it?”

what in the world just happened?! Am I being unreasonable asking about the phone call, or is his response very odd?

Also OP, sorry but women don’t text other women just because of flirting. I think he must have said something “over the line” for these women to message you and they have tried to be polite by saying “flirty”.

True.

Shadesofscarlett · 16/10/2026 09:22

how is he is just flirty an excuse for his cheating behaviour - like he cannot help it. why do women accept this. I agree with everyone else - when several people mention his inappropriate behaviour then you need to listen. And worry about all those who have not messaged.

Branleuse · 16/10/2026 09:22

I'd tell him that actually no, I wasn't accusing him of anything, and to have him now accusing you of accusing him and him being actually annoyed with YOU because he thinks you accused him, is bonkers.
That you actually overlook a hell of a lot of flirty and disrespectful behaviour and always have, and actually you are pretty pissed off that he's acting shifty and starting arguments as if you have no right to ask him questions.
You've given him a lot of grace over the years and you've had multiple people tell you that he flirted with them but you have always actually trusted him. That if you did actually worry about him and his communication or relationship with another woman that you expect that you could actually address it with him without him turning it back onto you like that anyway.

He's got a fucking nerve tbh.
I'd be extremely suspicious at his reaction, and it's very telling that you aren't even allowed to hint that you might be suspicious.

LogicVoid · 16/10/2026 09:23

He's attempting damage limitation by counter attacking - guilty conscience - his thoughts have strayed if nothing else.

OrlandointheWilderness · 16/10/2026 09:27

Well at the very least he is incredibly disrespectful to you, and I’m afraid I wouldn’t trust him at all!

What’s stuck out to me, after this conversation, I did some snooping… he told me in passing a few months ago this lady was in her 40s. I’ve just seen she’s 26? We’re 30s. Why the lie?

You know exactly why.

Your question wasn’t suspicious at all, but his reaction was. And trying to twist it as “your insecurities” was a villain move, honestly.

Do some further digging.

Voltorb · 15/10/2026 21:51

The phrase he doth protest too much springs to mind here.

He responded to a simple question as though you thought he was up to something which shows he is most likely up to something.

Hundred per cent agree.
Unless he's always touchy and/or you have a history of you baselessly accusing him of things, which I suspect you don't.

Oh dear, his reaction plus this doesn’t look good.

Happyjoe · 16/10/2026 09:37

For some attack is a form of defence.

HammockFace · 16/10/2026 09:38

How is the rest of your marriage? Does it meet your needs or is he a twat all the time but this time he was more of a twat?

You can leave for any reason or no reason. You don't have to have this shite in your life if you don't want to.

Lucyslateagain · 16/10/2026 09:44

That's not normal in a marriage
You don't lie about someone's age your friends with ,unless there is a reason your spouse wouldn't like the friendship
You don't as a 40 year old married man ring a 26 year old work colleague for half an hour about work gossip ..and you don't get all defensive unless there is something to be defensive about ..
So I expect he has a bit of a crush on her ..fancies her ..
Weather it's reciprocated remains to be seen .

FckThisShit · 16/10/2026 09:45

He's cheating on you op. He jumped down your throat about it and blamed your 'insecurities' to gaslight you and make you doubt yourself before you've even reached this conclusion yourself. He's a sly, manipulative scumbag.

rwalker · 16/10/2026 09:47

It’s a no win situation because personally I’d be pissed of being questioned but I guess the make me look guilty even though I’ve done nothing wrong

WitchesCatWhisker · 15/10/2026 21:54

The thing that jumps out to me OP is that women, plural, have contacted you to say he’s been flirty? What is that all about?

This. how many red flags are you going to ignore?

Seajaye · 16/10/2026 10:18

I agree it appears a defensive reaction and doesn't look great but I do think you need to monitor the situation carefully.. Asking about the phone call was ok as it was discovered in normal course of events but unfounded accusations of infidelity may course more tension which in itself can still be damaging even if there has been no sexual affair.

I think it depends on whether you would wish to end the marriage or if you would wish tackle his need for attention from other women in a different way.

. I have an overtly flirty male friend, quite camp, who greets all his female friends with two pecks on the cheek, french style and his wife is fully aware that's always been part of his nature. He has sometimes not picked reactions that I dictate some of his friends don't like the greeting style , and in fact I told that once. I think he'd run a mile if anyone pursued him though.

So he might just enjoy the attention if it makes him feel he's still attractive to other women and and in a bit of a mid life crisis.

Take care. You may not be into couples counselling but it can be helpful.if both parties engage with the idea of a facilitated open discussion and are in listening and explanation mode and not out just to accuse/ justify/defend their behaviour .

Glimerz · 16/10/2026 10:25

My guess is he is a cheat op up to now he has got away with being a flirt. There is more to this op. I would be investigating/walking. He has lied to cover his tracks.

Exactly, and OP brushing it off as being part of his character is deeply blinkered. No friend sends that text because the DH is a fun harmless flirt. He's a creep. That's his character. And now she knows he's a manipulator and a liar too.

myheadsjustmush · 16/10/2026 10:27

Your DH's reaction is certainly OTT for a perfectly normal question being asked of him.

I think he is up to a lot more than he is admitting to.

Years ago, an ex of mine was very friendly with a female colleague. He used to say she was after him, but he wasn't interested. I asked him a perfectly civil question about her one day (can't remember for the life of me what is was) - but he literally exploded at me, accusing me of being delusional and needing to sort out my head.

Not long after his little outburst, they were both rumbled - they had been having a full blown affair for years.

I walked and ever looked back.

Brokentoes85 · 16/10/2026 10:31

Red flags all around I'm afraid.

Flirting is disrespectful, he got lucky that you're OK with it. What happens when women respond?

He jumped to the defensive when faced with a v simple question.

Half an hour is a long time for a work colleague.

I'm a great believer in trusting your gut, mines never been wrong.

Keep an eye on him.

LadyLapsang · 16/10/2026 11:11

Just another good reason to have a separate work phone. His work calls should comply with workplace regulations and be confidential. Work phone for work, personal phone for personal calls.

AndyouWILLATONE · 16/10/2026 11:19

Mate there are a billion red flags here. I would bet all my worldly goods he has cheated on you but even if I'm wrong you shouldn't be in this relationship anyway. A man who flirts whilst in a relationship is a man who has zero respect for his partner. That is enough to end the relationship in my eyes. Have some self respect.

Justtobeclear · 16/10/2026 11:35

Oh i’ve had this and he was cheating. I’d let the boundary pushing go so many times because he was “just a really nice guy” and “I took it the wrong way.” I was of course controlling and stopping him from having friends etc. it was actually just because his AP was the first one to go along with it and the others had rejected him that the affair started. What I know now is it was my own self esteem that stopped me from realising the truth and not leaving when I thought I should. This won’t get better - you will continue to be gaslit and it will drive you slightly crazy.

PumpkinBumpkinx · 16/10/2026 12:15

Basically after the messages to the “old friend” he completely fell to pieces. Said he was extremely upset that he’d ruined my trust, that it would take years to rebuild, that it meant nothing. He said quite clearly that he would not have any female friends, there was no need for them. I’m not stupid and understand colleagues can be friends.

He may feel like the question was getting at something. Maybe it unconsciously was. He’s doubled down and been quite vile this morning

  • telling me to sort my head out
  • asking if he needs permission to speak to women in the future
  • telling me that I’m jealous of a work phone call
  • telling me he can’t believe I’m letting this come between us
  • telling me he will quit work and solely work with men
  • telling me “see you fucking later, fuck this”

He has cheated. No innocent person reacts this way.

mcmuffin22 · 16/10/2026 12:22

I would suggest that you don't have 'insecurities'... you have a partner who lacks boundaries, has a wandering eye and is desperate for female attention.
