To comment on every single “Die de Muertos” pub party that’s its cultural appropriation?

I’ve seen so many parties popping up around my county that are using AI slop to advertise their “Day of the Death” parties when a) nobody who’s Mexican has been consulted b) the food has nothing to do with Mexican food c) it’s a solemn family occasion - not a fiesta! And no, we don’t do face painting.

Every single time I see one, my eye twitches! I’m sure if a random persons (that had nothing to do with Hinduism) decided to throw a “Diwali party” people wouldn’t stay quiet.

Sorry it’s been one of those days and needed a rant!

I'm normally very anti the idea thst cultural appropriation exists, generally I think it's an excuse to feel offended and virtue signal, but actually I agree with OP to a degree.
We've been going to Mexico for over 20 years and absolutely love it, we started celebrating day of the dead after our first visit which coincided with it, and also went on a trip to some phenomenal "graveyards" which fascinated me as to the level of love and joy around remembering souls passed. It actually really helped my children when my grandfather passed and allowed us to be more "positive" about the grieving process somehow (I will admit the film Coco helped!). I think the reason I struggle is that it's a celebration to honour loved ones passed, and these parties do not honour or respect the intention at all. It feels a bit gross to be honest, we wouldn't like it if Mexicans suddenly started throwing parties based on our mourning processes. If the parties and pub crawls do have an element of this involved then fine but I haven't seen any that do.

God, a lot of dickheads on this thread. YANBU OP, and in my experience a many people in the UK seem to be deliberately obtuse about cultural appropriation.

I blame that Disney film.

If we don't adopt the best of other cultures how are we to integrate as a society? Very simply, we won't. If we don't embrace our differences and celebrate our similarities then we will remain distinct entities with racial and social divisions. This breeds hatred.

We should celebrate the Day of the Dead, Holi, Diwali, St Patrick's day, Christmas, Ascension, Easter, Yom Kippur, Feast of Eid, etc etc so we can become a more integrated, caring and knowledgeable society, together.

Maybe people do go to the pub and have a party but have you ever been to a wake? The family and friends of the deceased get together, have a bit of a party and say goodbye to their loved ones. So what's wrong with having a party to remember them? It may not be in Mexican style but we all adopt and bastardize traditions to suit our own personal cultures and have done so for millennia.

I give you Christmas, which just happens to conveniently fall at that same time as the ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia and it borrows an awful lot of traditions from it ... cultural appropriation on a massive scale there!

The concept of cultural appropriation is a pathetic seppos idea. Well you've been americanised then haven't you, please , don't bring that backward mentality here. We like to celebrate other cultures. If you don't like it feel free to just ignore it. Or how about joining in, you never know, you might have fun.

Have fun? Hell no, they just want everyone else to be as miserable and stingy as they are 😉

This comes up every so often. Can someone remind me who I need to speak to if I want to splash a bit of Worcestershire sauce on a cheese toastie? I have no connection at all to Worcestershire and don't want to offend anyone by appropriating this excellent condiment. Do I need to get permission every time I'm hankering after a tangy cheesy sarnie or can someone give me blanket absolution?

In case it's helpful to anyone, I hereby give permission to non-Irish folks to drink Guinness and to nod along to the main instrumental from Riverdance. Also to celebrate St Patrick's Day. This is a joke, obviously. Just like the concept of cultural appropriation.

Get a life, OP.

Oh fgs not this nonsense again

Wait til you hear about this thing called St Patrick's Day. Your head is going to fall off.

That’s because it’s a made up thing for the perpetually offended to get worked up about.

Humans have always borrowed from other cultures, we are complete magpies like that. Cultural practices evolve, grow, become amalgamated with other traditions.

DorsetKnobBiscuit · Yesterday 22:00

This is interesting.

"Mexican academics are divided on whether the festivity has genuine indigenous pre-Hispanic roots or whether it is a 20th-century rebranded version of a Spanish tradition developed during the presidency of Lazaro Cardenas to encourage Mexican nationalism through an "Aztec" identity"

That’s ok as he’s sharing his culture. I’ve done at my daughter’s school. But it very different all of these pubs organising parties for profit.

Bit hypocritical of you to come here and complain about our culture isn't it. Why would you be so arsey about people celebrating another culture? Give your head a wobble.

Sashimiandhisthunderpaws · Yesterday 22:01

@Stayinganontoday I understand what you’re getting at although I don’t think framing it as cultural appropriation goes down well. Unfortunately the UK is a consumerist society that likes to commercialise anything it can.

All the posters comparing it to Christmas being celebrated by non-Christians in the UK are haven’t really understood the root of OP’s annoyance. It’s a day of remembrance and it would be like Egypt running remembrance raves on Remembrance Sunday and selling WW1 uniform costumes for the parties. I would imagine posters would see that differently.

Nah you'll be fine. Most Yorkshire folk are not up their own arses 🤣🤣

rolloverbeethoven · Yesterday 22:05

My jaw actually dropped when you objected to the "cultural appropriation" and then called the rest of us gringos OP 😂. How about we all just celebrate everything and stop being so bloody precious?

Except that ‘remembrance raves’ are not something that anyone does in the uk, so how would that be comparable?

Given your point about Egypt this costume for sale in a Cairo fancy dress shop is going to really annoy the OP.

Is it silly? Unnecessary? A bit tacky, even? Maybe. Probably.

But realistically, what harm is it doing? Is it the fiesta elements that bother you? The fact they’ll be giving no fucks about their dead loved ones?

I believe so. You don't want to risk offending someone. Maybe have a traditional pottage instead.

Do you know if it's ok to attend a doctor if you don't have any Greek heritage?

Halloween is absolutely not a party thing, it is an ancient deeply held belief where the veil of our ancestors becomes thin and they can travel amongst the living.

It is a very powerful time of year, where we celebrate our ancestors, protect our houses and livestock and let the things which no longer serve us go.

She's been americanised, she's even using yank concepts like cultural appropriation. The way the USA has bastardised halloween and the way their trashing it has unfortunately caught on here is what OP is describing.

Celtic1hair · Yesterday 22:17

TheKeatingFive · Yesterday 22:09

Because in Mexico the celebration is based around remembering their dead loved ones, it's honouring them. Just using the day as a piss up with no regards to the sentiment just seems to trivialise it. I agree cultural appropriation isn't the right term (of it ever is) but I think the above poster did make a valid comparison.

Please tell me this and actual society and how I can join!

Just like all the St Patrick's Day (St Patty's Day 🤢) nonsense that we have in Canada. I have tried saying that for Catholics it's quite a solemn day but nobody cares.
