To comment on every single “Die de Muertos” pub party that’s its cultural appropriation?

I’ve seen so many parties popping up around my county that are using AI slop to advertise their “Day of the Death” parties when a) nobody who’s Mexican has been consulted b) the food has nothing to do with Mexican food c) it’s a solemn family occasion - not a fiesta! And no, we don’t do face painting.

Every single time I see one, my eye twitches! I’m sure if a random persons (that had nothing to do with Hinduism) decided to throw a “Diwali party” people wouldn’t stay quiet.

Sorry it’s been one of those days and needed a rant!

Maybe these pub parties are being organised as a way of showing endearment and not as an insult.

They would know that serving burritos and chilli con carne is definitely an insult!

I hope you are doing a thorough investigation first whether there are any Mexicans organising and/ or attending first.

This is such bullshit and you clearly need to get a life.

Halloween is absolutely not a party thing, it is an ancient deeply held belief where the veil of our ancestors becomes thin and they can travel amongst the living.

It is a very powerful time of year, where we celebrate our ancestors, protect our houses and livestock and let the things which no longer serve us go.

Omg exactly, have you not also heard of “all souls day “ in Ireland . It’s the Christian conversion or equivalent of Halloween or in Irish Samhain or Oiche Samhain. It’s very significant in Irish culture and not just a “party” . That’s offensive op 😂

Anybody remember Grimfandango? Brilliant day-of-the-dead PC game from the early 90s? This thread reminded me of it.

That didn’t use to exist. It was only created after the Bond film (Spectre). The next year some tourists arrived and asked about the parade (which obviously did t exist). So the Mexico City government started organising it as it was a way of bringing tourism and $$$$

So they appropriated it from the film in order to profit financially?

I can’t decide if you’re on a wind up or not. How on earth is that insulting!? Jesus Christ you’re reaching here 🥲 what if the only part of Mexico we’re really interested in is chilli and El Paso kits? What a to do about nothing. I can’t imagine having any feeling at all if at a St David’s day do there are people eating Yorkshire puddings. (Edited - St George, even. Shows how bothered I’d be. Let people celebrate culture OP).

Loub1987 · Yesterday 21:16

So no one should ever enjoy or do something that isn’t from their own birth nation / culture? I’m thinking no person celebrating Christmas that isn’t Christian. No non Irish person celebrating St Patrick’s day. No chocolate eggs at Easter for anyone! No one enjoying fireworks on guy Fawkes night (not even sure it’s the right spelling, it’s not my culture. But I do like the bonfire and baked potatoes).

Stop being the joy police. Actually I genuinely wish I had the amount of free time to be able to care about such things. Must be nice.

Somethinggg · Yesterday 21:16

It's just inherently difficult to make a cultural appropriation argument about a clearly syncretistic festival, being celebrated in a culture that also has a festival around Allhallowstide frequenrly involving similar customs, that was tacked onto an existing festival. That quite by coincidence happens to be held on the existing festival of All Souls Day rather than any of the other days around the season.

Not that you've helped yourself OP by leaving out the very well known fact that actually it isn't necessarily celebrated as a solemn festival at all. Or by the generalisation around Halloween!

Maybe the people you’re calling gringo think you should knows it’s an insult…

But honestly, you’re being daft. A pub having a party to whip up business isn’t serving chilli as a way to insult the Mexicans any more than Peruvians serving a full English with guacamole are trying to insult the English.

I'm pretty sure most Mexicans have eniugh pressing things to be getting on with than stressing about what people half a world away are doing

And yet your English/British visitors are likely strongly criticising the so called English breakfast because it’s nothing like an English breakfast.
Just like the OP is criticising those ‘parties’ as nothing like her experience of that celebration.

So yes, think the OP is over the top as you want.
But I hope you’re going to have the same attitude when it’s about english ‘culture’.

I’m not easily offended and I loathe cancel culture but I think people are being a bit awful to the OP here.

OK you don’t have to agree with the OP, and you might not get offended about others celebrating aspects of your own culture, but if you’re not from the culture in question who are you to say to a person who is from that culture (like the OP) how they should feel about it?

DorsetKnobBiscuit · Yesterday 21:23

" I’m sure if a random persons (that had nothing to do with Hinduism) decided to throw a “Diwali party” people wouldn’t stay quiet.!"

Sainsbury's rather than 'a random persons' encouraging people to throw a Diwali party here. No limitation to Hindu's only. How can this be allowed?

I would go as far as to say they would be bloody chuffed to see their culture being admired and celebrated so far away from their homeland.

Firstly, how can any celebration of a culture, even if it isn’t 100% accurate, be a negative?

Secondly, the only offensive thing on this thread is you implying that the English have no culture. Nicely loaded quotation marks 🥴

Who cares? I can't imagine telling the Mexicans they're getting Morris dancing wrong if they decided to have a Morris dancing party for a laugh.
