To comment on every single “Die de Muertos” pub party that’s its cultural appropriation?

I’ve seen so many parties popping up around my county that are using AI slop to advertise their “Day of the Death” parties when a) nobody who’s Mexican has been consulted b) the food has nothing to do with Mexican food c) it’s a solemn family occasion - not a fiesta! And no, we don’t do face painting.

Every single time I see one, my eye twitches! I’m sure if a random persons (that had nothing to do with Hinduism) decided to throw a “Diwali party” people wouldn’t stay quiet.

Sorry it’s been one of those days and needed a rant!

Do you mean "Dia de los muertos" aka Day of the Dead, or is this something slightly different you're seeing?

Lampsandlightsandotherthings · Yesterday 19:42

Get a grip ffs. and people do throw divali parties and kids light candles for their divali pots they made at school.
People can’t win, multi cultural activities and embracing all kinds of events are to be celebrated no?

Yes, but not for profit, and not as an excuse to party! There’s no educational content around it

yea it’s a typo is also “Dia de Muertos” (not “de los”) another small pet peeve of mine. That’s the traditional syntax anyway.

Cultural appropriation is not a thing.

It was academic theory adopted by the perpetually offended.

SumptuousPecanNougat · Yesterday 19:49

'Cultural appropriation' is up there with 'TW are women' as one of the stupidest concepts that are foisted upon us today.

loratadine · Yesterday 19:49

I think that your time would probably be better spent looking for a job.

Clearly that’s what OP meant, stop being so pedantic.

YANBU OP, and it’s not comparable to a Diwali celebration mentioned by PP at all- nobody is dressing up in anyone culture as though it’s a costume in the example provided.

Hello from an Irish person. St Patrick’s Day anyone? Glad another country’s getting a look in!

Get a grip. White saviour virtue signalling. I’ve just asked Mexico - they confirm they couldn’t give a fuck.

Dartmoorcheffy · Yesterday 19:56

My mexican friend who lives in devon celebrates it every year with a themed party. Its a big thing for him.

Stayinganontoday · Yesterday 19:57

It’s an intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity according to UNESCO and I mean Day of the Death has been going on for thousands of years one way or the other.

That’s ok as he’s sharing his culture. I’ve done at my daughter’s school. But it very different all of these pubs organising parties for profit.

Just wait 'til you discover what goes on at Christmas.

Dottiethelurcher · Yesterday 20:00

Are you Mexican? I was there once during it and whilst part of it was solemn family stuff, part of it also seemed to be about dressing up and having some fun. I have to say it was fantastic to witness and I enjoyed it very much.

Exactly!

Us Irish would be losing our shit all around the world on St Patrick’s Day if it was! 🤣☘️
