Aibu to eat in the cinema?

Roguegal · Yesterday 15:57

I’ve seen loads of people on mumsnet complaining about people eating on the cinema, while watching the film.

In my opinion it’s always been completely normal and acceptable to buy food to eat with the movie. Usually popcorn, sweets, some cinemas even sell hotdogs and nachos and serve a beer.

Aibu to think it’s very normal and fine to eat while watching the movie and that most people do it?

People should only be allowed to eat in the cinema if they do it during noisy parts of the movie. .

If they can’t control themselves and start rustling and chomping during quiet scenes then they should be ejected . The noises ate revolting. .

Heaven's forbid people eat in the morning!!😱

You didn't get it did you. 🫨
They were eating crap early. If you've had breakfast why do you need to eat sweets etc at that time.

WhereAreWeNow · Yesterday 19:22

I do eat popcorn if I go with family. Probably not if I'm on my own or with a friend. I hate smelly food in the cinema. I don’t understand why they sell hot dogs etc.

SabrinaBricklayer · Yesterday 19:23

I used to eat when I went to the cinema, it was part of the fun of going to the cinema. I did make sure I opened any bags of sweets before the film started, and was aware of keeping irritating rustling noises down. I haven’t been to the cinema for years though as modern films don’t appeal anymore.

Maybe they didn't have breakfast or maybe they did and simply enjoyed some sweets as a treat too. No one 'needs' to eat sweets at any time....or go to the cinema.

Thankfully people don't only do what they need because life would be pretty miserable.

JMSA · Yesterday 19:25

The problem isn’t eating at the cinema. The problem is noisy eaters and packet rustlers.

It's not very healthy is it to skip breakfast then pig out and it's lazy!
It's like the school kids walking to school eating crisps just looks awful.
Something you wouldn't have seen years ago.

Going to the cinema is hardly an active activity. Maybe that makes you lazy too? Why do you need to go so early the morning? Surely you could be doing something more productive.

Charlize43 · Yesterday 19:44

Not a fan of food in cinemas, after sitting next to a woman who nibbled her crisps... she held them and nibbled at the edges. I think she thought she was being especially quiet, but you could hear her teeth going away at the edges. It took her about 90 minutes to eat a standard bag of Walkers.

I came close to losing all control.

What would the coroner say?

Gosh people have some extreme reactions to others eating habits,

Off topic but as school kids we definitely bought rubbish from the newsagents at any time of day, including in the mornings. Crisps, sweets etc. This was in the 80s-90s.

magicbeany · Yesterday 19:47

It’s rotten and annoying but if you can pick something that doesn’t stink out the room, it’s acceptable now with a film. Please don’t eat in the theatre/live shows.

i don’t like the smell or sound of people chomping but concessions make money for cinemas. Popcorn famously has a huge mark up. Cinemas can’t exist on ticket sales alone. That said, I do like going to the NFT where there is no eating. I am a film snob.

Agreed, I’m too tight to buy the popcorn and sweets and nachos (unless there is a good offer).

But the etiquette of cinemas is

popcorn munching is acceptable as is the odd sweet packet rustle. ✅

Mobile phone glare / pings and adults talking are unacceptable ❌

Not just extreme but violent as well.

It's a good thing my handbag is quite small and can't conceal a double pump action shotgun.

100% I go in with my own bottled water and sometimes sweets. I’m partial to a bit of popcorn if there’s an offer on but I would take care not to chomp during quiet bits . People don’t seem to be able do anything without eating now.

I personally hate the noise but if the cinema sells it, it's fair game. Mine even sells (great!) pizzas and gives you a buzzer to tell you when to come and collect them.

Can't people eat before they go or when they get home?

Going to the cinema is planned downtime—skipping breakfast for sweets is just lazy and poor planning.

Nice try at deflecting though.

So people go out during the film to collect their pizza! Not sure why some people bother going to watch a film if they miss bits of it

Except you have no idea if they actually skipped breakfast. Maybe they had breakfast and the sweets as a treat during their planned downtime.

Totally fine in the cinema where the volume is ridiculously loud

in the theatre however, totally unacceptable

But as many have pointed out, the cinemas don’t really make much money on the tickets alone.

Cinemas these days have created an experience where you can watch the movie usually on a recliner chair, enjoy a hot dog some nachos or popcorn and maybe even a beer.

With the huge TVs we have at home now and all the channels and streaming services we have cinemas are struggling on as it is.

I agree. Our community cinema’s tickets are really cheap so I’ll always buy a drink and popcorn to help them (which are also reasonably -priced). Once I realised how important the sales of food and drink are for the cinema, I stopped bringing in my own food or snacks

They we do! It's a very relaxed cinema, some days they have showings for dogs as well.

Films are so padded these days it's rare you miss anything much by nipping out for a wee or to pick up the pre-ordered pizza.

Flee2thebigbeach · Yesterday 21:37

Yes popcorn has been sold in cinemas forever, but I don’t think in the huge buckets of today which practically last the whole film? I don’t like the smell and noise of cinema food so don’t tend to go often but I have most anger with phones lighting up. No, you are not discreetly checking

Denim4ever · Yesterday 21:38

Everyman cinemas exist on the premise of food and drinks being delivered to patrons in the auditorium just prior to the film screening. A ton better than smelly popcorn in absurd quantities for sure but very indicative of a culture of eating in the cinema

ParsonMaybold · Yesterday 21:39

They sell food, so it’s fine to eat food 🥴

I loathe people in general, so we only go to a fancy cinema where you sit at a table and no-one else annoys you with chomping, rustling or slurping.
