Aibu to eat in the cinema?

Roguegal · Yesterday 15:57

I’ve seen loads of people on mumsnet complaining about people eating on the cinema, while watching the film.

In my opinion it’s always been completely normal and acceptable to buy food to eat with the movie. Usually popcorn, sweets, some cinemas even sell hotdogs and nachos and serve a beer.

Aibu to think it’s very normal and fine to eat while watching the movie and that most people do it?

One of the worst thing about the cinema. No wonder everyone is so fat nowadays.

You're sitting on your arse expending no calories whatsoever..... why do you also need to stuff your face???

I hate the sound of people eating. Gross.

Surely people are usually sitting on their arse when they eat? When do you eat? While you're out for a jog?

We've had to move several times recently at cinema showings of quieter films where we've been unfortunately sat next to overweight people with family size packs of doritos. Nobody can eat them quietly. Blurgh 😝

Why did you feel the need to say that they are overweight?

If a slim person was eating would that make it better?

Eating at the cinema is fine. Movies are very loud and cover most eating sounds, the actors aren’t physically there and trying to work, and tickets aren’t insanely expensive such that in most cases you are not ruining someone’s special treat.

Eating at the theatre however…

Paganpentacle · Yesterday 16:17

SRB anyone?
They used to sell hotdogs back in the day 😂

They never have been in my experience. But no, not if they were noisily eating. Just going on my personal lived experience 🙃

Gosh, what are the odds of that happening?

The Cinema is one of the only times I’ll munch through a sharing bag of Revels (purchased from the local Tesco Express of course) in an hour. It’s part of the ‘experience’.

PoppieCock · Yesterday 16:18

The noise doesn't really bother me because I find most cinemas deafening now.

But it turns my stomach sometimes with all the Nachos and McDonalds smells etc.

I think if you're going to eat something smelly, it's better to do it before you go in.

But that said, the cinemas around her sell the smelly food.

Megifer · Yesterday 16:17

Seems unfortunately very common. We do go once a week.

Theatre I've never experienced anyone eating. Although there was a bloke in front of me recently on his phone ffs. At the theatre.

Hell is Other People. I'm sure someone famous once remarked.

Tryagain26 · Yesterday 16:19

If what you are eating is noisy or smelly then yes you are being unreasonable

DoAWheelie · Yesterday 16:19

The majority of money from ticket sales goes to the box office, the cinema only gets to keep about 20% of it. If no one bought food from them we would no longer have any cinemas.

Roguegal · Yesterday 16:20

I can’t say I’ve ever been disturbed even once by an overweight person eating crisps, let alone several times 🤣

I also can’t say I’ve ever paid enough attention to notice what the fat people are eating compared to the slim people.

It’s dark and noisy in there and I’m enjoying the film.

Yes. It's horrible, and very distracting.
The only thing worse is eating in the theatre, because that distracts the performers, as well as the audience.

Ljcrow · Yesterday 16:21

YANBU, having snacks at the cinema is part of the experience, but it'd be good if people kept the rustling and opening of packets to the noisier parts of films, not tense moments.

Ljcrow · Yesterday 16:22

Much more offensive is people talking or using phones during a film. Infuriating!

Well, you asked for experiences. Are you doubting mine? Just because it doesn't tally with yours? Why even start a thread if you're going to get all offended and disbelieving? Or are you one of those who only wants comments agreeing with you?

seahorsessky · Yesterday 16:22

My oldest apparently got told off for eating sweets in a theatre (I know you said cinema, but unless there's subtitles, it's pretty much the same from the point of the customers). Wasn't with me, so I can't comment on how noisy it was.
I suppose you could argue they shouldn't sell things they don't want people to eat, but that people (including my kid!) should be respectful and try to be quiet.

That said, the same amount of noise (someone eating a sweet) could be painful to one person, and not even noticed by another.

You should do the lottery this week then!

Roast dinner in the cinema? weird. Popcorn/Nachos? Totally normal.

malloryknox123 · Yesterday 16:23

It’s normal to eat in the cinema it’s part of the experience, but we can still have manners and not chomp and slurp and make a racket

HideousKinky · Yesterday 16:24

I go at times when the cinema is as empty as possible and then sit as far away as I can from the people with enormous buckets of popcorn which they loudly & endlessly chomp their way through.

It's ironic that one of the noisiest foods is a standard cinema offering

This is why theatres sell tins of crisps and not bags. A subtle hint

You must be lucky if you’ve never been disturbed by someone eating crisps in the cinema, or you’re the one crunching crisps so loudly you can’t hear anyone else’s crunching over your own😂

I honestly couldn’t care less about the size of BMI of the person though, a size 22 person eating a bag of Kettle chips is just as loud as a size 4 person eating a bag of Kettle chips!

Topseyt123 · Yesterday 16:25

It's perfectly normal. No need to pay too much attention to those who say it isn't.

I tend to raid the sweets and nuts section of the nearby M&S Food Hall if we go to the cinema. Cheaper than the way overpriced cinema pick & mix or popcorn. I do like my Percy Pig and Colin the Caterpillar sweets, and/or a bag of giant chocolate buttons. Much better.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · Yesterday 16:25

angelos02 · Yesterday 16:03

As long as it doesn't make any noise, no problem.

I only have my rolling IV stand with the bladder from a wine box hanging from it.
I do have to have a seat at the end of a row in order to accommodate it, and the only noise being if someone trips over the stand or garrotes themselves on the supply pipe.
