Aibu to eat in the cinema?

Roguegal · Yesterday 15:57

I’ve seen loads of people on mumsnet complaining about people eating on the cinema, while watching the film.

In my opinion it’s always been completely normal and acceptable to buy food to eat with the movie. Usually popcorn, sweets, some cinemas even sell hotdogs and nachos and serve a beer.

Aibu to think it’s very normal and fine to eat while watching the movie and that most people do it?

Films are so loud that I never hear anyone munching!

Mooselove · Yesterday 17:11

I hate the rustling of sweet bags/wrappers, chomping of food and the smell. Me and DH go to the cinema to watch the film not eat.

When we lived in London we loved going to the NFT a few times a week as they did not allow food (not sure if they do now).

Isobel201 · Yesterday 17:14

we usually eat beforehand and just have a drink. Food at the cinemas is expensive.

Um, yeah, eating at the movie theater has been completely normal for as long as I can remember. My local movie theater now sells entire pizzas, burgers, wings, nachos, and all sorts of other actual meals, so clearly eating during a movie is not only allowed but somewhat expected. I mean, why would theaters sell all this food if people weren't supposed to eat it while watching the film? Granted, I still mostly see people with popcorn and candy, but the idea that eating in a movie theater is somehow rude or inappropriate is genuinely baffling to me. Obviously, there's a difference between eating your popcorn and being obnoxiously loud or making a mess, but complaining about people simply eating food in a place that literally sells food for that exact purpose seems a little ridiculous.

I take it you’re in the US. Attitudes may be a wee bit different here.

Many people have serious objections to noisy rustling, crunching, chewing, slurping, and absolutely any smelly hot food.

My point was cinema food normalised the idea that every time you sit down for a couple of hours you need a mountian of junk food. People are doing the same when they sit down in the evening at home because it's how things 'should' be.

I genuinely dont recognise that, not least because food beyond snacks in the cinema hasnt been a 'thing' until recent years, yet people have been eating junk food in front of the TV for many many years.

I suppose im just struggling with the idea that an Odeon hotdog is to blame for something people did way before they even served food like that.

Makes you wonder why there hasnt been a documentary made on it.

wldpwr · Yesterday 17:19

This is why I love Everyman, the food is delicious!

Grapewrath · Yesterday 17:22

Anything cinemas sell is fine imo or a version of. Hotdogs are questionable but that’s my personal preference
Hard no to KFC and maccies etc.
i live for snacks, it’s weird that people don’t think eating at the cinema is fine 😂😂

SouthLondonMum22 · Yesterday 17:27

It's part of the cinema experience for me. It's rare that I go but I always get a hotdog or nachos when I do.

PigeonsAmongstTheCats · Yesterday 17:27

I don't care who eats and who doesn't.

I just don't want to have to listen to it. And the cinema seems to attract an awful lot of people who eat like pigs at a trough with their mouths open, shoveling food in constantly, slurping and squeaking at their drinks and constant fucking rustling of bags.

If you can do it quietly, like a normal person, crack right on!

You're sitting on your arse expending no calories whatsoever..... why do you also need to stuff your face???

Surely people are usually sitting on their arse when they eat? When do you eat? While you're out for a jog?

42goingon14 I was just about to say the same. 😀
Do some people only eat while they are running a marathon?

TheGander · Yesterday 17:35

I’m going to see a film at 7:30 today and I’ve already prepared my couscous salad to eat during the movie. I’ll be as quiet as I can.

I went to a Broadway show last year, one of my life long dreams and it was a proper old original Broadway theatre, and a very popular show. They sold sweets that were individually wrapped and had the loudest ever noise, we got some and I had to really subtly open each at applause moments. However many people didn't care and they were ripping them open during emotional or quiet scenes. It was that type of plastic that we don't seem to have here anymore like the really noisy type. Why on earth do they do this, they could stock any product they choose and they deliberately interfere with the enjoyment of a show they are trying to promote. It baffles me.

Eating in the cinema is perfectly normal and acceptable. Eating in the theatre watching a live show however, needs to be far more considered, and many theatre goers increasingly have not got this memo (along with a lot of other aspects of theatre etiquette), they are not the same thing.

If you’re not aware: Sweets/chocolates with very minimal scrunching and consumed with a consciousness that you do everything possible to minimise the sound and eat in the quietest possible manner is okay (although, I agree that it’s nuts for for the theatres to sell them!) , icecream bought at interval - go for it. Apart from that, the theatre is not for food / noisy snacks!

Got to have snacks and a drink at the cinema, it is part of the experience for me, we go to an Everyman, so I usually have a large glass of wine and some olives or cashews.

i don’t order hot food, but no issues with those who do, simply we don’t as we tend to go for dinner after,

I’ve also never judged the weight of the people eating. As quite obviously it’s all shapes and sizes. I suspect people are being goady mentioning weight. Sometimes people have issues on their personal lives and they want to be contentious on line,

Yes, I'm American but my husband is Irish and I know for a fact that candy and popcorn are normal at movie theaters there too. I haven’t been to an Irish cinema in about 15 years, so sure, maybe they even serve 'proper food 'now as well but you guys also serve ice cream at the theater so I’m not sure we should be pretending American movie snacks are the weird part here.

BillieWiper · Yesterday 17:41

Nothing remotely smelly or noisy. Which is difficult as all consumables do make some kind of noise.

I was in a small ish cinema screen recently and a lady a couple seats down from me started eating crispy onion sushi rolls with her hands. She was trying to do it slowly and subtly but it did not work. I didn't even look directly but I could smell every ingredient! TBF the air con might've been on the fritz.

I came down with a COVID type illness a couple days later. Not the sushi eaters fault I'm sure. But it does feel antisocial!

After the "tub o'mash" reminder I had to search back. No way was that thread in 2011 😭

I take in a Tesco meal deal.

I swear to god I once saw a couple bring in a full roast chicken dinner in various Tupperware. It was amazing. I was full raging as I only had my crappy sandwich and was green with envy.

Why do you need to eat at that time? Will it fit your food pattern for the day/week?

It is important to understand that eating whilst watching TV impedes feelings of fullness and increases how much you eat.

That might not matter to you unless you've got a cinema yearly pass and go every other day.

Edited

The cinema is not the television.

it’s not the TV but I suspect the effects would if anything en enhanced by the more immersive experience of the cinema

smooththecat · Yesterday 17:44

It is normal, I didn’t mind as a child but as an adult it’s annoying to have so many distractions at the cinema. If it were just popcorn/sweets I could deal with it but it’s stronger smelling stuff + the talking + the phones. You need to go to an arty cinema to avoid it.

Popcorn and crispy Coke improve my cinematic experience immensely!

Kalanthe · Yesterday 17:47

People who go to the cinema for entertainment eat food. It's part of the experience and it's absolutely fine. Cinemas sell loads of food for a reason. Popcorn has been sold in cinemas for 100 years. There's nothing wrong with that.

Some people go to smaller cinemas to see independent films. Some of them see themselves as cinema connoisseurs. They don't want to mindlessly munch popcorn as they consider watching independent films to be a cultural experience.

I've done both and I would never feel guilty that I'm munching popcorn in an odeon watching a blockbuster.

One of the worst thing about the cinema. No wonder everyone is so fat nowadays.

You're sitting on your arse expending no calories whatsoever..... why do you also need to stuff your face???

I hate the sound of people eating. Gross.

I eat pretty much all of my meals sitting down though so your point is somewhat flawed.

Of course she’s sitting on her arse. Do you run around the room while eating your meals then?
