Aibu to eat in the cinema?

Roguegal · Yesterday 15:57

I’ve seen loads of people on mumsnet complaining about people eating on the cinema, while watching the film.

In my opinion it’s always been completely normal and acceptable to buy food to eat with the movie. Usually popcorn, sweets, some cinemas even sell hotdogs and nachos and serve a beer.

Aibu to think it’s very normal and fine to eat while watching the movie and that most people do it?

I can’t say I’ve ever been disturbed even once by an overweight person eating crisps, let alone several times 🤣

I also can’t say I’ve ever paid enough attention to notice what the fat people are eating compared to the slim people.

It’s dark and noisy in there and I’m enjoying the film.

And to be sat right next to them, in a quiet cinema where they could have sat anywhere, eating Doritos and them all being overweight.

You can order a uber eats to ours and they will sell you whole pitchers of wine and beer to take in.

They do ban crisps and strong smells like curry.

Why do you need to eat at that time? Will it fit your food pattern for the day/week?

It is important to understand that eating whilst watching TV impedes feelings of fullness and increases how much you eat.

That might not matter to you unless you've got a cinema yearly pass and go every other day.

Edited

You sound like a lot of fun.

I don't mind as long as they're not too loud and the food isn't too smelly.
But I did get annoyed a while ago when the woman next to me came in with an enormous bucket of liquid and then spent the whole film getting up and down, presumably to go to the loo. And about half way through the film, she came back in after one of her trips, with another drink...I was baffled. She must have been very thirsty!

We nearly had to leave. Watching Project Hail Mary when it came out. It was completely full, they were completely unaware. Luckily on our way out there were 2 free seats at the side. So it didn't completely ruin our night. Actually I wasn't even sat next to the women it was my partner. But I could hear them from my seat so must have been even worse where he was sat. It was him who said we'll have to leave, this is ruining the film for me.

Going to see Ricky Gervais actually tonight so might suggest to him if we speak to him after the show that he uses this as a comedy routine....

Mumsnet is a weird place where everything is ‘grim’ back in the real world it’s completely normal

SRB anyone?
They used to sell hotdogs back in the day 😂

What’s an SRB?

I always eat in the cinema, but then I didn’t get this fat by denying myself. Nothing noisy or smelly though, usually Minstrels for some reason. It’s the only time I crave them. The Odyssey was long enough enough to get through a pillowcase full - good times.

We were in a crowded cinema the other week (pre-booked seats, no space to move) and the woman next to us was eating a really smelly tub of some kind of tuna salad she had brought in with her. Horrible, lingering smell and no way of getting away from it.

I wish cinemas would go back to banning food brought in from outside. I also avoid going to Everyman cinemas now because of all the disturbance of people being brought food at their seats, and the noise and smell of it.

Much more offensive is people talking or using phones during a film. Infuriating!

Yep. Absolutely this. And it’s getting worse and worse. Went to the cinema at the weekend and sat next to a couple who gave us all a running commentary of everything happening in the film, constantly turning to each other and chatting about it. If they’d had a bag of Doritos maybe they would have shut the fuck up more. 😁

LondonLass2026 · Yesterday 16:43

If it wasn't normal, there wouldn't be such large provisions to buy popcorn and sweets etc in cinemas.

I haven't been to the cinema since 2011 but I never ate crisps or anything crunchy or noisy. Can't stand inconsiderate people.

ParkMumForever · Yesterday 16:43

I’ve heard cinemas being described as ‘food courts with entertainment’

miniaturepixieonacid · Yesterday 16:44

It's normal. I think some people are against it because, in the last 20 years or so, popcorn, fizzy drinks, crisps and sweets have started to be sold in theatres, undermining the once fairly universally accepted etiquette that it's not acceptable to eat during a theatre performance.

But a cinema is not a theatre and food has always been sold in them. Cinemas rely on that money (sadly, maybe theatres do too nowadays, idk).

I still find it very rude and distracting when people eat in theatres but would do it myself in a cinema. They're very different.

I don't think anyone needs to worry abut people becoming more obese because of either though - both cost a fortune, nobody's doing it often enough to affect their overall diet, are they!

Sartre · Yesterday 16:44

I can’t stand the stench of hot food in the cinema e.g nachos, hot dogs. I’m like this generally and absolutely detest people who eat McDonald’s on the train, it smells so bad and lingers. I don’t care about popcorn, crisps, chocolate and so forth.

Opus3 · Yesterday 16:45

I have been known to buy nachos and a bottle of wine for the event cinema 😆

I have a specific seat I like, it's a 2 so I'm usually alone up in the left hand corner. It's a great night!

jmh740 · Yesterday 16:45

I always take snacks to the pics usually popcorn or fruit pastilles. After a traffic jam delayed us we once ate our subway sandwixhes in the cinema. At the cinema in Trafford Centre ive seen people bring full meals in, pizza huts maccys etc.

Monty36 · Yesterday 16:45

I dislike it. I would hate it if someone was next to me.
Had a bloke in the back ate the whole way through a film. I do mean the whole way through. He had to go out and get more. Buckets of stuff. Crackling, crunching. Slurping.
Bad too were the people having some sort of Mexican meal. In the confined space it was very smelly.

A bit I can get, but when people eat and drink it tends to be a large amount and constant. And noisy or/and smelly stuff.

AuADHD · Yesterday 16:45

It might be normal but it’s very antisocial and is the reason I don’t tend to go to the cinema.

AmazingBouncingFerret · Yesterday 16:46

Throwback to the 2010’s thread where people made suggestions for silent food for the cinema.
Tub O’ Mash was one of my favourites.

Monty36 · Yesterday 16:46

We used to go once a week. And eat afterwards. Most cinemas are placed near to restaurants and all sorts of places to eat.

I do wonder if people eating buckets of stuff at the pictures do at home in front of the tv too ?

Dontlletmedownbruce · Yesterday 16:47

I went to a Broadway show last year, one of my life long dreams and it was a proper old original Broadway theatre, and a very popular show. They sold sweets that were individually wrapped and had the loudest ever noise, we got some and I had to really subtly open each at applause moments. However many people didn't care and they were ripping them open during emotional or quiet scenes. It was that type of plastic that we don't seem to have here anymore like the really noisy type. Why on earth do they do this, they could stock any product they choose and they deliberately interfere with the enjoyment of a show they are trying to promote. It baffles me.

nicepotoftea · Yesterday 16:47

Depends what you are eating.

I think it's anti-social to eat anything that you can't eat quietly or that has a strong smell.

We've had to move several times recently at cinema showings of quieter films where we've been unfortunately sat next to overweight people with family size packs of doritos. Nobody can eat them quietly. Blurgh 😝

Would you have still moved if they were skinny, was it the fatness that repulsed you?

God forbid someone overweight should go to the cinema and eat a snack. 🧐

Resealablestrip · Yesterday 16:50

I think cinema food is brilliantly successful marketing, managing to persuade people to pay ££££ for very cheap food, and the idea that we can't sit for a couple of hours without an oversized bucket of pure junk food is part of the reason for the NHS crisis, but eating at the cinema is encouraged by the companies, so I don't know why anyone would think it is inappropriate.

user47639820987 · Yesterday 16:51

People rustling crisp packets are the reason I've not stepped in a cinema for years!
