Aibu to eat in the cinema?

Roguegal · Yesterday 15:57

I’ve seen loads of people on mumsnet complaining about people eating on the cinema, while watching the film.

In my opinion it’s always been completely normal and acceptable to buy food to eat with the movie. Usually popcorn, sweets, some cinemas even sell hotdogs and nachos and serve a beer.

Aibu to think it’s very normal and fine to eat while watching the movie and that most people do it?

I just can’t understand how cinema popcorn or the other food they sell is a “treat”.

It's gone far beyond popcorn, though, that's the problem. This is pasted from Vue's website

No big screen experience is complete without an abundance of delicious munchables. Food and drink from Vue is anything from big bites to smaller snacks you simply can’t resist, we’ve got every craving covered... and some of the other ones you didn’t even realise you had. We’re talking hot food like chicken tenders, pizza, chicken popcorn, potato wedges, mini pancakes, mini donuts, nachos, hot dogs; snacks like chocolate bags, sweet bags, pick 'N' mix, crisps and drinks like Pepsi, Tango Ice Blast, milkshakes, ice cream, crisps and anything else with a bit of heft to it. When it comes to your in-film food, you’re not here to mess around. And neither are we. Cinema food and drink have never looked so mouthwateringly good.

I don't want to sit next to someone eating what is essentially a full meal with the accompanying noise and smell. It's distracting. I want to enjoy an immersive big screen experience without being reminded of my surroundings - that's the whole point of the cinema.

A bit of popcorn or some non-rustling sweets are fair enough but with all that stuff on the menu, they might as well just install a big screen in McDonalds,

Popcorn and crispy Coke improve my cinematic experience immensely!

What is crispy coke?

I just can’t understand why people can’t sit through a film without chomping their way through grotesquely overpriced junk food.

I just can't understand why people can't comment on an eating at the cinema thread without using overexaggerated terms like chomping, stuffing your face, slurping etc.

I eat (not chomp or stuff my face, it's just eating) at the cinema because it is part of the experience for me. It's that simple.

Really cold, near icy Coke with ice.

kind of missing the point that watching a film at the cinema isn't meant to be the same as watching one at home and that the popcorn and what-have-you is intended to be part of the experience.

No, you are paying for the immersive experience of watching a film on a huge screen with surround sound. Popcorn is fair enough, it's all the hot food that's a nuisance. Yes, the cinemas sell it, I get that, so you can't complain to people eating it, it's just an annoying situation. It isn't as though, nowadays, it would be difficult for people to get that kind of food to eat at home while watching a film.

But as many have pointed out, the cinemas don’t really make much money on the tickets alone.

Cinemas these days have created an experience where you can watch the movie usually on a recliner chair, enjoy a hot dog some nachos or popcorn and maybe even a beer.

With the huge TVs we have at home now and all the channels and streaming services we have cinemas are struggling on as it is.

As long as it is quiet and doesn't stink, and you don't leave rubbish around afterwards, fair enough.

Have you tasted good popcorn?

kkloo · Yesterday 18:21

I always eat crisps and popcorn at the cinema, I wouldn't go if I couldn't eat, and if no one bought food there would be no (or very few) cinemas left open anyway.

I always go when the cinema is practically empty though, not because I'm trying to spare others from hearing me eat, but because I like it when it's empty, so if anyone books the same showing hoping no one will be eating then that's unfortunate for them.

I'm not overweight either.

Seems unfortunately very common. We do go once a week.

Theatre I've never experienced anyone eating. Although there was a bloke in front of me recently on his phone ffs. At the theatre.

Hell is Other People. I'm sure someone famous once remarked.

Did they remark after they'd sat near you in the cinema?

What’s an SRB?

I always eat in the cinema, but then I didn’t get this fat by denying myself. Nothing noisy or smelly though, usually Minstrels for some reason. It’s the only time I crave them. The Odyssey was long enough enough to get through a pillowcase full - good times.

"SRB
SRB
Sausage in a roll in a box for me..."

WokeUpEarlyWalkedTheDog · Yesterday 18:38

I hate smelly food in the cinema and it’s one of the reasons I love to go alone, during the day and during the week - much smaller audience and I can move if there’s someone eating a burger, hot dog or nachos os similar.

I would ban it if I ruled the world.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · Yesterday 18:41

Monty36 · Yesterday 17:49

They sell it because they can make money from the people buying it.
Not because you are required to eat it. They don’t sell it because you are supposed to eat whilst watching a film. You can decide not to. It is not compulsory.
Years ago in the UK the only thing sold in a cinema was an ice cream.
And it was nicer.

They sold cigarettes too.

Those really were the days.

RaraRachael · Yesterday 18:46

I never eat anything in the cinema but am definitely in the minority

Netcurtainnelly · Yesterday 18:47

Why do you need to lig out just because your watching a film. Eat before you go.
The worst thing I've seen is people eating at a really early morning showing?
Is that breakfast?? 😲

Whoops75 · Yesterday 18:50

I sit in an aisle seat with dh or someone I know beside me for this reason.
It would be too distracting to sit beside a stranger eating and fidgeting.

TroysMammy · Yesterday 18:55

Although I have hearing loss I can hear high pitched noises. I may be wearing hearing aids for dialogue but will only be able to hear the rustlers, slurpers and chompers. Also the smell of nachos make me feel queasy.

It's not the eating, it's how loud it is! Haha mega loud packets being opened and also: constantly! How much food do you need to watch a film??

Monty36 · Yesterday 18:56

No, obviously snacks aren’t compulsory, I never said they were. I said they’re a normal and expected part of the cinema experience. And “they only sell them because people buy them” isn’t really a rebuttal when concessions are literally one of the main ways movie theaters stay profitable. If people suddenly stopped buying food and drinks, a lot of theaters would be in serious trouble.

Your original post inferred that it was something people were expected to do. No, I didn’t say you said it was compulsory. I was pointing out that it is not mandatory.
And I not issuing a ‘rebuttal’, but simply expressing my view from the post you made.
Cinemas will be alright. They could offer an eating area outside of the actual screening.
Anyway, the amount and smell of food in cinemas here is not generally well liked at all. Perhaps if they sold less more people would actually go.

Chicken tenders and pizza 😳😳😳 I was not aware of that. No smelly food should be allowed in such a confined space

One of the worst thing about the cinema. No wonder everyone is so fat nowadays.

You're sitting on your arse expending no calories whatsoever..... why do you also need to stuff your face???

I hate the sound of people eating. Gross.

Cinemas have been selling food for as long as I've been alive (a long time). You can take your own healthier food in if you want. I don't think it contributes to the overall weight of the population (and it's far from EVERYONE being fat)

Retrogamer · Yesterday 19:13

Snacks are part of the experience. I usually don't eat anything but I get a drink. When I take my DS we get a combo box because it's a nice treat for him.
Worst experience was when people near me got blind drunk, and I was worried they were going to vomit cos they kept making gagging sounds. I moved in the end, wasn't worth getting into an argument with a couple of drunks.
