Aibu to eat in the cinema?

Roguegal · Yesterday 15:57

I’ve seen loads of people on mumsnet complaining about people eating on the cinema, while watching the film.

In my opinion it’s always been completely normal and acceptable to buy food to eat with the movie. Usually popcorn, sweets, some cinemas even sell hotdogs and nachos and serve a beer.

Aibu to think it’s very normal and fine to eat while watching the movie and that most people do it?

It might be normal but it’s very antisocial and is the reason I don’t tend to go to the cinema.

But it’s not antisocial, because the cinema owners encourage it therefore it’s part of the experience.

It’s almost as silly as saying that it’s antisocial to eat in a restaurant. Food is sold and promoted as part of the experience.

Some people might not like it, but the problem is with them not with the people buying and eating the food.

Amd in fact if people didn’t buy and eating the food comas would cease to exist because they rely on food sales.

God forbid someone overweight should go to the cinema and eat a snack. 🧐

Exactly, they should be listening to a motivational podcast on the treadmill if they must insist on being seen in public.

Its the smell and often disgusting chewing noises that upset me. Prefer an art house cinema where they might sell food but its to eat outside the actual screening with a suitably adult drink. Popcorn & sweets fine but smelly hot dogs, nachos & pizza a definite no. Also the rubbish dropped on the floors can be disgusting. Don't want to sit surrounded by someone else's dinner.

Definitely worth a watch

I don't mind food in general but please eat quietly and don't tip your tray of guacamole all over the person in front (yes this happened to DS). But popcorn is the food of the devil - the stench is vile and puts me off going to the more popular movies. Luckily doesn't seem to be a problem with more niche films.

I think cinema food is brilliantly successful marketing, managing to persuade people to pay ££££ for very cheap food, and the idea that we can't sit for a couple of hours without an oversized bucket of pure junk food is part of the reason for the NHS crisis, but eating at the cinema is encouraged by the companies, so I don't know why anyone would think it is inappropriate.

I highly doubt that the cinema is driving the obesity crisis.

A monthly cinema trip that involves a portion of nachos, or a hotdog, or popcorn etc. is not part of the cause of the NHS crisis.

A daily cinema trip possibly.

One of the worst thing about the cinema. No wonder everyone is so fat nowadays.

You're sitting on your arse expending no calories whatsoever..... why do you also need to stuff your face???

I hate the sound of people eating. Gross.

You are aware that when people are eating they are not expending calories at the same time? People in restaurants are sitting still, as are those drinking in bars. People at home often eat dinner then go to sit down to watch TV or scroll on their phones. Why on earth is a cinema different? Are people not allowed sit down for 2 hours ever?

Snacks for the adverts fine

Chomping and rustling through the actual film - nasty

Cinemas make fuck all on the tickets and are struggling as it is.

I always get a huge popcorn and a bucket of pop. It's a treat, who cares!

Am v.considerate though and stop mid-chew during tense scenes 🤣

I didn't didn't say a monthly cinema trip was. I said the idea that we can't sit for a couple of hours without....

Normal but actual smelly or noisy food shouldn't be allowed.

Everyman cinema brings pizzas, burgers etc to your seat!

Your post was about cinema food.

Id say on average it's a once a month thing at most.

That is not the cause of the NHS crisis.

DoubleBusy2026 · Yesterday 17:02

@LittleJusticeYou sound absolutely vile and judgmental, yuck.

SillySeal · Yesterday 17:02

I dont mind people eating in the cinema on the whole but it depends what people are eating. Some people eat so loudly, its disgusting. Thats not just in the cinema but in general. I dont like watching a movie next to people who eat like a horse but if people eat "normally " then it's fine.

wishingonastar101 · Yesterday 17:07

popcorn, revels yes.
burger and fries no.

one of the reasons everyone is fat is that they eat all the time.

My point was cinema food normalised the idea that every time you sit down for a couple of hours you need a mountian of junk food. People are doing the same when they sit down in the evening at home because it's how things 'should' be.

LoafofSellotape · Yesterday 17:08

Pop corn and sweets yes, hotdogs and nachos etc are revolting imo because of the smell.

AIiswatchingyou · Yesterday 16:02

Why do you need to eat at that time? Will it fit your food pattern for the day/week?

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11722569/

It is important to understand that eating whilst watching TV impedes feelings of fullness and increases how much you eat.

That might not matter to you unless you've got a cinema yearly pass and go every other day.

Edited

This is ridiculous. If I indulge in some popcorn while watching a film, I often don’t need the adjacent meal. It’s not extra calories, it’s just a calorie swap. There is no need to shame people for enjoying a movie snack.

MandemChickenShop · Yesterday 17:10

there's a Maccies next to our cinema so I normally get a 1/4 Pounder, Big Mac, Chicken Burger and large chips and a milkshake and sneak it in under my parka

stinks the place out, it's well funny

thatsnotmyusernameeither · Yesterday 17:10

Imagine if there was a way you could watch a film on a tv screen without hearing the general public all around you eating and drinking while trying to watch the same tv screen… like imagine if we all had our very own tv screen in our own living room where we could watch a film with nobody else annoying us?
