To not be able to like Traitors?

Traitor8er · Yesterday 09:17

I can't be alone surely? Tried to watch as there's some interesting people in series 2. I didn't watch 1st series. Maybe that's the issue?
I just couldn't see the appeal?
It's obviously massive.

Should I keep watching as otherwise I'm missing a fantastic series?

Well I love it. But I could not give one toss about Strictly 🤷‍♀️

Plus there’s something basically hilarious about watching someone you last saw playing Aneurin Bevan or Tony Blair or Hamlet freaking out in a cabin among dozens of wedding dresses or singing ‘Ring! Ring! Ring!’ in a wood while holiding hands with Romesh Ranganethan.

Yes yes yes Grin
People out of context and under pressure. Like Celia Imrie and The Fart last time.
And I love seeing how people choose to dress for it.

It's all managed, they don't choose

Someone else puts Joe Lycett in those outfits? James Blunt in his pastel blazer and chinos? 😄 I don’t think so.

BeardySchnauzer · Yesterday 19:58

James blunt was told off for plugging the company he bought his suits from

I hated The Traitors when it first came on. Stupid people playing a stupid nonsensical game imagining they could intuit "guilt" or otherwise from absolutely no evidence.

I still think the muggle version is pretty thin gruel.

But the Celebrity Traitors is much better. I think it's because they all take it much less seriously. It therefore becomes a stupid game played in a stupid spirit.

Not at all. There’s a difference between saying you don’t like it, or it’s not for you, and sneering about “moronic” programmes, trashy tv and so on.

There's sneering on here about people who don't like it. Including your own post making assumptions about posters trying to position themselves as sophisticated.

And as another poster said in real life you get the "how can you not like it/do you live under a rock?"

Facecreamed · Yesterday 20:17

Yes tastes do differ. I didn't watch GOT as I knew the gratuitously violent content etc so knew it wasn't my cup of tea.

Here's the thing though I quite like silly celeb reality shows, iacgmooh etc so it isn't that much of a stretch to think I'd like this what with all the publicity etc but the content is just so lacking. How may times must we hear 'I think she's a traitor' without anything to back it up expect applying lipgloss or something irrelevant.

It is all so very tenuous. It has all the ingredients but it is such a damp squib of nothingness which reveals all the celebs barring Rob and Romesh to be rather dull and one a bit snippy too, I'm looking at you Miranda.

I don’t disagree it’s a bit tenuous, because it mostly comes down to casting, and even then it can be a bit of a damp squib. This season so far is working less well as an ensemble— Richard E Grant basically taking himself out within minutes of being made a traitor, James Acaster turning out to be not much fun as a traitor, not many other people emerging as particular amusing or vocal.

This is a sentence from a Guardian interview with Bella Ramsey

"When Ramsey got the first callback from Mazin and Druckmann, they joined the Zoom from their childhood bedroom."

WHO? Who was in their childhood bedroom? Mazin and Druckmann? Bella? Were Mazin and Druckmann in Bella's childhood bedroom? It makes everything so much more linguistically complicated than it needs to be.

Compare with "When Ramsey got the first callback from Mazin and Druckmann, she joined the Zoom from her childhood bedroom."

I know that's not the point of this thread, but it's an excellent example of why so-called gender-neutral pronouns obfuscate meaning.

Well, unless you imagine that the two producers shared a childhood bedroom, it it perfectly clear.

"It it" isn't.

Typically the last noun mentioned is the one doing the action so "When Ramsey... blah blah from Mazin and Druckmann THEY joined the call..." - the "they" would indicate the last mentioned noun - Mazin and Druckmann in this case. The pronoun "she" would disambiguate.

The author would have done better to use "Bella" instead of "they" if they really couldn't face using "she".

PhoebeBuffay1234 · Yesterday 20:34

I have to confess I only like the celebrity one. Otherwise it’s just the same thing every episode.

Yes, I understand how language works.

You don't seem to understand how family dynamics work.

The context is quite clear, unless the two unrelated TV producers shared a childhood bedroom.

My Dds are round about her age so I think 32 is really young to start messing with your face, and would think mine were mad to start doing it.

I know right. Yet loads of young people now - even younger than Maya (people in their 20s!) have fillers and botox now. A young colleague of my DH has had lip filler recently, and it's made her look like a duck. And she has also had botox.

She's 19.

Gettingbysomehow · Yesterday 20:50

I cant bear it OP. I cant stand Strictly either. The name alone makes me cringe. It sounds like a BDSM club.

How do you know they were unrelated and not e.g. brothers?

Lots of film producers are brothers, or have a family connection. Clear language, developed and refined over millennia, makes things clear for everyone.

Dicking around with bits of it makes things unequivocally worse. Language evolves naturally over time, not by a pressure group demanding the rules are changed.

Flee2thebigbeach · Yesterday 21:13

I thought I’d watch this series for the first time to see what it was all about. I genuinely don’t know who half of them are - including Bella - but I don’t think that matters, and I am enjoying it! I am finding the missions boring though so watch on catch up and fast forward.

You cant be a south london cockney. It's not where cockneys are from

You don't have to like everything everyone else likes.

Exactly, do we really need to explain this. It’s called different tastes. I personally like seeing all the different celebrities interacting who aren’t normally together, also to see how they react and handle situations. It’s not trying to be clever, they’re just tasks.

Meh. The first celeb traitors was quite fun. We only watched because DD wanted to but it was enjoyable. This series, less so. There are too many comedians, none of whom are remotely funny!

BTW, Nick Mohammed was born in Britain to a Cypriot mother and Trinidadian father. On what planet would this make him “Asian”?

He isn’t as such but he does have some Indian heritage because his dad is Indo-Trinidadian (ie Nick’s paternal grandad went over to Trinidad from India)

OH GOD, I loathed that. Watched a few minutes. Also loathed Ello Ello, Last of the Summer Wine, Gavin and Stacey and Mrs Brown's Boys.

Oh, an ally! I did like LOTSW because we used to live not far from there and I really miss the hills, very flat here. I really can't understand why OFAH makes its fans to rude and aggressive.

I have to disagree about Only Fools And Horses not being funny. One of the funniest programmes ever made. IMO. Absolute comedy gold.

People are entitled to not like it of course, but I don't think anyone can say it's not funny.

Probably the same people who say Friends is crap, and not funny. It's not crap and it's very funny!

.

Edited

I can most definitely say it's not funny, whether or not one finds something funny is a personal choice, there isn't a formula that makes something funny.
