To not be able to like Traitors?

Traitor8er · Yesterday 09:17

I can't be alone surely? Tried to watch as there's some interesting people in series 2. I didn't watch 1st series. Maybe that's the issue?
I just couldn't see the appeal?
It's obviously massive.

Should I keep watching as otherwise I'm missing a fantastic series?

I’m a cynic so I wonder if the stars that they want to push (like Alan Carr) are put as traitors as the traitors names are all over the place unlike the faithfuls

PistachioTiramisu · Yesterday 11:01

I do enjoy it but fast forward through most of the tasks as I find them boring. For me, the show has lost a bit of its shine this time round - I don't know why. I do like Claudia and her clothes! One thing still bugs me - how do the first group of people arriving for breakfast know not to knock on the door????

hourglass2 · Yesterday 11:01

No you're not alone OP, I don't get the fuss around it all, it's just not my thing and the minute a celebrity version comes out of anything I switch off

Cheap crap TV. Why bother?

Anything that’s vaguely Reality TV doesn’t get watched in this house. I’ve no time for such pointless nonsense and I only watch TV from about 8-10pm so I want a decent who dunnit with a proper storyline and good characters.

You've obviously never watched as it's certainly not cheap, not the BBC version anyway. It has very high production values and some really beautiful photography. Whether or not you enjoy it is a matter of taste though. FWIW I don't like Big Brother, Love Island or IACGMOOH particularly, but love The Traitors. You don't have to be a reality TV fan to enjoy it. I love a detective drama myself (but not all of them) - I think of Traitors as more of a whydunit like Columbo. Traitors actually has a gripping storyline and great characters, like any good drama series. I also don't watch things just because they are popular, but neither do I automatically dislike popular programmes.

It is just totally moronic like all reality TV
People need to get out more or read a book etc

inigomontoyahwillcox · Yesterday 11:05

It's boring as hell - but then again I've never been into reality TV or practical competition shows (e.g. I'm a celebrity, taskmaster etc.) even if I like the presenter/quizmaster or contestants.

Do you really think that people who watch 'reality TV' don't ever read a book, or get out of the house? Bit of a narrow-minded view! You can like reality TV and still be a reader and get out for lots of walks and have hobbies and interests! The two are not mutually exclusive!

Idontjetwashthefucker · Yesterday 11:05

Never watched it either, just don't fancy it...get a bit fed up that it seems to be the main topic of conversation at work, makes me want to watch it even less!

Also do not like Only Fools

I love how posters think they are so sophisticated and then are on MN chatting about tv programme. Maybe they need to get out more!

You are at liberty to dislike it but it is not "moronic". Ignorant comment.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · Yesterday 11:06

I have to disagree about Only Fools And Horses not being funny. One of the funniest programmes ever made. IMO. Absolute comedy gold.

People are entitled to not like it of course, but I don't think anyone can say it's not funny.

Probably the same people who say Friends is crap, and not funny. It's not crap and it's very funny!

RandomMess · Yesterday 11:07

I think it appeals if you like people watching.

You also have to remember it’s heavily edited so what we see isn’t the full experience of what has occurred each day.

Some folk are utterly clueless.

Who on Mn claims to be ‘sophisticated’? It’s a giant chat forum, not some VIP thinktank.

There's a real sneery attitude, and snobbery from some when it comes to Reality TV isn't there?

I don't like Strictly Come Dancing, and find it quite boring, and although I used to quite like Love Island, I've not liked it since Ekin-Su and Davide won, and think it's full of wannabes and people desperate to be successful influencers now. (And just desperate to be famous!) And the shrill screaming from some of the girls goes right through me. Unfortunately DH still watches it, and when it's on, I either stick my headphones in my ears and listen to music, or go for a walk. I find it unwatchable now.

But I don't slate and berate people who watch these programmes. I just CBA with them myself.

Oh come on! You can tell that the posters sneering at people who watch reality TV, and calling them morons think they're better than them!

I read on average 2 or 3 books a week and have an amazing social life... but I also really like watching Traitors with my 12 year old.
Is that acceptable to you? What is the book reading/social life/TV watching ratio I should be aiming for?

AlwaysExtraHot · Yesterday 11:13

Facecreamed · Yesterday 09:51

Yes, exactly. And when it’s celebrities, there’s something amusing about people you’d imagine being good at staying in character because they’re actors, really struggling with controlling their facial expressions, or stand-up comedians who are used to solo performances, working a crowd and dealing with hecklers etc completely losing it under pressure.

Plus there’s something basically hilarious about watching someone you last saw playing Aneurin Bevan or Tony Blair or Hamlet freaking out in a cabin among dozens of wedding dresses or singing ‘Ring! Ring! Ring!’ in a wood while holiding hands with Romesh Ranganethan.

Yes yes yes Grin
People out of context and under pressure. Like Celia Imrie and The Fart last time.
And I love seeing how people choose to dress for it.

Agree, it's not cheap, it's extremely glam and polished and the celeb version has very big names unlike most "celeb" reality TV. But it is kind of cheesy, obviously heavily edited, and made for mass appeal. It's kind of the expensive version of trashy TV. And it's OK not to like that kind of thing.

Like Hedgehog I love it despite hating Love Island, I'm a Celeb and other similar stuff. The secret traitor format gives it more interest and intrigue.

StrawberryStreet · Yesterday 11:17

It is abysmal. I've watched as not much else on plus it's so high profile so I kept waiting for the 'ah that's why it's popular' moment.

Seems to involve a load of celebs sitting round repeatedly saying 'I think he/she's a traitor' with absolutely nothing to go on.

The missions are so easy. There is very little banter between anyone and they all seem to take it and themselves so very seriously even getting upset when someone is banished.

I've heard people say they get real celebs as opposed to Strictly but fgs it's no wonder sat around eating and randomly accusing others of being a 'traitor' is not challenging.

ProcrastinatorsAnonymous · Yesterday 11:20

It takes 4-6 eps to really get going - when there are so many players at the beginning, it's just scattergun and you can really feel the decisions being taken in the edit to try to craft a coherent storyline from the chaos. I suspect this series is actually going to take longer than most to bed in and get really interesting, as the Richard thing sort of reset it.

It's also a bit uncomfortable this year because 2 of the Traitors clearly don't want to be in that role at all. The turret moments are usually really fun as the Traitors revel in what they're doing - they look like they need a hug this time.

I suspect this is not going to be as enjoyable a watch as previous series, but sticking with it and hope I'm wrong as previously loved it.

But no one can really predict who emerges as someone who gets a lot of screentime because of their behaviour — last time, one might have predicted Stephen Fry as someone who would feature heavily, but he gave a fairly lacklustre performance, wasn’t good at finding traitors and went out quite early, hav8ng only been a background presence.

Whereas someone like Joe Marler ended up emerging as a leader and getting a lot of screen time. Given that Alan Carr was already extremely well-known, I’d have said JM ‘won’ in many ways in terms of getting his name out there to non-rugby fans.

I imagine the production team this season thought that making indiscreet, manic Richard E Grant a traitor would yield lots of memorable moments, cackling in the tower, and possibly an unlikely Alan Carr-style long run at the centre of the action, but look what happened. And we have a rather dull conclave currently, with two traitors who hate being traitors. James Acaster in particular is a shadow of his former self since becoming a traitor.,

Bella uses they / them pronouns

But apparently doesn’t actually care that much, if others get it ‘wrong’.

ListenToAlfDubs · Yesterday 11:23

Shedmistress · Yesterday 09:56

Does she aye.

Every thread I've read about Traitors (love it btw) has someone jumping in to use she/her pronouns for Bella to make a point. Can't we just talk about a lighthearted show in a way that's not disrespectful to the participants who have gone in to entertain us and leave the other discussions for other bits of the forum?
