To not be able to like Traitors?

Traitor8er · Yesterday 09:17

I can't be alone surely? Tried to watch as there's some interesting people in series 2. I didn't watch 1st series. Maybe that's the issue?
I just couldn't see the appeal?
It's obviously massive.

Should I keep watching as otherwise I'm missing a fantastic series?

I usually hate reality TV but Traitors has been a great opportunity to connect with my grumpy teen. DH and other teen and reality TV snobs so leave us to it. It’s so rare these days in with our fragmented culture to have a TV show to share with family members, friends and co workers. Traitors has very high production values so it’s not cheap TV. I voted YANBU because you can like or dislike whatever. Even with the high viewing figures less people watch than don’t watch.

Bella uses they / them pronouns

Maybe they thought there was more than one of her then. She didn't come across as more inteligent than others.

@Traitor8er you can watch whatever you like, you'd don't need anyone's permission to watch or not watch.

Games of Thrones was massive but it didn't appeal to me, so I didn't watch it. We all like different things

That’s my point. They try and be all high and mighty because they don’t watch much tv and certainly not reality tv, but they are on MN. And also they could be reading trashy bonkbusters rather than classics and going to seedy nightclubs rather than highbrow theatre

But who is trying to be ‘all high and mighty’? I have four degrees and hardly ever watch TV, but am watching and enjoying Traitors, and have as hearty an appetite for enjoyable nonsense as anyone. I would like to watch way more TV, actually, but I do not want to commit to a 7-season behemoth, and I hate anything to do with crime, whether true crime or fictional TV series about criminal investigations/police etc , so that limits me a lot!

BeardySchnauzer · Yesterday 11:53

I remember Bella from the worst witch!!

I don’t really care what other people watch - have watched some reality tv in the past - this is a bit more game show at least. Just can’t understand the hype tbh

Bella Ramsey doesn't really describe themselves as anything, i don't think she is that bothered, what she is though is 23 and a bit of a naval gazer but also autistic, her use of language makes her seem intellectual maybe she is maybe she isn't, but I don't think the cast of a TV would want to be exceptionally outspoken about a 23 year old who has done nothing wrong.

She does though - she describes herself as non binary, gender fluid.

I agree with @Dancingsquirrels No celebrity would dare say anything against a young adult who describes themselves as non-binary. Career suicide. I think they all over compensated as a result.

Badvocthebad · Yesterday 12:04

Also never watched it before. My friend recommended it. I really don't understand it, tbh. I can see that the celeb version is interesting if you like the celebs, but I'm baffled by watching it with regular people. How boring!
It is, however, a fascinating example of pack mentality and manipulation.

MickyMoonshine · Yesterday 12:11

This applies to the non-celebrity version too. Actually, this element is even more fascinating because they don't know each other ( unless there is a secret relationship which can be interesting).

Inevergotthatfar · Yesterday 12:11

I don't know why there needs to be a thread about this. If you don't like it don't watch it. The end.
I didn't watch Game of Thrones . People raved about it, not my cup of tea. Whatever.

KitsyWitsy · Yesterday 12:11

I think my favourite part is seeing what Claudia is wearing. I love Claudia.

Don't care for the missions that much.

I love how it's one of those shows that people talk about. I was out for a walk yesterday with some friends and half of us are watching it. Was fun to compare opinions with friends.

I agree the last series was amazing with Alan Carr. He really made it.

StrawberryStreet · Yesterday 12:12

Muffsies · Yesterday 11:36

That's my assumption, so i've never watched it. But.. people i actually like and respect keep telling me it's great. I still can't bring myself to watch it tho, partly bc I'm in the middle of binging Slow Horses, and partly bc claudia makes me want to vom.

I just can't see how it could be that good. Like pp has said, it's like Sherlock and thinks it's better than it is, people just buy into the hype. I can't pretend i'm too good for it, i used to love the X-files after all, but i've decided i'm going to let this one pass me by.

It could be so much better. The budget etc must be massive, the sets and scenery, music all top notch but then nothing happens. A half baked mission then sat round a table saying 'I think it's her/him'.

They could've added subterfuge and intrigue but no. Miranda has revealed herself to be a bit of a sulker giving Blunty a hard time over what they are actually there to do, which is randomly guess who is a traitor. It's madness and not in a good way.

nomas · Yesterday 12:12

ProcrastinatorsAnonymous · Yesterday 11:34

I would disagree with this - particularly if someone is on the fence. It takes a good while to bed in, and the show feels very different when the numbers whittle down. There's almost too much to cover in the earlier episodes, so they can feel a bit all over the place. Clearer factions and theories emerge as the show progresses.

I always fast forward the tasks.

Well, what people are watching it for is precisely the operation of pack mentality and manipulation -- that's the same with either version. I prefer the celebrity one, not because I'm particularly interested in the individuals in it, but because the stakes are much lower when there isn't a significant sum of money being played for, and I like that. The prize pot meaning a huge amount to many of the 'civilian' contestants gives the non-celebrity version an uncomfortable edge of Hunger Games for me, though I appreciate that's what other viewers may enjoy.

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · Yesterday 12:13

I think it is rubbish.
I did try based on freind’s enthusiastic recommendation but it is not my cup of tea at all.
Too silly.

itsadlibitum · Yesterday 12:14

I wouldn’t watch it on my
own, but it’s a good family watch. Especially the celebrity version.

It's like saying I don't know why you'd contribute to this thread if you don't like it.

People discuss things and I think it's valid to wonder why this 'flagship' yet painfully dull BBC show gets so much hype.

Ljcrow · Yesterday 12:15

I absolutely love it. You're definitely not being unreasonable though. It's TV and it just doesn't matter. Life's too short to watch something you don't enjoy.

godmum56 · Yesterday 12:16

I am not sure how you'd care enough about disliking a TV program to bother asking?

Well, I'm genuinely baffled as to why a show as unpleasantly graphically violent, especially as regards using graphic sexual violence towards women as a way of expediting male-centred plotlines, as Game of Thrones was so popular and got so much hype. But tastes differ. It's not that complicated.

You are at liberty to dislike it but it is not "moronic". Ignorant comment.

Ableist as well.

Wildgoat · Yesterday 12:33

The question is unusual , no one has to like something just as others do and irs popular. For example I don’t watch soap operas, or strictly, tried once, bored the shit out of me, and find it bizzare that things like corrie or eastenders has been going on so long, or people actually tune in to watch rhe shite that is strictly, but I don’t ask people if that’s ok,Confused

MsMacheath · Yesterday 12:34

Definitely lots of sneery undertones here from posters who are trying to position themselves as oh so sophisticated and far too intelligent for rubbish like the traitors, trying to make us envisage them reclining on their chaise longe reading Sartre while listening to opera. Whereas they are probably sitting in their onesie with a family sized bag of Doritos and Dr Who on the telly.

I like the Traitors and I like lots of other reality stuff too - things like Race Across the World are brilliant. I don't like Love Island, and I've gone off Strictly. But it is not beyond my intelligence to realise that other people like Love Island, The Voice, Drag Race and nobody's forcing me to watch them.

The Traitors is one of those shows which is popular with all demographics. My PILs and mum are in their 80s and watching it, my teenagers are watching it. It's rare that there is a single show which is a hit across such a wide age range.

Your post is exactly the reason why OP asked if it's OK not to like Traitors.

I don't like Traitors I don't see the point of it - or any reality TV for that matter. I don't like Strictly. I love ballet and contemporary modern dance. I think Strictly is tedious. I'm not interested in any of the shows you've listed.

But according to people like you I can't just dislike /have no interest in them I must be trying to make a point.

ohyesiseethatnow · Yesterday 12:35

CasperGutman · Yesterday 09:25

YANBU not to like it. You like what you like, I suppose.

I love it myself though. At heart it's a very simple parlour game, like a slightly more complicated version of wink murder. It's just that the contestants live within the game for an extended period, so they get really invested in it and have the time and space to massively overthink everything, with fascinating and/or hilarious results.

See, I would agree with this if more of it was “in plain sight” murders.

But as it says, you’ve got people sleuthing, but there is nothing to go on - the traitors don’t do anything other than meet up in complete secret and send a letter to kill people. Therefore I don’t really get all the sleuthing. As pp said, they act like it’s cleverer than it is.

I liked the in plain sight ones - Allan Carr having to quote the shakepeare line to kill someone, or touch someone’s face.

in saying that I do quite enjoy it but don’t quite feel it lives up to the hype. The tasks are good though. Haven’t seen any of this series yet but looking forward to it

Have you tried watching it?

I don’t care if people watch it and don’t like it.

People who refuse to watch it and say it’s cheap or shit, or it’s beneath them because it’s “reality TV” are really annoying.

Blatant snobbery isn't it? And it's always people who claim to be middle class.

Does she aye.

I'm not sure that classic droll Mumsnet comeback means what you think it means.
