To not be able to like Traitors?

Traitor8er · Yesterday 09:17

I can't be alone surely? Tried to watch as there's some interesting people in series 2. I didn't watch 1st series. Maybe that's the issue?
I just couldn't see the appeal?
It's obviously massive.

Should I keep watching as otherwise I'm missing a fantastic series?

Cheap crap TV. Why bother?

Anything that’s vaguely Reality TV doesn’t get watched in this house. I’ve no time for such pointless nonsense and I only watch TV from about 8-10pm so I want a decent who dunnit with a proper storyline and good characters.

Have you tried watching it?

I don’t care if people watch it and don’t like it.

People who refuse to watch it and say it’s cheap or shit, or it’s beneath them because it’s “reality TV” are really annoying.

James Acaster is slowly crumbling bless him 😀

He is, isn’t he? I mean. Maybe I’m misremembering how he was before he was recruited, but from what I remember he was fairly confident, relaxed and comparatively outspoken (much the way I remember him being on panel shows). Now he looks pale, anguished and like a rabbit in headlights! Like he’s contemplating escaping from the set and trying to hike to Inverness to his flight home…

If you don't like the first two episodes, you won't like the rest. Move on!

Theresmagicwheretheflowersgrow · Yesterday 11:34

I love some of the celebs in it this time so I'm enjoying it but I can't help suspecting it's scripted, they've signed contracts for large amounts of money and have negotiated how long they're going to stay in, they're acting all the time etc. This is the first series I've watched though so maybe the celeb one is always over the top, especially their reactions?

I would disagree with this - particularly if someone is on the fence. It takes a good while to bed in, and the show feels very different when the numbers whittle down. There's almost too much to cover in the earlier episodes, so they can feel a bit all over the place. Clearer factions and theories emerge as the show progresses.

Thats why TVs have an off switch.

It is just totally moronic like all reality TV
People need to get out more or read a book etc

That's my assumption, so i've never watched it. But.. people i actually like and respect keep telling me it's great. I still can't bring myself to watch it tho, partly bc I'm in the middle of binging Slow Horses, and partly bc claudia makes me want to vom.

I just can't see how it could be that good. Like pp has said, it's like Sherlock and thinks it's better than it is, people just buy into the hype. I can't pretend i'm too good for it, i used to love the X-files after all, but i've decided i'm going to let this one pass me by.

I think they are up late tbf so he was probably tired it doesn't get dark till 10 /11 that far North in May/June.so it is probably a long day,
he was quite jovial to begin with but he now walks like a broken sad man 😀

If you don't like it don't watch it. Loads of people like strictly, soap operas, etc. I don't so I don't watch them.

Who on Mn claims to be ‘sophisticated’? It’s a giant chat forum, not some VIP thinktank.

That’s my point. They try and be all high and mighty because they don’t watch much tv and certainly not reality tv, but they are on MN. And also they could be reading trashy bonkbusters rather than classics and going to seedy nightclubs rather than highbrow theatre

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · Yesterday 11:39

I guess it also comes down to the characters playing it so maybe a different set of players would make me enjoy it more

i know no one is allowed to say this but I’m also not a fan of Claudia’s!

I’ve never watched it, largely because I can’t stand CW.

AgualusasL0ver · Yesterday 11:39

I don't really get the hype. I am just not that into people I don't know/reality TV.* So I did watch the first Celebrity series as there were lots of people I liked in it. I really enjoyed it and it was fun and didn't require lots of committment like a box set (where DH wants to whizz through) and I enjoyed hearing and joining in chats with work about what happened last night etc.

I am not watching this series as not enough people that I am personally interested in. Obviously, it is fine to like or not like whatever you want though.

*I love Pointless, but only ever watch Celebrity Pointless when I do.

Dancingsquirrels · Yesterday 11:39

I liked Bella but I was never sure why they treated her like some kind of genius. She made some good points but was no better than any other player.

No celebrity would dare say anything against a young adult who describes themselves as non-binary. Career suicide

XenaSharples · Yesterday 11:41

I think it's crap. To each their own.

Somethingsquishy · Yesterday 11:41

I normally love it and encourage people to watch it, but I think the casting on this series is terrible.

There's no major names like there was in the previous celeb series and the one (Jerry Hall) "big name" is frankly flat as pancake. There's a weird lack of charisma and personality in this cast and it's quite boring.

CasperGutman · Yesterday 11:42

Tcateh · Yesterday 10:46

The American one, same castle is infinitely more entertaining.
Alan Cumming is an amazing host compared to Claudia

Oh, now you've gone too far. I'm fully supportive of anyone not liking The Traitors, although I love it myself. But I'm genuinely flabbergasted that anyone could prefer the US version, with its attention-seeking pseudo-celebrities and awful repetitive editing, over the UK show in either the celebrity or standard versions.

Alan Cumming is fun to watch as the host, though.

She also says she’s not bothered if people don’t use them/get mixed up. She’s not offended. Don’t try to start an argument on her behalf.

This is a sentence from a Guardian interview with Bella Ramsey

"When Ramsey got the first callback from Mazin and Druckmann, they joined the Zoom from their childhood bedroom."

WHO? Who was in their childhood bedroom? Mazin and Druckmann? Bella? Were Mazin and Druckmann in Bella's childhood bedroom? It makes everything so much more linguistically complicated than it needs to be.

Compare with "When Ramsey got the first callback from Mazin and Druckmann, she joined the Zoom from her childhood bedroom."

I know that's not the point of this thread, but it's an excellent example of why so-called gender-neutral pronouns obfuscate meaning.

There's a real sneery attitude, and snobbery from some when it comes to Reality TV isn't there?

I don't like Strictly Come Dancing, and find it quite boring, and although I used to quite like Love Island, I've not liked it since Ekin-Su and Davide won, and think it's full of wannabes and people desperate to be successful influencers now. (And just desperate to be famous!) And the shrill screaming from some of the girls goes right through me. Unfortunately DH still watches it, and when it's on, I either stick my headphones in my ears and listen to music, or go for a walk. I find it unwatchable now.

But I don't slate and berate people who watch these programmes. I just CBA with them myself.

Yes - there is a hierarchy of quality within all genres.

Crappy drama and amazingly written and produced high-end stuff.

Lazy light ent formats and intelligent, witty quiz shows.

Moronic and exploitative Reality TV and Reality TV formats that manage to find a genuinely original way to surprise and entertain.

The best of reality tv is complex and silly and playful all at once. And in the case of The Traitors, it's incredibly well produced.

Every thread I've read about Traitors (love it btw) has someone jumping in to use she/her pronouns for Bella to make a point. Can't we just talk about a lighthearted show in a way that's not disrespectful to the participants who have gone in to entertain us and leave the other discussions for other bits of the forum?

Meh, she's specifically said she doesn't mind what pronouns people use for her. I think it's the other way around - everyone involved is using they/them despite the fact that she's said they don't need to, to show off their inclusivity (or because they know if they don't they'll be hauled over the coals despite what Bella has actually said).

Even if she had demanded to be called they/them, it's actually unreasonable to require people to only describe you according to your own self-perception (there's no other context in which society stands for that) and no one has to do it. She's obviously female. No one is non-binary in terms of sex, and everyone is non-binary in terms of gender expression. It's objectively meaningless. She can see herself how she likes, but luckily in the UK other people aren't forced to agree (at least not by law).

You said the last Celebrity version tbf

Thank you! Would also like to point out that Maya Jama is not white and she selected the first murder victim of the series. Richard E Grant said she should choose.

The first to be banished this year by a group vote was Richard himself.

AttitudeAdjuster · Yesterday 11:45

Traitors and Gladiators seem to be the only things I can convince my teens to watch with us. We all look forward to it coming on, yell at the telly and guess what's coming next. I'd forgotten how fun it is to all sit and watch something as a family. It's not exactly about whether I like it or not-I don't think I'd watch it on my own but it's really entertaining to watch together and guess who will do what. It's a unique formula. I hope they are making more shows like it.

Bella Ramsey doesn't really describe themselves as anything, i don't think she is that bothered, what she is though is 23 and a bit of a naval gazer but also autistic, her use of language makes her seem intellectual maybe she is maybe she isn't, but I don't think the cast of a TV would want to be exceptionally outspoken about a 23 year old who has done nothing wrong.

CynicalSunni · Yesterday 11:47

SubmarineDream · Yesterday 10:41

Bella seems quite relaxed about pronouns actually Bella Ramsey explains why sharing their pronouns publicly was 'stressful' - Capital

Bella said: "I've never been strict about 'they/them', because I think I just don't really care. Also, I'm very comfortable in who I am. I know how important it is for other people, but for me it's not as important right now."

Clarifying their pronouns ,,Bella said: "Whatever you fancy, really!"
"A lot of people call me 'they', some people call me 'she', occasionally I get a 'he'. And sort of whatever, I'm pretty chill about it all – for now. Maybe that'll change, but for now."

I mean thats probably the best way to look at it.
I find it kinda silly celebs announce their pronouns only fans are gonna know. Then their fans correct people on message boards and in real life. Who is gonna remember a random celebs pronouns? I barely remmber names 🤣

Loving ross kemps paranoia though

Edited

I am in the market for a version of Pointless where no one asks the contestants, celebrity or not, anything about themselves, and just go straight to the questions.

KassandraOfSparta · Yesterday 11:48

Definitely lots of sneery undertones here from posters who are trying to position themselves as oh so sophisticated and far too intelligent for rubbish like the traitors, trying to make us envisage them reclining on their chaise longe reading Sartre while listening to opera. Whereas they are probably sitting in their onesie with a family sized bag of Doritos and Dr Who on the telly.

I like the Traitors and I like lots of other reality stuff too - things like Race Across the World are brilliant. I don't like Love Island, and I've gone off Strictly. But it is not beyond my intelligence to realise that other people like Love Island, The Voice, Drag Race and nobody's forcing me to watch them.

The Traitors is one of those shows which is popular with all demographics. My PILs and mum are in their 80s and watching it, my teenagers are watching it. It's rare that there is a single show which is a hit across such a wide age range.
