Colin is not a birthday cake

BeMintFatball · Yesterday 11:52

Tomorrow our younger daughter is 24. I would love to have the energy to make her a cake but I’m running on fumes and have been for months.

I gave my husband one job. Go buy her a birthday cake. He sent me a photograph Colin. I said no, there is only one time a year she can have a cake with happy birthday written on it. Would you believe such a thing does not exist at our nearest M&S!

Her older sister has come to the rescue, she’s gone to Sainsbury’s.

YABU Colin is the gold standard shop bought cake

YANBU Colin is an any time of year cake

While i'm not sure i'd choose it for an adult, it is a birthday cake and i'd rather have it than anything they sell at sainsburys(i love sainsburys for basic shopping but not cakes).

HoraceCope · Today 06:40

ooh sainsbury's do a particularly lovely cake with honey which i plan to buy for my birthday

HoraceCope · Today 06:41

I'm surprised. I was in our m&s yesterday and there was a nice selection of fancy birthday cakes. Colin, while tasty, would be a bit disappointing for a 24 Yr old.

My partner is 47 this month. His mum buys him a colin every year 😂. We all love it. She’s a big M&S food ie and we even have the christmas colin at some point too.

And I asked you a polite question about your interpretation. Why are you so defensive?

I hope you have some positive days ahead. You need it.

I find it very weird that adults celebrate birthdays like children, as if they're a big thing. An adult expecting a big fuss on their birthday, bizarre. Like American adults drinking out of straws.

Edited

You would hate me i love celebrating everyone’s birthdays and i often drink out of a straw😂. Life is short celebrate the fun.

Not everyone gets to live to an old age and i’ve worked with many that don’t reach even adulthood so to me all birthdays are worth a celebration child or adult that we’ve reached another year.

what?? I’m 48 and Colin is my choice of cake for my own birthday every year

Stopsnowing · Today 07:53

I went to a childrens party where the cake was made of a stack of mini colins so they all had one!

hellospring26 · Today 07:54

@Italiangoddess200the draws are for veneers and whitened teeth, not just birthdays!

thedogsdinnerandall · Today 07:56

YANBU - Colin is cheap, tacky and nasty looking.

metellaestinatrio · Today 08:00

My DS who hates icing always has a Colin (or two or three, depending on numbers) at his birthday parties! Colin is absolutely a birthday cake.

TheKindnessProject · Today 08:11

Personally I think Colin is rank and I'd go reasonably hungry before I'd eat it, but definitely wouldn't starve before eating it (for clarification). Having said that, it seems a very cheery option for birthdays for people who like a Colin in general.

Are M&S offering a Halloween Colin this year, does anyone know? 🎃

Any occasion?

Any occasion?

Like what? How often are people buying decorated cakes for occasions other than birthdays? He's a birthday cake.

It can be either but Colin is overrated. Only his face is worth eating.

Agreed. The cake is so sweet it makes my teeth hurt.

BrokeGnome · Today 10:30

Snobbery is alive and well! Colin is an excellent birthday cake, and it would help if youse on higher incomes allow us on lower incomes to have something that's considered nice without dissing it.

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · Today 10:37

OP! Wash your mouth out! Colin is THE birthday cake! What planet have you been living on?

lateSeptember1964 · Today 10:54

Colin is not just a a birthday cake it’s a link to childhood memories in our house.

britneyisfreebutnotokay · Today 10:55

I wouldn’t want it for my birthday either. Ew. But we do buy it whenever it’s yellow stickered

You were contradictory and confusing, and continue to be so.

You said you wanted a specific kind of birthday cake, as described.

And you also said you wanted "any kind of birthday cake."

A sponge cake with white icing is not exclusively a birthday cake. It can be a birthday cake. Or it could be a wedding cake. Or a cake you serve when your maiden aunt is coming for tea.

And a birthday cake can be a small coffee and walnut cake. Or an ice cream cake shaped like a caterpillar. Or a chocolate gateaux. Read the thread. All of these and many more can be birthday cakes.

I think you need to free your mind a little. Here's a wild thought to ponder: you can have a sponge cake with white icing whenever you want.

You are being contrary and continue to be so.

I went into even more exact detail with my family than I did on here, I even showed my adult dd what I meant. I wanted a BIRTHDAY cake. Not just any cake, but a sponge birthday cake with white fondant icing and Happy Birthday written on it. The sort of cake that nobody on Earth could mistake for anything other than a birthday cake, and would never buy for any other occasion. My dd knew exactly what I meant, but unfortunately, she was not the one who bought it.

BeMintFatball · Today 12:12

@sherbetlemonade my sympathies. Your idea of a birthday cake is exactly what I want for DD . Victoria sponge, white icing says Happy Birthday. Fortunately older DD bought exactly that from Sainsbury’s.

The daughter whose birthday it is has had a very tough year. Getting to 24 is an achievement and that is why an unmistakable birthday cake is important to me.
