Colin is not a birthday cake

Tomorrow our younger daughter is 24. I would love to have the energy to make her a cake but I’m running on fumes and have been for months.

I gave my husband one job. Go buy her a birthday cake. He sent me a photograph Colin. I said no, there is only one time a year she can have a cake with happy birthday written on it. Would you believe such a thing does not exist at our nearest M&S!

Her older sister has come to the rescue, she’s gone to Sainsbury’s.

YABU Colin is the gold standard shop bought cake

YANBU Colin is an any time of year cake

Colin is an expected guest at our kids birthdays. It’s practically a tradition!

(Kids are now young adults!)

Colin is definitely the best choice for a shop bought birthday cake. Everything else tastes synthetic.
It's definitely a celebration cake though! Not necessarily just birthdays l guess...

If someone brought that out on a random Thursday morning over a coffee and offered me a slice, whilst I wouldn't say no, id think it a little odd but equally kudos to them for ignoring ridiculous social norms around when to have what cake hahaha

Love a Colin

only ever bought as a birthday cake in this house and always goes down well!

RikthePoet · Yesterday 12:06

Your poll question makes no sense.

A birthday cake doesn't have to have Happy Birthday written on it to be a birthday cake.

How is a Colin with birthday candles on it, eaten on someone's birthday as you all gather round and sing Happy Birthday not a birthday cake?

You are being unreasonable.

Colin is 100% a birthday cake and substantially more delicious than 99% of supermarket birthday cakes. I do tend to make birthday cakes, but we didn't have a kitchen during birthday season this year so it was Colin to the rescue.

Colin is so overrated. Don’t know why so many people love it. It’s dry horrible sponge. So many better cakes in Marks.

Happyjoe · Yesterday 12:08

Both are horrible! Colin has awful chocolate but it looks so cute. Sainsburys, well, don't get the pink raspberry one. One bite each and it went in the bin! Was about £18 too.

But yeah, Colin for a 24 year old? Not sure. If she likes them, then fine!

Colin is the ultimate birthday cake. A birthday isn’t a birthday without Colin even for my 20 somethings

Lovemelovemycat · Yesterday 12:09

Colin very much is a cake! I’ve bought one for ds2 for every birthday and he was 29 this year. I put the birthday numbers behind his head to look like ears. (Colin, not ds2 who is normally in the pub but dh and I love a Colin) 🐛

Might be a bit childish at 24 I suppose, but Colin is definitely a birthday cake. I think you’d have to be a particularly fun and carefree person to buy a Colin on a random Wednesday for no reason. But any cake is a birthday cake when you put candles on it!

My DS has insisted on having a Colin for his birthday cake for the past six years. Until the pandemic, I had a beautiful themed cake made for him every year by very talented friends who made everything from a tractor to a bendy-bus to a Hexbug to a skate-park depending on his interests at the time and the theme of his party. He turned 13 at the start of the first lockdown when my local baking friend was shielding and said he wanted a Colin, and that was that - Colin every year thereafter!

DD will be 15 next week. She has requested an M&S Colin ice cream cake. If we discover that the ice cream cake was a summer special, and ordinary one will do.

An ice cream version of Colin exists?! Oh wow, I did not know this! I'll get this for DD when it's her birthday next year (August). Thank you for the heads up!

BeautifulLittlePumpkin · Yesterday 12:10

Oh dear, you’re soulless.

Fuck me, your definition of "carefree" is a bit depressing!

Colin is fine as a birthday cake but he’s full of shit if he says there are no cakes saying happy birthday in M and S

Those caterpillars are drier than the Sahara! No idea why anyone eats them, ever.

Pradababe · Yesterday 12:13

We are having one on Christmas Day - Jesus would want that ..IMO

purpleme12 · Yesterday 12:13

Colin (and other Caterpillar cakes) are the best cakes for birthdays. Absolutely. But also the best cakes full stop. If we're buying a cake then that's the cake that we buy

UnintentionalArcher · Yesterday 12:14

My husband gets me a Colin every birthday. Colin is a king among birthday cakes!

Topjoe19 · Yesterday 12:14

My kids made up a song about Colin that's how much we love him. No substitutes.

Echobelly · Yesterday 12:14

My son's 15 and always wants a caterpillar cake!

I'd say it's a birthday cake if you want it/don't care what the cake is, it's only a problem if the birthday person wouldn't like it.

dontcallmelen · Yesterday 12:14

Dd who is 41 next week has requested a Colin as per most years once you add candles it’s a birthday cake, she is happy I’m happy job done.

LondonLass2026 · Yesterday 12:16

My son is 30 and when he's with me for his birthday he ALWAYS GETS a Colin, and he loves it!

We also buy Colin's female counterpart Connie, and other stuff in the Colin range for birthdays, e.g. mini chocolate rolls.

I'm 51 and adore Colin, and would always welcome him for my birthday!

Came on to say the same thing.

But if shop bought cake is your thing, I think Colin is supposed to be a birthday cake, isnt it? Weirdly, I've just remembered when my dd was 24 we were out having a theatre trip to London and I bought us all mini Colins to have as a treat after our picnic lunch.
