Colin is not a birthday cake

Tomorrow our younger daughter is 24. I would love to have the energy to make her a cake but I’m running on fumes and have been for months.

I gave my husband one job. Go buy her a birthday cake. He sent me a photograph Colin. I said no, there is only one time a year she can have a cake with happy birthday written on it. Would you believe such a thing does not exist at our nearest M&S!

Her older sister has come to the rescue, she’s gone to Sainsbury’s.

YABU Colin is the gold standard shop bought cake

YANBU Colin is an any time of year cake

A Colin the Caterpillar cake? What's wrong with that as a birthday cake? I'd love it myself and I am 60.

I am born late November and my mum knows how much I love a chocolate log. They are usually on the shelves around then. Last year she put a chocolate log in the centre of a plate, then little mini Colins around it to look like legs, then covered the plate in fruit. DP's eyes were popping out at her genius!!!

The vintage party cake is good by M&S. I've bought that this year for my daughter as I wouldn't have time to make one.

I went to a wedding where Colin was the wedding cake...🤣

I must be in the minority and led a sheltered life. I’m nearly 55 and have never bought a standard sized Colin. I’ll make amends for my next birthday I think.

Tunnocksmallow · Yesterday 15:34

We’ll have no Colin slander here…

User573359 · Yesterday 15:37

Wait, people are having Colin cakes at any time of year? Madness. Colin is the favoured birthday cake in our family. Also, Sainsbury's is the worst for birthday cakes of all the supermarkets, I think you are going to regret declining Colin.

anunlikelyunicorn · Yesterday 15:44

The answer is obvious surely? She gets two cakes, Collin and a celebration sponge cake then she plays rock paper scissors with her sister to decide which cake gets to be eaten first, of course if it’s a draw they get eaten together!

Dd4 had Colin last week !

What is the age cut off for a Colin? I’m late 40s and would love a Colin (Firth or cake) for my birthday!

It apparently started in 1990 when I was 12 and I think I would have found it too childish then.

Optimisticccc · Yesterday 16:04

To me, Colin is the classic office birthday cake.

SapphireSeptember · Yesterday 16:11

Nope. I tried a Colin the caterpillar cake once and it was awful. (Although I buy the lemon cake from M&S for my birthday because it's my favourite.)

"Colin is an any time of year cake" is possibly the most unreasonable thing I've ever read on mumsnet. Are you tucking into a Colin on a random Tuesday?? I must know!

I have done. Well, one of his competitors at another well known store! I get staff discount so have, on ocassion, bought one when it’s been reduced. So 2 discounts. I’ll have a slice or 2 then leave the rest for staff to share!

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · Yesterday 16:19

I always have a Colin for my birthday! 45 next week!

I went to a wedding where Colin was the wedding cake...🤣

I had to do a presentation on my birthday and took mini Collins for the class. The lecturer was very impressed as she’d not seen them, and was having a Colin wedding cake.

The birthday person gets to eat his face.

TheRealSmurfette · Yesterday 16:29

We love Colin here 🐛🐛🐛🐛

TheeNotoriousPIG · Yesterday 16:40

Colin is the only birthday cake in our family. Even my DN, who is two, could tell you that!

PS5Gamer · Yesterday 16:41

Colin is a cake for all occasions, the recipient gets to eat his face or arse if preferred!

ThatLilacTiger · Yesterday 16:47

Colin is god tier birthday cake. Birthday girl gets the face and/or butt.

farmlass · Yesterday 16:51

I’ve just had a 60th birthday and a few wee gatherings !
Colin has twice been the cake of choice and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed two of his faces !!!

I think Colin and the new cake will do just fine. But OP, I feel your pain, he had one job. Weaponised Incompetence of the highest order. I would say when it’s his birthday get him a Thomas one but he’d probably like that and it would perpetuate the infantile behaviour.

I don't think this is weaponised incompetence since probably half of the people on this thread would agree with him that Colin in fine as a birthday cake...he hasn't done the task wrong, just different to what op would have chosen

HelpMyBlackLabradorVotesReform · Yesterday 16:57

What sort of weirdo buys a Colin when it isn't a Birthday?

Boreded · Yesterday 17:00

Colin isn’t a birthday cake…he is THE birthday cake

ExplodingSmittens · Yesterday 17:00

Surely you have Colin and the birthday girl gets to decide if they want to eat his face?
