Colin is not a birthday cake

Tomorrow our younger daughter is 24. I would love to have the energy to make her a cake but I’m running on fumes and have been for months.

I gave my husband one job. Go buy her a birthday cake. He sent me a photograph Colin. I said no, there is only one time a year she can have a cake with happy birthday written on it. Would you believe such a thing does not exist at our nearest M&S!

Her older sister has come to the rescue, she’s gone to Sainsbury’s.

A Colin the Caterpillar cake? What's wrong with that as a birthday cake? I'd love it myself and I am 60.

BigBurrata · Yesterday 11:54

Colin puts in an appearance at every birthday in our house!

NormasArse · Yesterday 11:54

Colin is most definitely a birthday cake!

Billybagpuss · Yesterday 11:55

Blooming eck I’d rather have a Colin than a generic sainsbugs birthday cake any day of the week.

we only have Colin’s on our birthday

Whaleandsnail6 · Yesterday 11:55

We use Colin ( and other Caterpillar's) for birthdays of any age...stick a happy birthday/number candle in it and its fine. Best tasting cake in my opinion!

BusterGonad · Yesterday 11:55

If not a birthday cake then what is it?

rubyslippers · Yesterday 11:55

Colin is 10000% a birthday cake
I’ve never eaten it on any other occasion

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · Yesterday 11:55

I'm surprised. I was in our m&s yesterday and there was a nice selection of fancy birthday cakes. Colin, while tasty, would be a bit disappointing for a 24 Yr old.

Colin is THE birthday cake
when else do you get him?!

DanaScullysLegoHair · Yesterday 11:55

It can be either but Colin is overrated. Only his face is worth eating.

fumingrightnow1 · Yesterday 11:56

Of course its a birthday cake and a great one at that

FlipthelidSid · Yesterday 11:56

Colin is the birthday cake of choice in our house when I haven’t had time to make one!

APlagueOnBothYourHouses · Yesterday 11:57

So you asked him to get a cake and he felt he couldn’t choose one without your final approval and then it wasn’t good enough so someone else has had to go to a different supermarket?

To be honest, it’s never crossed my mind that a birthday cake needs happy birthday written on it. To me, it’s the candles that makes a birthday cake a birthday cake.

CelticSilver · Yesterday 11:57

M&S sells cakes and 'Happy Birthday' cake toppers/candles.

But Colin is the gold standard for birthdays.

tinyspiny · Yesterday 11:57

Any cake can be a birthday cake if you stick candles on it .

RumPidgeon · Yesterday 11:57

I love a Colin cake!!! ☺️
YABVU you cake snob (lighthearted) 😂😂

HBD to your DD 🎉

Gravygranules · Yesterday 11:58

MrsShawnHatosy · Yesterday 11:58

I organised at party for DH when he turned 60 but I didn't have a chance to make a cake. Colin it was. Popular choice and luckily DH is called Colin.

Aside from anything else, they're bloody delicious 😋

napody · Yesterday 11:59

"Colin is an any time of year cake" is possibly the most unreasonable thing I've ever read on mumsnet. Are you tucking into a Colin on a random Tuesday?? I must know!

TheChosenTwo · Yesterday 11:59

I’ve only ever seen a Colin eaten as a birthday cake, never as a ‘just because’ cake.
We make all birthday cakes here but a Colin is definitely a standard birthday cake.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · Yesterday 11:59

DD will be 15 next week. She has requested an M&S Colin ice cream cake. If we discover that the ice cream cake was a summer special, and ordinary one will do.

TheTwenties · Yesterday 12:01

Young adult DD recent birthday - I’ve always made a cake but this year just couldn’t and a Colin or equivalent was requested instead.
